"Dragon Ball Z Season Two" is Funimation's second "season"-based DVD box set (of nine total), presenting Dragon Ball Z television episodes 40-74 in a standard-definition (480p), cropped, widescreen, "digitally remastered" format, originally released 22 May 2007 in North America. These "season" sets are both colloquially known and internally at Funimation referred to as the "Orange Bricks."[1]

General Overview

Each orange brick features episodes of Dragon Ball Z with branching video tracks depending on the language selected:

  • With English voices selected: an altered English-only episode title card is displayed; openings are creditless; each episode's ending has English reversion credits unique to each episode's production.
  • With Japanese voices selected: the original Japanese episode title card is displayed; openings are creditless; each episode's ending has credits that are all actually those ripped from the first episode).

The opening theme uses its second animation version (of four total), while the ending theme uses its first animation version (of two total). Funimation-specific credits are featured on the English video track's ending animation. All eyecatches are presented in their correct location mid-episode. No "next episode previews" are provided. The English audio (with original soundtrack) is selected by default.

Though the series is historically divided into "story arcs" in Japan, this release marks Funimation's first branding of arbitrary "seasons" for a home video release, the delineations of which do not correspond to their own actual broadcast seasons from either syndication or cable broadcasts.

Previous to this release, episodes 40 through 67 of Dragon Ball Z were not available subtitled in North America (Region 1), having only been available heavily edited on VHS and DVD featuring the Canadian ("Ocean Studios") voice cast. The "Ultimate Uncut Edition" DVD line was planned to cover the first 67 episodes with Funimation's new in-house redub, but was cancelled after Volume 9, in favor of these new "season" releases; the content of the "Ultimate Uncut" episodes did, however, air in their entirety on Cartoon Network and Toonami's "Adult Swim" block.

From Episode 68 and forward, the "U.S. Broadcast Audio" uses the Faulconer Productions score and reverts the dub track to a reimagining of the 1999 Broadcast version (featured on the first run of home releases in North America). There are many differences between this version and FUNimation's original broadcast audio; most notably for featuring re-written lines of dialogue and vocal re-reads for prominent characters.

This DVD box originally included a booklet with short synopses for every episode; these are included in the table exactly as they were written. Funimation no longer includes the booklets with new printings.

Dragon Balls: Namekian vs. Earth
There are seven magical Dragon Balls, each containing between one and seven stars and a glow that emanates when they are near other Dragon Balls. When the seven Earth Dragon Balls are gather together, the Eternal Dragon, Shenron, is summoned to grant one wish.

The Earth's Dragon Balls were created by Kami. While extremely powerful, they do have some limits. They cannot grant a wish greater than the power of their creator, they will not grant the same wish twice, and they will lose their power when their creator dies.

It is rumored that the original Dragon Balls are on Namek and the Namekian balls may be even more powerful than the Dragon Balls on Earth. When the Earth's Dragon Balls lose their powers, Vegeta and the allies (Bulma, Krillin and Gohan) rush to Namek to see if these Dragon Balls exist. Vegeta wants eternal life and the allies want to revive their friends.

There are differences between the Namekian and Earth Dragon Balls. Dragon Balls of Namekian origins were created by Guru, are larger and can grant three wishes instead of one. The Namekian Dragon Balls can bring more than one person back to life, as long as they died by unnatural causes. Also, very important, even after gathering the Dragon Balls on Namek, one must know how to summon Namek's Eternal Dragon, Porunga.

Booklet

Original DVD set booklet (PDF)

In 2011, Funimation discontinued the inclusion of printed booklets within their Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball GT DVD season sets; PDFs were subsequently made available on official Funimation websites.[2]

Character Profiles

The booklet's profiles are included below exactly as they were written. The profiles were originally accompanied by character art.

Hero Profiles

After the battle with Vegeta, many Z Fighters have fallen and the Earth Dragon Balls have disappeared. Gohan, Bulma and Krillin head to Planet Namek in hopes that the Namekian Dragon Balls can bring their friends back!

