The Tenka'ichi Dai Budō Taikai is a large-scale martial arts tournament sponsored by Gyōsan Money after the defeat of Cell in the Cell Games. The tournament included 200 participants divided into eight groups of twenty-five. Unlike a traditional Tenka'ichi Budōkai, the matches were held first in a "battle royale" style to select the eight finalists. Those finalists would be divided in half in a series of one-on-one matchups. The winners would face off in a time-based challenge against an "alien" (actually a student from Mister Satan's school); the fastest victory would advance to a final exhibition match against Mister Satan himself. The full tournament was not held due to an interruption by Bojack and his henchmen.

Rules

The rules resembled those of a standard Tenka'ichi Budōkai including no killing, no weapons, and disqualification for leaving the ring. The preliminary rounds appear to have been timed as Kuririn's battle zone tipped over when too many competitors remained at the end of the round; he only won by grabbing onto the edge as his fellow combatants fell around him. Additionally, the final match was won not only by beating your opponent but by doing it more quickly than your fellow finalists.

Summary

The Tenka'ichi Dai Budō Taikai was fought over four rounds, although only the first two rounds were completed before it was interrupted by Bojack and his henchmen. In the first round, eight groups of twenty contestants fought "battle royale"-style to determine the semi-finalists. By apparent coincidence, each of the main cast members fought in a separate battle group and, except for Yamcha, each won their respective match: Son Gohan, Kuririn, Piccolo, Future Trunks, and Tenshinhan. Dosukoi successfully (and accidentally) defeated Yamcha by knocking over the pillar that he had been resting on. Finally, Udō and Kung-fun also won their respective rounds.

In the semi-final, Gohan defeated Udō, Future Trunks defeated Tenshinhan, and Dosukoi defeated Kung-fun. Kuririn faced off against Piccolo and defeated him by default when Piccolo quit the tournament.

The final round with Gohan, Future Trunks, Kuririn, and Dosukoi was not held due to Bojack's interruption. As such, no victor was named and no lucky contestant was able to face off against Mister Satan at the end.

Tournament Grounds - Battle Island

Battle Island during the Tenshinhan vs Trunks fight. A rocky outcropping present for the start of the battle had already been sheered off by a ki blast.

Battle Island is split into several color-coded fighting areas including purple, green, yellow, red, and orange. In addition to those five areas, additional fighting zones are present between the various towers and scattered around the island to create the eight distinct playing fields for the battle royale preliminary rounds. The semi-final battles started on color-coded stages, but participants were free to move around the fighting areas of the island at will, provided they did not fall out of bounds in the water. The final rounds were moved to the large battle zones of Battle Island II.

Although this environment resembles an island, at least some of the facility is mobile and is sailed to the location of Battle Island II, an actual volcanic island, in the for the final round.

Matches

Preliminaries

The preliminary battles were fought in eight simultaneous "battle royale" events scattered around the island, on platforms intermingled not far from the spectators. Many of the battles were given distinct colored floors as well as a mix of obstacles such as ledges, pillars, and even moving platforms. As the battles neared their conclusion, the floors could tip as a way to force weaker players off and ensure a victory in time. Although not numbered directly in the film, the stage numbers given here represent their placement in the winners list.

Preliminary Stage 1

The first preliminary battle was fought on a flat red battleground with a rocky edge that overlooked the water. A key strategy in this stage was pushing opponents off. Dosukoi unsuccessfully tried to chase several combatants off before they were able to turn the table and swarm him, nearly pushing him off instead. Dosukoi used his strength and their momentum to throw many combatants off even while he was pushed nearly to the edge. Later in his battle, he knocked another fighter into a white pillar which had been erected on the battle stage. Yamcha, relaxing on the top while the battle raged around him, was caught off-guard and fell into the water. Dosukoi ultimately succeeded in being the last man standing and advanced to the semi-finals. Dosukoi was the sixth competitor to advance to the semi-finals.

Preliminary Stage 2

The second preliminary battle was not depicted in the film. Kung-Fun was revealed to be the winner. He was the final contestant to advance to the semi-finals.

