Hero Profiles
Season three of Dragon Ball kicks off with a test of wills between Goku and Master Korin. If Goku can get his hands on the talking kitty's sacred water, he'll be able to boost his strength and speed for the difficult mission that lies ahead. The little man is gearing up for his biggest adventure ever, and this time it's personal!
Goku promised Upa he would collect the seven Dragon Balls and use them to resurrect Bora, the boy's slain father. But first, he's got a score to settle with Mercenary and the Red Ribbon Army. Bringing down the world's most feared paramilitary organization is no simple task. Commander Red has a lethal arsenal of high-tech weaponry at his disposal. Goku, on the other hand, flies into battle with only his Power Pole, the Flying Nimbus, and the lessons he learned from Korin and Roshi. He should wait for his friends to arrive before attacking Red Ribbon Headquarters, but there are some things a man - or even a bushy-tailed boy - just has to do on his own.
Even after Goku pulls the plug on Commander Red and his cronies, there's still the matter of find the final Dragon Ball. Bulma's Dragon Radar is broken beyond repair, but Master Roshi's got a sister who might be able to help - for a price. When Fortuneteller Baba reads your future, you either pay with piles of cash or pools of your own blood! To get the information he needs, Goku must defeat Baba's five fearsome fighters - or die trying. Each warrior is more lethal than the last, and the fifth fighter is hiding something surprising behind his mask.
Once he gets the lowdown from Baba, Goku races towards a showdown with Emperor Pilaf. The little green [sic] fiend has the seventh Dragon Ball, and he foolishly thinks he's ready to go toe-to-toe with the martial arts whiz kid. Big Mistake [sic]. Nothing can stop Goku from collecting all seven Dragon Balls, summoning Shenron, and bringing Bora back.
Reuniting a happy family may top Goku's list of things to do, but knocking out the competition at the World Martial Arts Tournament is a close second. From a showdown with Sky Dragon to his adventures in Demon Land, Goku walks the Earth taking on all challengers in preparation for the biggest tournament of his life.
- Master Roshi's Pupils
Aspiring martial artists from all across the globe travel to Turtle Island in the hopes that Master Roshi will train them. The old hermit may look like a relic from days gone by, but his skill as a teacher is unparalleled. He's the driving force behind Goku and Krillin's amazing success, and his grueling training regimen is among the most difficult in the world. Unfortunately, Roshi rarely accepts more than one or two pupils at a time, and if a potential student doesn't know any pretty girls, he's likely to be turned away.
The Turtle Hermit's training methods include strapping weighted turtle shells to the backs of his students and ordering them to skip long distances while delivering milk. The lukcy few granted the opportunity to study under Roshi are often seen practicing evasive maneuvers while avoiding the deadly jaws of various man-eating beasts. While the methods may be unorthodox, the results are unquestionable. His most advanced students - such as Krillin and Goku - have even exhibited an ability to harness the awesome power of the Kamehameha Wave.
At the conclusion of the Fortuneteller Baba Saga, Yamcha begs Roshi to take him on as a student. He's seen what the old master's experience did for his friends, and he desperately wants to become stronger before the next World Martial Arts Tournament. Master Roshi is predictably reluctant to welcome another student to the Kame House, but Bulma uses her feminine wiles to convince the lecherous old codger that Yamcha is a worthy pupil.)
- Master Roshi
- Personality: Lecherous, scheming, wily, strange
- Techniques: Kamehameha Wave, Sleepy Boy Technique, and the Lightning Flash Surprise Attack
- Dream: To get a good look at Bulma or Launch
- First Appeared in: Episode 3
- Japanese Voice Actor: Kôhei Miyauchi
- American Voice Actor: Mike McFarland
Not much changes on Turtle Island. Master Roshi is still more interested in pretty girls than karate chops, but the promise of a bikini-clad Bulma lounging around the Kame House might convince him to accept a new student - Yamcha! The talented and eager fighter wants to train under the Turtle Hermit, and his on-again, off-again girlfriend will do almost anything to make it happen.
