"Dragon Ball Z Season Four" is Funimation's fourth "season"-based DVD box set (of nine total), presenting Dragon Ball Z television episodes 108-139 in a standard-definition (480p), cropped, widescreen, "digitally remastered" format, originally released 19 February 2008 in North America. These "season" sets are both colloquially known and internally at Funimation referred to as the "Orange Bricks."[1]

General Overview

Each orange brick features episodes of Dragon Ball Z with branching video tracks depending on the language selected:

  • With English voices selected: an altered English-only episode title card is displayed; openings are creditless; each episode's ending has English reversion credits unique to each episode's production.
  • With Japanese voices selected: the original Japanese episode title card is displayed; openings are creditless; each episode's ending has credits that are all actually those ripped from the first episode).

The opening theme uses its second and third animation versions (of four total), while the ending theme uses its first animation version (of two total). Funimation-specific credits are featured on the English video track's ending animation. All eyecatches are presented in their correct location mid-episode. No "next episode previews" are provided. The English audio (with original soundtrack) is selected by default.

Though the series is historically divided into "story arcs" in Japan, this release marks Funimation's first branding of arbitrary "seasons" for a home video release, the delineations of which do not correspond to their own actual broadcast seasons from either syndication or cable broadcasts.

The "U.S. Broadcast Audio" uses the Faulconer Productions score and reverts the dub track to the 1999 Broadcast version (featured on the first run of home releases in North America). There are small differences between this version and FUNimation's original broadcast audio; most notably the removal of some added sound effects.

In 2011, Funimation discontinued the inclusion of printed booklets within their Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball GT DVD season sets; PDFs were subsequently made available on official Funimation websites.[2]

Character Profiles

The booklet's profiles are included below exactly as they were written. The profiles were originally accompanied by character art.

Hero Profiles

Named after his adoptive grandfather, Gohan is Goku and Chi-Chi's eldest son. He is idealistic, good, and pure like his father. When Goku departs to the next dimension, Piccolo trains Gohan for the upcoming arrival of the Saiyans. Although initially a wimp, Gohan's training in the wilderness and subsequent fighting make him both brave and loyal. His tremendous power is accounted for by the incredible mix between earthling and Saiyan which produces an even stronger being than either human or Saiyan alone.

  • Trunks
    • Race: Half-Saiyan Half-Earthling
    • Personality: Mysterious, extremely strong and determined, and also humble and kind
    • Dream: To save his world in the future from destruction by the Androids
    • First Appeared in: Episode 119
    • Japanese Voice Actor: Takeshi Kusao
    • American Voice Actor: Eric Vale

Trunks is the son of Bulma— a headstrong, technical genius— and Vegeta— one of the most powerful fighters in the Dragon Ball Z universe. He is from the future and has witnessed a threat to Earth which cannot be stopped. He has come back in time to try to save the future Earth, only to find our heroes facing their own peril.

Much to the amazement of the Z gang, Trunks immediately turns Super Saiyan and defeats Frieza and King Cold. He gives Goku medicine to prevent his death from a heart virus and tells them of Earth's coming predicament. The Z-Fighters immediately go into training, and Trunks returns to his own time.

  • Chi-Chi
    • Race: Earthling
    • Personality: Bossy, irritated, and believes that mental discipline will get someone (her son Gohan) further in life than muscles and physical strength
    • Techniques: None that she uses except maybe nagging
    • Dream: That her son finds extreme financial security through a job that won't kill him
    • First Appeared in: Episode 1
    • Japanese Voice Actor: Naoko Watanabe, Mayumi Shou [sic][a]
    • American Voice Actor: Cynthia Cranz

A beautiful girl who Goku saves when they are both young, Chi-Chi grows up to become Goku's wife and the mother of his son Gohan. Chi-Chi is a loving wife and a patient, doting mother, but she believes their son should develop his brain instead of his brawn. This sometimes brings her into direct conflict with Goku and his friends who put a high value on fighting skills. But that doesn't mean that Chi-Chi can't take care of herself. Her father, the great warrior Ox-King, who trained under Master Roshi along with Goku's grandfather, wanted to make sure to bring up a daughter who could take care of herself. So he molded her into a formidable fighter who can defend her loved ones against the forces of darkness.

The fate of the world once again rests on the shoulders of its greatest champion. This time, Goku must win over an even more powerful enemy than Frieza. He must save Earth from the Androids - powerful beings created to be perfect fighting machines. They are on a search and destroy mission to find Goku. Amidst a battle with Android 19, Goku succumbs to the predicted heart virus. Only the antidote that Trunks has brought from the future can save him.

Piccolo has undergone an amazing transformation since the days when he was Goku's archenemy fighting for control of the earth [sic]. He is a true defender of Earth and loyal friend to Goku, Gohan and the others.

Piccolo is on a secret mission. He is going to merge with Kami to become stronger than before. In this combined form, Piccolo may be the only one strong enough to win the fight to save Earth. But first, he must convince Kami...

As a young boy, Krillin studied martial arts with Goku under Master Roshi. Originally, he and Goku were fierce rivals, but now they are best friends. A short, bald warrior, loyal Krillin provides comic relief in tense situations as he tries to keep up with Goku and some of the other more powerful warriors. A good fighter on his own accord, he's always there to help Goku. He can and has saved his friend's life more than once. Goku constantly encourages Krillin to have confidence as he learns to be a remarkable fighter.

Vegeta is a powerful Saiyan prince. He and his comrade Nappa are two of the last surviving Saiyans. They come to Earth to destroy all life and sell the planet. Though physically smaller than Goku, Vegeta can power up to unbelievable levels. Ambitious and determined, Vegeta wants the Dragon Balls to gain immortality.

