The Tenka'ichi Dai Budō Taikai, also called the Tenka'ichi Dai Budōkai, is a large-scale martial arts tournament sponsored by Gyōsan Money after the defeat of Cell in the Cell Games. The tournament included 200 participants divided into eight groups of twenty-five. The competitors fought over four rounds, although only the first two rounds were completed before the tournament was interrupted by Bojack and his henchmen.

In the first round, eight groups of twenty contestants fought "battle royale"-style to determine the semi-finalists. By apparent coincidence, each of the main cast members fought in a separate battle group and, except for Yamcha, each won their respective match: Son Gohan, Kuririn, Piccolo, Future Trunks, and Tenshinhan. Dosukoi successfully (and accidentally) defeated Yamcha by knocking over the pillar that he had been resting on. Udō and Kung-fun also won their respective rounds. In the semi-final, Gohan defeated Udō, Future Trunks defeated Tenshinhan, and Dosukoi defeated Kung-fun. Kuririn faced off against Piccolo and defeated him by default when Piccolo quit the tournament. The final four were to face off in a time-based challenge against an "alien warrior" (actually a student from Mister Satan's school); the fastest victor would advance to an exhibition match against Mister Satan himself. Due to Bojack's interruption, no victor was named and no contestant faced off against Mister Satan at the end.

The end of Dragon Ball Z Movie 9 depicts a poster advertising a 2nd Tenka'ichi Dai Budō Taikai, however no sequel was depicted in the anime or films.

Rules

The rules resembled those of a standard Tenka'ichi Budōkai including no killing, no weapons, and disqualification for leaving the ring. The preliminary rounds appear to have been timed as Kuririn's battle zone tipped over when too many competitors remained at the end of the round; he only won by grabbing onto the edge as his fellow combatants fell around him. Additionally, the final match was won not only by beating your opponent but by doing it more quickly than your fellow finalists.

Tournament Grounds

Battle Island

Battle Island consists of several color-coded fighting areas (purple, green, yellow, red, and orange) as well as additional areas between the towers and scattered across the island. In total, eight separate areas were used for the initial battles. These zones were spaced around a central core from which spectators watched the events either directly or on large viewing screens spread across the venue. Although the semi-final battles started on the color-coded stages, participants were free to move around the island at will, provided they did not fall into the water or out of bounds.

Although "Battle Island" resembles an island, a large part of the facility was a mobile floating platform. This platform was moved to Battle Island II, an actual volcanic island, for the final rounds of the tournament.

Battle Island II

Dialog in the film implies that there were five "Battle Zones" on Battle Island II, one for each of the penultimate battles (called "north", "south", "east", and "west" although it is not clear which is which in the film) and one for the final showdown with Mister Satan. However, a total of six battle environments are shown. This discrepancy is not explained. Each of the zones also includes a tower in the background, however the function of this tower is also not elaborated on in the film.

Matches

Preliminaries

The preliminary battles were fought in eight simultaneous "battle royale" events scattered around the island on overlapping platforms. Many of the battles took place on color-coded fighting stages, but also included obstacles such as ledges, pillars, and moving platforms. As the battles neared their conclusion, the floors could tip as a way to force weaker players off and ensure a victory in time. Although not numbered in the film, the stage numbers given here represent their placement in the winners list.

Preliminary Stage 1

The first preliminary battle was fought on a flat red battleground with a rocky edge that overlooked the water. A key strategy in this stage was pushing opponents off. Dosukoi unsuccessfully tried to chase several combatants off before they were able to turn the table and swarm him, nearly pushing him off instead. He used his strength and their momentum to turn the tables and toss many combatants into the water below. Later, he accidentally knocked over a white pillar in his battle stage; Yamcha, relaxing on top while the battle raged around him, was caught off-guard and fell into the water. Dosukoi advanced to the semi-finals. Dosukoi was the sixth competitor to advance to the semi-finals.

Preliminary Stage 2

The second preliminary battle was not depicted in the film. Kung-Fun was revealed to be the winner and the final contestant to advance to the semi-finals.

Preliminary Stage 3

The third preliminary battle took place on an elevated platform above where Kuririn was fighting. The battle was depicted only indirectly as combatant after combatant was knocked off by Piccolo. He was the fourth warrior to complete the preliminary round. This stage included a yellow area with a guard rail at the edge of a tower.

Preliminary Stage 4

The fourth battle stage was fought in an area with ascending and descending platforms. Kuririn fought with joy and easily defeated every opponent. It was only when he realized that Piccolo, Son Gohan, and Future Trunks were fighting nearby that his mood soured and he realized that he was outmatched. Kuririn continued fighting but had not cleared his stage before the platform he was on began to tilt. As everyone scrambled for a handhold, Kuririn found purchase on the edge of the ring. Once everyone else had fallen off, Kuririn became the winner by default. He was the third combatant to make it to the semi-finals.

Preliminary Stage 5

Tenshinhan's battle, the sixth, was depicted only on a monitor near where Oolong and others were eating. He performed a spinning head-butt on an unknown fighter. Tenshinhan was the fifth contestant to win his round and advance to the semi-finals.

Preliminary Stage 6

The sixth battle took place on a raised platform with a red floor, just above the area where Kuririn fought in the fourth stage. This battle was mostly depicted indirectly as Trunks knocked many of his adversaries out of bounds, landing near Kuririn on his battle stage. Trunks eliminated his opponents quickly and was the second challenger to move on to the semi-finals. Trunks defeated two figures that resembled established Dragon Ball characters, Colonel Yellow and Man-Wolf, but appear to be design reuse. (A different figure, also resembling Man-Wolf, was also present in a different battle stage.)