In addition to training the next generation of fearsome fighters, Roshi shows he can still help Goku by guiding his star pupil through the treacherous Fortuneteller Baba saga. The old master has seen it all during his lifetime, and his wisdom is invaluable to his students.
During the world Martial Arts Tournament, Master Roshi gets his kicks by donning his Jackie Chun disguise and showing off his own lethal moves!
- Korin
- Personality: Mischievous, wise, and sleepy
- Techniques: None
- Dream: To find a nice, quiet place where he can sleep for eternity
- First Appeared in: Episode 61
- Japanese Voice Actor: Ichirô Nagai
- American Voice Actor: Christopher R. Sabat
The imorrtal guardian of Korin Tower relies on feline intuition to determine who is worthy of his sacred water. Virtuous warriors may earn the right to drink the strength-increasing elixir, but evil men will be turned away without a drop.
Goku endures three days of exhausting challenges before being allowed to drink, but that's still much faster than a certain legendary martial artist. Years ago, Master Roshi shared a similar encounter with Korin, and it took the Turtle Hermit three years to attain the magic water.
Enemy Profiles
The Red Ribbon Army is a paramilitary organization headed by the maniacal Commander Red and his right hand man, Officer Black. Feared throughout the world for his cutthroat tactics, Commander Red will stop at nothing to get his hands on the magic Dragon Balls and make his wish for ultimate power!
After drinking the sacred water found atop Korin Tower, Goku begins his onslaught against the Red Ribbon Army. His first target is Mercenary Tao, the villain responsible for Bora's death. Thanks to his increased strength and speed, Goku makes short work of Tao and moves on to the next step of his mission - invading Red Ribbon Headquarters!
Although Commander Red has an impressive arsenal at his disposal, exceedingly cruel treatment of his subordinates has diminished the ranks of his once-mighty fighting force. When Goku attacks the base, Colonel Violet avoids the skirmish, instead choosing to loot the Red Ribbon vault. Her love of money trumps any desire for military glory, and she heartlessly abandons the tyrant she once called "leader".
In the end, Commander Red is assassinated by Officer Black, a former confidant who's grown tired of Red's constant abuse and belittling. Black assumes the title of commander and begins preparations for a final showdown with Goku, but it's of no use. The lessons Goku learned from Master Korin have made him too strong. There is no weapon in existence that can stop him. Goku strikes the final blow against the once-feared army by destroying Commander Black as he attempts to escape.
Fortuneteller Baba never misses when it comes to predicting the future, but her services don't come cheap. It costs millions of Zeni for Baba to even blow the dust off her crystal ball. For those who can't afford a look at the future, Baba has a payment plan. Fight her five "other-worldly" fighters - pay with the blood they'll make you spill. Should you somehow defeat all five, Baba will tell your fortune for free!
The first of Baba's fighters is a fanged-freak who goes by the name of Fangs the Vampire. Krillin thinks he's up for the challenge, but one bite to the head and the bald brawler is ready to throw in the towel. Luckily, Puar and Upa have a stinky trick up their garlic-filled sleeves.
Fighter number two isn't quite as easy to pick out of a crowd. See-Through gives Yamcha all he can handle until Krillin dreams up a scheme to force the invisible man to be seen. All he needs is Bulma, an easily-removable top, and a couple of nose-fulls of Master Roshi's blood. Once See-Through is covered in covetous corpsucles, Yamcha has little trouble knocking him out!
Next up, Yamcha goes toe-to-toe with Bandages the Mummy in the Devil's Toilet. Bandages is adept at using his wrap to entangle opponents or avoiding a flushing defeat! He may look slow and cumbersome, but Yamcha quickly learns a painful lesson - Bandages has the strength and speed to go the distance. It's a good thing Goku is waiting in the wings, or Upa's dreams of seeing his father alive would have gone down the drain. Instead, Goku uses his nearly-impenetrable defense and power-packed punches to put the mummy back in his tomb!