Preliminary Stage 3

The third preliminary battle took place on an elevated platform above where Kuririn was fighting. The battle was only depicted indirectly as Piccolo knocked combatant after combatant off the stage. Piccolo completed his battle fourth. Unlike the other stages, this one appeared to be (at least in part) yellow and with a guard rail at the edge of the tower.

Preliminary Stage 4

The fourth battle stage was fought in an area with ascending and descending platforms. Kuririn fought with joy, easily defeating every opponent with a smile on his face. It was only when he realized that Piccolo, Son Gohan, and Future Trunks were fighting nearby that his mood dimmed and he realized that he was outmatched. Kuririn continued fighting but had not cleared his stage before the platform he was on began to tilt. As everyone scrambled for a handhold, Kuririn was able to find purchase on the edge of the ring. Once everyone else had fallen off, Kuririn became the winner by default. He was the third combatant to make it to the semi-finals.

Preliminary Stage 5

Tenshinhan's battle, the sixth, was only briefly depicted on TV as Oolong cheered him on. The battle stage was yellow. He was seen performing a spinning head-butt on an unknown fighter. Tenshinhan was the fifth contestant to win his round and advance to the semi-finals.

Preliminary Stage 6

The sixth battle took place on a raised platform with a red floor, just above the area where Kuririn fought in the fourth stage. This battle was primarily depicted indirectly as Trunks knocked many of the combatants off of their level and out of bounds, landing near Kuririn on his battle stage. Trunks eliminated his opponents quickly and was the second challenger to move on to the semi-finals. In addition to the images below, Trunks also defeated another anthropomorphic Wolf (resembling Man-Wolf, but not the same character as below) and a Tiger (resembling Captain Yellow).

Unknown Stage

On an unknown battle stage, a character resembling Man-Wolf successfully fends off attacks from a variety of fighting styles: kempō, boxing, kung-fu, and even lucha libre. Despite countering attack after attack, the wolf steps off the edge of the fighting platform by mistake and falls into the water. This stage is fought on a flat white platform resembling Son Gohan's stage, but it could take place elsewhere.

Semi-Finals

After the battle royale-style preliminary rounds, the competition resumes with a series of four traditional one-on-one battles in the style of a Tenka'ichi Budōkai in order to determine the finalists.

Son Gohan vs. Udō Winner:  Son Gohan (by ring-out) Despite Udō's towering presence and confident attitude, Son Gohan knocks him out of the ring immediately with a foot sweep. He hits him so hard that he flies through a nearby rocky outcropping before landing in the water.

Future Trunks vs. Tenshinhan Winner:  Future Trunks (by ring-out) Tenshinhan and Trunks begin their match by careening around the island in a flurry of movements too quick for the eye to see. They take to the air, must to the astonishment of the audience. Tenshinhan lines up and fires a kiko-ho, but Trunks dodges it and it only destroys a rocky outcropping on battle island. The battle is fierce and the competitors appear nearly evenly matched, although Tenshinhan successfully lands a few blows on Trunks. For a brief time, both competitors fight just inches above the water and disqualification before gaining altitude again. Trunks transforms into Super Saiyan and turns the tide in his favor. In his new form, he tanks through Tenshuinhan's ki blasts to get behind him and knocks him into the water with a single blow to his back. Trunks wins!

Kuririn vs. Piccolo Winner:  Kuririn (by forfeit) As they line up to begin the battle, Piccolo and Kuririn cannot be in more different mental places. Piccolo is aloof and barely seems to think anything of the tournament at all, while Kuririn begins to panic. First, he panics that Piccolo will take the match seriously and use a makakosappo against him, but transitions to anger as Piccolo's stance implies that he's dismissing his abilities entirely. As the buzzer rings, Kuririn lunches at Piccolo at high speed but, in his agitation, misses and launches himself off the edge and nearly into the water. He catches himself by flying at the last moment and returns to the ring, but his lack of poise even makes flying difficult. Piccolo grabs him and tosses him back in the ring, complaining that he hoped to have seen some competitors worth his time. With Kuririn lying on the group, Piccolo flies off and forfeits the match. Kuririn wins.

