The abandoned city is a fictional location in the world of Dragon Ball by Akira Toriyama. The location, somewhere near Mount Paozu, was featured in Dragon Ball Z Episode 172, scripted by Sumio Uetake. It is an anime-only elaboration of a smaller settlement depicted in Dragon Ball Chapter 392. Son Goku and his family stopped by this city while on a driving excursion to purchase a gift for the Turtle Hermit prior to the Cell Games.
General Overview
The city appears to be a modern metropolis with futuristic buildings similar to those seen in Metro West and other cities. The city's location and name are not given in the anime or manga, but Goku and his family visited the region while on an air-car day trip. The city appears large enough to contain many businesses, however only a clothing store, Lidan, and a restaurant called Don Don House are depicted on screen. The city has easy access to a nearby highway.
Around May of Age 767, the city was abandoned by its inhabitants because of the terror posed by Cell's rampages. Goku and his family observed the population fleeing on an overcrowded highway out of town. No residents were seen still living in the city and no stores were open. Some of the store windows were damaged during the exodus. Although not depicted on screen, the city was presumably repopulated after the the death of Cell.[1]

Production

Due to the schedule challenges inherent in producing a weekly anime series based on a weekly comic, the writers of Dragon Ball Z interjected anime-only material both as a means of extending the runtime and to flesh out the Dragon Ball universe. In the manga version of the story from Dragon Ball Chapter 392, Goku and his family drive home through a rural area. The abandoned city depicted in the anime is an elaboration of a single panel in that chapter, although the settlement depicted there is possibly nothing more than a rural store. Gohan's later need to attend school in Satan City (far off to the north) is difficult to reconcile with a large nearby city appearing in this episode.[notes 1]
Due to reused animation, Goku and his family appear to pass the same stretch of road, with the same stores in the same order, multiple times in their car.

Notes
- ↑ Dragon Ball Z Movie 8 also depicts an unnamed city presumably not far from the Son family home, however there do not appear to be any connections between the location presented there and the city in Dragon Ball Z Episode 172.