Unknown Stage

On an unknown battle stage, a character resembling Man-Wolf successfully fends off attacks from a variety of fighting styles: kempō, boxing, kung-fu, and even lucha libre. Despite countering attack after attack, the wolf steps off the edge of the fighting platform by mistake and falls into the water. This stage is fought on a flat white platform resembling Son Gohan's stage, but it could take place elsewhere.

Semi-Finals

After the battle royale-style preliminary rounds, the competition resumes as four one-on-one battles in the style of a Tenka'ichi Budōkai in order to determine the finalists.

Son Gohan vs. Udō Winner:  Son Gohan (by ring-out) Despite Udō's towering presence and confident attitude, Son Gohan knocks him out of the ring immediately with a foot sweep.

Future Trunks vs. Tenshinhan Winner:  Future Trunks (by ring-out) Tenshinhan and Trunks careen around the island in a flurry of movements, leaping from platforms to the air, much to the astonishment of the audience. Tenshinhan nearly lands a kiko-ho, but Trunks dodges it at the last moment. The battle is fierce and the competitors appear evenly matched. For a brief time, both competitors fight mere inches above the water (and disqualification). After becoming a Super Saiyan, Trunks quickly turns the tide of the battle in his favor. He tanks through Tenshinhan's ki blasts and knocks him into the water with a single blow.

Kuririn vs. Piccolo Winner:  Kuririn (by forfeit) Kuririn begins the battle as a nervous wreck, first worrying that Piccolo will take the battle too seriously and injure him, before becoming enraged that Piccolo seems to be completely dismissing his abilities entirely. Kuririn launches at Piccolo, but in his agitation misses and launches himself off the edge and nearly into the water. He catches himself by flying returns to the ring, but his humiliation and lack of composure makes flying difficult. Piccolo grabs him and tosses him back in the ring, complaining that none of the competitors are worth his time. Piccolo flies off and forfeits the match. Kuririn wins.

Dosukoi vs. Kung-fun Winner:  Dosukoi The last semi-final match between Dosukoi and Kung-fun was not presented in the film. The announcer states that it was a hard-fought battle and narrowly won by Dosukoi. The program book that accompanied the film states that Dosukoi won thanks to his powerful utchari technique, a last-ditch sumo technique to toss an opponent over your back. He advanced to the finals.

Finals

The finals would have been fought as an unusual time-challenge: Each of the four finalists were randomly assigned one of the four "intergalactic warriors" that had come to the competition to battle. (Actually, they were students of Mister Satan dressed as aliens.) Instead of battling each other, the warrior that located and defeated their selected foe the fastest, then returned via an elevator to the surface, would win the round. No explanation was given if none of the four finalists were able to defeat their galactic challenger. Although not clearly stated, it is implied that the winner of this final would receive the competition prizes, the hot springs trip, and the money; the final battle against Mister Satan would have been an "un-winnable" exhibition match.

Prior to the match, the four students were replaced by four actual "Intergalactic Warriors", members of Bojack's gang. They kept up the fiction of being part of the competition for a time, but the producers discovered the swap when Dosukoi was killed. As the tournament-goers fled, and Mister Satan panicked, Son Gohan and his friends were left to clean up the mess.

Kuririn vs. Zangya Winner:  Zangya (by knock-out) Kuririn's pod crash lands in a pool of lava, but he escapes unscathed to discover Zangya hidden behind a plume of steam. He loses focus after discovering she is a woman; she presses her advantage with a rapid series of blows that leave Kuririn stupefied. Kuririn raises his head to ask who she is before collapsing into unconsciousness.

Dosukoi vs. Bido Winner:  Bido Dosukoi's battle zone is a hot desert. Suddenly, an arm shoots out of the sand and the wrestler is picked up by the neck by a large green-skinned man. Dosukoi calls out his own name (as he does while he is attacking), but he is unable to escape Bido's grip. A few moments later, his body goes limp.

Future Trunks vs. Gokua Winner:  Unknown Trunks is distracted by the great beauty of his battle stage and bends over to sniff some flowers, but dodges just in time as Gokua launches a surprise ki blast. Trunks calls out his opponent for trying to kill him, but Gokua presses forward to attack directly. At the first the two appear evenly matched, but Gokua takes the initiative by using his sword. Trunks demands to know who he is, but Gokua sticks to the fiction that this is part of the tournament by replying that he is just a "Galactic Warrior". Still unable to defeat base-form Trunks, Gokua transforms to become bulkier with red hair. Once again, Gokua appears to have the advantage, dragging Trunks into what appears to be an alternate battle zone (based on a European city). Trunks transforms into a Super Saiyan and plunges his hand into Gokua's chest, killing him.

Son Gohan vs. Bujin Winner:  Inconclusive Son Gohan arrives at the battleground and looks on in wonder at a world of toys, not knowing that what he is seeing is an illusion created by his adversary. Bujin reveals himself and attacks, eventually allowing the mushroom forest where he and Gohan are actually fighting to be revealed. After a short and inconclusive battle, Bujin flies off to rejoin his crew with Gohan right behind.

Battle against Mister Satan

The grand finale of the event was expected to be a battle against Mister Satan. This battle may have been intended to take place in the Western City battleground (where much of the battle between Son Gohan and Bojack took place) as that was not one of the original four locations where the finalists were sent and likely was intended for a different use.

Mister Satan vs. ??? Winner:  Unknown (but how could Mister Satan lose?) Alas, we will only be able to speculate as to the amazing battle that could have been!

Name

Although consistently stated within the movie itself and the official movie pamphlet to be the "Tenka'ichi Dai Budō Taikai", supplemental material has sometimes referred to the tournament under other names. Daizenshuu 6 alternates between calling it the "Tenka'ichi Dai Budōkai" and the "Dai Budō Taikai."