Dosukoi vs. Kung-fun Winner:  Dosukoi The last semi-final match between Dosukoi and Kung-fun was not presented in the film. We learn from the announcer that it was a hard-fought battle and narrowly won by Dosukoi. The program book that accompanied the film states that Dosukoi won thanks to his powerful utchari technique, a last-ditch move to toss an opponent over your back used in sumo wrestling. He advanced to the finals.

Finals

The finals would have been fought as an unusual time-challenge: Each of the four finalists were randomly selected to battle one of the four "intergalactic warriors" that had come to the competition. (Actually, they were students of Mister Satan dressed as aliens.) Instead of battling each other, the warrior that located and defeated their selected foe the fastest, then returned via an elevator to the surface, would with the round. No explanation is given if none of the four finalists are able to defeat their galactic challenger. Although not clearly stated, it is implied that the winner of this final would receive the competition prizes, the hot springs trip and the money.

However, prior to the match, the four selected students were replaced by four actual "Intergalactic Warriors", members of Bojack's crew. They kept up the fiction of being part of the competition for a time, but the producers realized the swap after Dosukoi was apparently killed and the tournament ended prematurely, leaving Son Gohan and his friends (as well as a reluctant Mister Satan) to clean up the mess.

Kuririn vs. Zangya Winner:  Zangya (by knock-out) Kuririn's pod crash lands in a pool of lava, but he escapes unscathed. He discovers Zangya hidden behind a plume of steam. He stumbles because she is "cute" and she presses her advantage, quickly landing a series of kicks and punches that leave Kuririn stupefied and unable to fight back. She sends him careening into a pile of rocks. Kuririn raises his head to ask who she he before collapsing into unconsciousness.

Dosukoi vs. Bido Winner:  Bido Dosukoi's battle zone is a hot desert. Suddenly, an arm shoots out of the sand and the sumo wrestler is picked up by the neck by a large green-skinned man. Dosukoi calls out his own name (as he does while he is attacking), but despite his struggles he is unable to escape Bido's grip. A few moments later, he stops struggling and slips into unconsciousness and apparent death.

Future Trunks vs. Gokua Winner:  Unknown Trunks is distracted by the great beauty of his battle stage and bends over to sniff some flowers. He dodges just in time as Gokua launches a surprise ki blast. Trunks calls out his opponent for trying to kill him, but Gokua merely presses forward to attack directly. At the first, the two appear evenly matched exchanging punches and kicks (with Trunks still in his base form), but Gokua begins to use his sword to press an advantage. Trunks asks who is he, but Gokua sticks to the fiction that this is part of the tournament by replying that he is just a "Galactic Warrior". With limited progress against Trunks, Gokua transforms and becomes bulkier and with red hair. The two resume their attack. Gokua drags Trunks into what appears to be an alternate battle zone (one based on a European city) and seems to defeat him, but Trunks transforms into a Super Saiyan to defeat him, plunging his hand through Gokua's chest.

Son Gohan vs. Bujin Winner:  Inconclusive Son Gohan arrives at the battleground and looks on in wonder at a world of toys, not knowing that what he is seeing is an illusion created by his adversary. Bujin reveals himself and attacks, eventually allowing the mushroom forest where he and Gohan are actually fighting to be revealed. After a short and inconclusive battle, Bujin flies off to rejoin his crew with Gohan right behind.

Battle against Mister Satan

The grand finale of the event was expected to be a battle against Mister Satan. Although not stated directly, this match was implied to be an exhibition match and not the finale of the event as no one would be expected to defeat Mister Satan, the winner of the Cell Games. This battle may have been intended to take place in the Western City battleground (where much of the battle between Son Gohan and Bojack took place) as that was not one of the original four locations where the finalists were sent and likely was intended for a different use.

Mister Satan vs. ??? Winner:  Unknown (but how could Mister Satan lose?) Alas, we will only be able to speculate as to the amazing battle that could have been!

Name

Although consistently stated within the movie itself and the official movie pamphlet to be the "Tenka'ichi Dai Budō Taikai", supplemental material has sometimes referred to the tournament under other names. Daizenshuu 6 alternates between calling it the "Tenka'ichi Dai Budōkai" and the "Dai Budō Taikai."
