"Dragon Ball Z Season Three" is Funimation's third "season"-based DVD box set (of nine total), presenting Dragon Ball Z television episodes 75-107 in a standard-definition (480p), cropped, widescreen, "digitally remastered" format, originally released 18 September 2007 in North America. These "season" sets are both colloquially known and internally at Funimation referred to as the "Orange Bricks."[1]
General Overview
Each orange brick features episodes of Dragon Ball Z with branching video tracks depending on the language selected:
- With English voices selected: an altered English-only episode title card is displayed; openings are creditless; each episode's ending has English reversion credits unique to each episode's production.
- With Japanese voices selected: the original Japanese episode title card is displayed; openings are creditless; each episode's ending has credits that are all actually those ripped from the first episode).
The opening theme uses its second animation version (of four total), while the ending theme uses its first animation version (of two total). Funimation-specific credits are featured on the English video track's ending animation. All eyecatches are presented in their correct location mid-episode. No "next episode previews" are provided. The English audio (with original soundtrack) is selected by default.
- Opening: "CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA" (v.2)
- Ending: "Come Out, Incredible ZENKAI Power!"
- Eyecatch: (Goku and Gohan) (v.1)
Though the series is historically divided into "story arcs" in Japan, this release marks Funimation's first branding of arbitrary "seasons" for a home video release, the delineations of which do not correspond to their own actual broadcast seasons from either syndication or cable broadcasts.
The "U.S. Broadcast Audio" uses the Faulconer Productions score and reverts the dub track to a reimagining of the 1999 Broadcast version (featured on the first run of home releases in North America). There are many differences between this version and FUNimation's original broadcast audio; most notably for featuring re-written lines of dialogue and vocal re-reads for prominent characters.

A short, bald warrior, loyal Krillin provides comic relief in tense situations as he tries to keep up with Goku and some of the other more powerful warriors. A good fighter on his own accord, he's always there to help Goku. He can and has saved his friend's life more than once. Goku constantly encourages Krillin to have confidence as he learns to be a remarkable fighter.

Though physically smaller than Goku, Vegeta can power up to unbelievable levels. Ambitious and determined, Vegeta wants the Dragon Balls to gain immortality. He is determined to destroy Freeza. At times, he fights on the side of the good guys.
- Dende
- Race: Namekian
- Techniques: Healing
- Japanese Voice Actor: Tomiko Suzuki
- American Voice Actor: Ceyli Delgadillo [sic][b]
The lone survivor of his village on the Planet Namek, Dende was rescued by Krillan [sic] and Gohan. Unlike Piccolo and other Namekian warriors, Dende does not possess strong fighting abilities, but he does have another crucial capability: the power to heal.
The Namekian Dragon, Porunga, can be summoned after gathering all seven of the Namekian Dragon Balls. He is more brutal looking than the Earth Dragon, Shenron. Also, he has the power to grant three wishes instead of one, as long as the wishes do not exceed the power of the one who created the Dragon Balls and as long as this [sic] creator lives.
Enemy Profiles
Seemingly invincible and power-hungry with absolutely no compassion, Frieza is feared as the most powerful and evil being in the Universe with no rival being even close to his to his strength. In his search for the Dragon Balls on Namek, he ruthlessly and predictably eliminates all who get in his way.
Frieza is a lizard-like creature who can shape-shift into four stages of forms, with each form more powerful than the last. In his first form, Frieza is in a space pod. The second form has Frieza with two horns on his head and a larger body. In his third form, Frieza is in his biggest body and his back is bent. The fourth form is the perfect form. He is in a small body with no angle on his body.
King Kai's Planet
Living in the Other World, King Kai is known throughout the universe as one of the greatest fighters and martial arts teachers (although his teaching methods are rather unorthodox). His house is on a tiny planet at the end of Snake Way. The small planet has ten times the gravity of Earth, and is thus an ideal training site. His companions include of goofy monkey named Bubbles and a grasshopper named Gregory. King Kai possesses a humorous, corny sense of humor (he's always telling jokes or puns) as well as great wisdom,. Fortunately for our friends, he can communicate telepathically, giving them good advice and warnings in critical situations. King Kai trains Goku in preparation for the Saiyans return after his fight with Raditz. He also trains other Z Fighters when they are in the Other World.
Tidbits
About The Transfer
This DVD box originally included a booklet. On the back side, a summary of Funimation's questionable methods of remastering the footage is provided. This summary is included below exactly as it was written. Funimation no longer includes the booklets with new printings.
To accomplish the Dragon Ball Z remaster process, FUNimation worked with Video Post & Transfer, a Dallas-based post-production house. The original Japanese film masters were transferred via an industry-standard Spirit DataCine, passing through a Digital Vision DVNR1000 to remove film grain, and then receiving a further round of processing using a Teranex VC600 video computer. These digital noise-reduction units each helped to remove thousands of instances of dirt, scratches, and debris.
The cleaned footage signal was then run through a da Vinci 2K Plus color system to ensure that the colors were true to the original film prints. The da Vinci 2K Plus is an industry standard system used for color correction in feature films and broadcast, and was primarily used in this instance to set the levels of the whites and blacks in the film in order to present the colors in a manner faithful to the original prints.
The final media for transfer was Sony's HDCAM, a fully high-definition digital tape. The film was laid to tape at 1080p HD at 24 frames per second. The frame-rate is important to note, as it allowed the film, which was originally created at 24 frames per second, to be transferred to tape frame by frame. This frame-rate prevented any unnecessary data from being added to the final video, and preserves the film masters at the highest quality possible.