Vegeta steps into the fray after the heart virus weakens Goku. With his incredible power, he defeats Android 19 and bluffs Android 20 into fleeing. But even his great strength is no match for Android 18's limitless supply of energy. Vegeta may be battered, but he does not give up.

Yamcha is a longtime friend and ally of Goku's, though he was once a notorious bandit. He is sometimes accompanied by Puar, his devoted cat companion. Yamcha possesses a great fighting spirit. At one time, he and Bulma were boyfriend and girlfriend, though Yamcha's womanizing ways ultimately led to the demise of that relationship.

Unluckily for Yamcha, he is the first to find the androids and obtains knowledge of their mighty power in the worst possible way (but he recovers with the help of a senzu bean).

Kami, guardian of Earth, is originally from the Planet Namek. He created the Dragon Balls on Earth. Desiring to be good and pure, Kami cast off his negative evil side which became Piccolo. Thus the two are mysteriously linked. If and when one passes away, the other will pass away also. And of course, if Kami passes away, so will the power of Earth's Dragon Balls. Kami lives with his friend Mr. Popo on Kami's Lookout, a tower which floats high above the Earth.

Faced with the threat of the Androids, Kami is called upon to make a difficult choice when Piccolo appears, demanding that they reunite into their former self. If Kami agrees, Piccolo will become a "Super Namek", a being with enough power to possibly defeat the evil Androids. But this chance for victory comes at a great price...

Tien is a three-eyed man originally trained by one of Master Roshi's rivals, though he eventually becomes a Z Fighter. He beat Goku at a worldwide martial arts tournament, is able to stop a waterfall with a blast, and can crush rocks on his head. His fighting techniques include the ability to hover in the air, throw concentration bombs, blind with flashes of light, and split into two or four separate entities. Tien is excited about being trained by Kami and willing to fight against the Saiyans despite the odds. Tien can communicate telepathically with Chiaotzu, his best friend.

Enemy Profiles

Garlic Jr. is an evil being with keen mental powers and devilish plans to take over the universe. He can transform from a diminutive being into a large, monstrous tyrant.

His biggest desire is destroy the Namekian guardian of Earth, the wise and pure Kami, in order to rule the Earth. Garlic's father had competed for the position of Earth's guardian, but he was stopped when Kami discovered his evil intentions. Garlic Jr. was granted immortality by the Eternal Dragon Shenron after collecting Earth's seven Dragon Balls, but he is locked in the Dead Zone, a black void of his own creation.

The Spice Boys consist of four evil warriors who are under the command of Garlic Jr. They are strong, brave and evil, and are totally devoted to Garlic Jr. They give the saga a bit of comical edge with their names: Mustard, Spice, Salt and Vinegar. The leader is Spice, a white-haired villain and the most handsome of the four. Salt is short and stubby orange-colored rogue. Both Vinegar and Mustard are large, brawny, muscle men.

Frieza was destroyed by Goku and his friends and now that he's back to life he wants revenge! This time Frieza has a powerful partner- his father, King Cold. King Cold gave Frieza a new cybernetic body that made him stronger. Frieza didn't give up his dreams of attaining eternal life and conquering the universe, and he has come to Earth to make his dreams a reality!

King Cold is a massive monster with evil ambitions. He is Frieza's father, and is similar to Frieza in many ways. His brutal personality, desire to destroy the world and even his glacial physical appearance and uniform make the family resemblance to Frieza obvious. King Cold "resurrected" Frieza following the destruction of Namek, when all believed Frieza to have been destroyed. Now, King Cold travels to Earth to help his son on his quest for revenge!

The evil scientific genius Dr. Gero has created his most destructive inventions ever. Androids 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 are out to destroy the Earth. These androids have amazing strength and enjoy devastation. The Androids are stored in Dr. Gero's hidden mountain laboratory. They are highly intelligent and deadly, and programmed to destroy Goku.

16 is an experimental model. He is a big, muscled red haired brute who's been programmed to be a perfect killing machine. He doesn't say much at all; he is simply super strong.

17 and 18 are teenage androids. They are the ones responsible for the future destruction of the Earth and Trunks has to come from the future to stop them. 17 is a black-haired boy and 18 is a cute blonde girl.

19 is an overweight doll-like android with a funny outfit. He is very passionate about killing our heroes and uses all the weapons he can.

Android 20 is Dr. Gero himself as an android. He is the most vicious android of all and won't give up fighting. This android also knows how to activate the others.

Tidbits

About The Transfer

This DVD box originally included a booklet. On the back side, a summary of Funimation's questionable methods of remastering the footage is provided. This summary is included below exactly as it was written. Funimation no longer includes the booklets with new printings.

To accomplish the Dragon Ball Z remaster process, FUNimation worked with Video Post & Transfer, a Dallas-based post-production house. The original Japanese film masters were transferred via an industry-standard Spirit DataCine, passing through a Digital Vision DVNR1000 to remove film grain, and then receiving a further round of processing using a Teranex VC600 video computer. These digital noise-reduction units each helped to remove thousands of instances of dirt, scratches, and debris.

The cleaned footage signal was then run through a da Vinci 2K Plus color system to ensure that the colors were true to the original film prints. The da Vinci 2K Plus is an industry standard system used for color correction in feature films and broadcast, and was primarily used in this instance to set the levels of the whites and blacks in the film in order to present the colors in a manner faithful to the original prints.

The final media for transfer was Sony's HDCAM, a fully high-definition digital tape. The film was laid to tape at 1080p HD at 24 frames per second. The frame-rate is important to note, as it allowed the film, which was originally created at 24 frames per second, to be transferred to tape frame by frame. This frame-rate prevented any unnecessary data from being added to the final video, and preserves the film masters at the highest quality possible.