Baba's fourth fighter is a bad dude who feeds off his opponent's bad vibes. Spike the Devil Man is a two-time winner of the World Martial Arts Tournament, and he uses his Devilmite Beam to blow up his enemies from the inside out by expanding the evil found in their hearts. Too bad he decided to tangle with Goku, who - as is evident from his ability to ride the Flying Nimbus - is completely pure of heart. Without his ability to exploit negative energy, Spike is no match for Master Roshi's star pupil.
When Bulma's Dragon Radar is unable to locate the seventh Dragon Ball, Master Roshi suggests a visit to his older sister, Fortuneteller Baba. The mysterious Baba possesses various psychic abilities that she exploits for her own financial gain. During her hundreds of years on Earth, Baba has perfected the arts of mental telepathy, mind control, predicting the future, and materializing objects out of thin air. There is, however, a catch. Baba doesn't put her abilities to work for free. If you want your fortune told, you must either pay a hefty sum or defeat her five "other-worldly" fighters.
Speaking of "other-worldly" fighters, Baba has yet another unique skill. She can travel to the "Other World" and bring back anyone she likes for a single day. Near the end of the Fortuneteller Baba Saga, this talent comes into play when Goku faces off against a "Mysterious Fifth Man" who smells eerily familiar.
The Mysterious Fifth Man is the most formidable of Fortuneteller Baba's five "other-worldly" fighters. His identity is hidden by a mask, but Goku quickly detects something familiar about his scent. Master Roshi also feels he knows the mystery man from some place, but he is unable to recall where. Judging by the masked man's prowess as a fighter, Baba likely summoned him from some "other" world inhabited by warriors of great skill. Not only can the Fifth Man handle Goku's attacks, but he knows the little fighter's lone weakness and uses it to inflict a brutal beating.
Shen is the master of the Crane School of martial arts, and an old acquaintance of Master Roshi. The two legendary warriors studied together long ago, but Shen chose to follow a much darker path than the honorable Turtle Hermit. Master Shen - who is also Mercenary Tao's brother - declares war on all students of the Turtle School after learning of his brother's death at the hands of Goku. Shen's devious pupils - Tien and Chiaotzu - are only too happy to oblige their master, having previously fought with Goku during his pre-tournament travels.
Tien is Master Shen's most advanced student and a dangerous fighter to tangle with. Goku first encounters Tien and Chiaotzu when he foils their plan to use InoShikaCho to extort money from unsuspecting villagers. As a result, Tien enters the World Martial Arts Tournament eager to settle the score against Goku and his friends.
From the very beginning, Tien and Yamcha develop an intense dislike for each other. The two fighters constantly trade insults, and they're eager to exchange blows at center stage. Driven by a need to avenge Mercenary Tao's death, Tien unleashes his anger on Yamcha, needlessly breaking his opponent's leg in the waning moments of their match. Barring an unforeseen transformation, Tien will continue to travel down the same sinister path as his master.
Chiatozu, another of Master Shen's students, is Tien's best friend and constant companion. He is easily identifiable by his white skin, red cheeks, and tendency to levitate rather than walk. Chiaotzu is a psychic martial artist who uses a lethal combination of Dodon Waves and telekinesis to cripple his opponents.
Despite his own shortcomings, Chiaotzu repeatedly teases Krillin for being vertically challenged, even going so far as to call him a "midget". There is no love lost between these fighters, and the bad blood carries over into their showdown at the World Martial Arts Tournament. In the midst of their match, Master Shen demands that Chiaotzu use his psychic powers to destroy Krillin in the slowest and most agonizing manner possible, but Master Roshi's pupil is quick to pick up on the fact that his opponent can't do simple math without the help of his fingers.