Named after his adoptive grandfather, Gohan is Goku and Chi-Chi's eldest son. He is idealistic, good, and pure like his father. With Goku's departure to the next dimension and the imminent arrival of the Saiyans, Gohan is key to the survival of Earth. Thus Piccolo, a former enemy of his father, trains Gohan for the upcoming battle. Although initially a wimp, Gohan's training in the wilderness and subsequent fighting make him both brave and loyal.

In Dragon Ball, Bulma was a mixed up teenager with blue hair and a personality quirk that wouldn't allow her to shut up for a second. Now, she's blossomed into a mixed woman with that same personality quirk. She is a mechanical genius who can operate and fix anything. For instance, she discovers and enhances the capabilities of the Saiyan Scouter. Her father is Dr. Brief, of the famous Capsule Corporation.

As a young boy, Krillin studied martial arts with Goku under Master Roshi. Originally, he and Goku were fierce rivals, but now they are best friends. A short, bald warrior, loyal Krillin provides comic relief in tense situations as he tries to keep up with Goku and some of the other more powerful warriors. A good fighter on his own accord, he's always there to help Goku. He can and has saved his friend's life more than once. Goku constantly encourages Krillin to have confidence as he learns to be a remarkable fighter.

Goku is the hero of Dragon Ball Z, the most powerful warrior on Earth. When the Saiyans arrive, Goku learns the mysterious secret of his own past: he is a Saiyan formerly named Kakarot. Goku was sent to Earth as a baby to destroy the planet, but a head injury as a child scrambled Goku's programming. Instead of growing up to become a destructive super-warrior, he became innocent and pure of heart, fighting for good. The battle with Vegeta has just ended leaving Goku pretty banged up. He stays behind to recover when Bulma, Krillin and Gohan head to Namek in search of the Dragon Balls. But he can't stay away for long!

Enemy Profiles

Frieza is the most powerful and evil being in the Universe with no rival being even close to his strength! Upon learning about the legendary Namekian Dragon Balls, Frieza is consumed with a desire to obtain them to summon the Eternal Dragon and gain his wish for immortality. Then he can rule the entire universe, unrivaled, forever.

His ruthlessness is well known. Understanding the capability of the Saiyans as fighters and their uncanny ability to gain strength after recovering from injuries, Frieza knows this race might one day challenge his own preeminence. He destroys their planet and only a handful of Saiyans who happened to be away at the time survived. In his search for the Dragon Balls on Namek, Frieza ruthlessly and predictably eliminates all who get in his way. The very mention of his name strikes dread and fear in the hearts of all who have heard of him, prompting King Kai to warn Goku not to even think about battling with Frieza.

No evil being is complete without his group of allies. Zarbon and Dodoria are Frieza's two evil right hand men. They carry out his requests promptly, efficiently and without question. They know Frieza's character too well. Frieza also has an elite fighting force known throughout the universe as The Ginyu Force. Individually, they are all stronger than any warrior on Earth, including Goku. Together, they combine to be unbeatable.

Zarbon is one of Frieza's right hand men. He is a very handsome green haired fighter, who even catches the eye of Bulma, despite the fact that he's one of the bad guys. Zarbon cannot keep up the flawless appearance forever though, as he has to transform into a huge repitilian-like creature to fight Vegeta.

One of Frieza's top two henchmen, Dodoria is a large, pink alien with spikes on his head. While chasing Gohan on Namek, he runs into Vegeta!

Vegeta is a powerful Saiyan prince who comes to Earth in hopes of gaining immortality. Things don't go as planned, and he leaves Earth defeated and and [sic] crushed. While recovering on one of Frieza's planets, Vegeta learns of Frieza's trip to Namek to find the Dragon Balls. Vegeta is furious about the possible consequences and rushes to Namek to find the Dragon Balls first, openly declaring himself an enemy of Frieza.

Evil and mighty, the Ginyu Force is hailed as the most powerful team in the universe. It is composed of give members, each one very powerful and possessing unique attacks and fighting advantages. When Dodoria and Zarbon are unable to eliminate the allies and collect the seven Namekian Dragon Balls, Frieza summons the Ginyu Force. Between battles, they enjoy such goofy past times as watching soap operas, playing "rock, paper, scissors" to decide who will fight who, and making bets over chocolate nut bars, their favorite food.

Captain Ginyu, with purple skin and black horns, is the strongest of the team, and its leader. He has the powerful ability to switch bodies with his opponents. He switches bodies with Goku, giving Captain Ginyu the advantage of fighting with Goku's powerful body and also of confusing the team of good guys. This capability leads to his ultimate demise as he accidentally and forever changes bodies with a frog.

Burter is a giant, blue creature who believes he is the one of the fastest beings alive.

A sadistic, large brute with red hair, Recoome possesses incredible strength, but is slow in speed.

  • Speical Ability: Recoome Boom Breath Blast, Eraser Gun

Jeice has an orange face and huge white hair. He is neither super fast nor super powerful. Instead, Jeice is a more balanced combination of strength and speed, which makes him very dangerous.

Guldo is a short, pudgy, four-eyed creature. He makes up for his lack of strength with his ability to manipulate space and time. Able to read minds, control objects and stop time, Guldo can easily conquer a much stronger foe.

Namek

The people of Namek are an interesting, peaceful race. Their hierarchy is based on villages, each governed by Elders - governed overall by the Eldest. The villages each contain one Dragon Ball which is guarded by the elder of that village, who would rather die than turn the Dragon Ball over to an evil force.

The Namekians are, as best as can be described, a combination of reptile and insect: green and able to regenerate limbs. They are born into one station or function in life which they do their best to fulfill. They are all unisex and one warrior can be absorbed into another.

Piccolo and Kami are from the Planet Namek, but now live on Earth. Not aware of their heritage, Kami instinctively creates Dragon Balls similar to the ones on Namek. Kami exhibits the same peace-loving characteristics of most Namekians, and Piccolo demonstrates the regenerative capabilities.

Their race, unfortunately, is threatened with extinction as Frieza and Vegeta ruthlessly pursue the Namekian Dragon Balls and immortality.

The wise, peace-loving, selfless Guru is the eldest of all Namekians and father to all of his kind. Namekians are unisexual and are hatched from eggs. Guru is the creator of the Namekian Dragon Balls and when he passes away, the power of the Dragon Balls will also pass away. Using his powers, Guru brings out secret abilities within Krillin and Gohan. He also bestows on Dende a powerful healing ability.

The lone survivor of his village on the Planet Namek, Dende was rescued by Krillin and Gohan. Unlike Piccolo and other Namekian warriors, Dende does no possess strong fighting abilities, but he does have another crucial capability: the power to heal.

Possessing great strength, Nail is a Namekian warrior who guards the elder Guru and ensures his safety. His appearance is similar to Piccolo's. Nail has the power to regenerate limbs and can fuse with another of the Namekian race.

Tidbits

About The Transfer

This DVD box originally included a booklet. On the back side, a summary of Funimation's questionable methods of remastering the footage is provided. This summary is included below exactly as it was written. Funimation no longer includes the booklets with new printings.

To accomplish the Dragon Ball Z remaster process, FUNimation worked with Video Post & Transfer, a Dallas-based post-production house. The original Japanese film masters were transferred via an industry-standard Spirit DataCine, passing through a Digital Vision DVNR1000 to remove film grain, and then receiving a further round of processing using a Teranex VC600 video computer. These digital noise-reduction units each helped to remove thousands of instances of dirt, scratches, and debris.

The cleaned footage signal was then run through a da Vinci 2K Plus color system to ensure that the colors were true to the original film prints. The da Vinci 2K Plus is an industry standard system used for color correction in feature films and broadcast, and was primarily used in this instance to set the levels of the whites and blacks in the film in order to present the colors in a manner faithful to the original prints.

The final media for transfer was Sony's HDCAM, a fully high-definition digital tape. The film was laid to tape at 1080p HD at 24 frames per second. The frame-rate is important to note, as it allowed the film, which was originally created at 24 frames per second, to be transferred to tape frame by frame. This frame-rate prevented any unnecessary data from being added to the final video, and preserves the film masters at the highest quality possible.
