"Dragon Ball Z Season Five" is Funimation's fifth "season"-based DVD box set (of nine total), presenting Dragon Ball Z television episodes 140-165 in a standard-definition (480p), cropped, widescreen, "digitally remastered" format, originally released 27 May 2008 in North America. These "season" sets are both colloquially known and internally at Funimation referred to as the "Orange Bricks."[1]

General Overview

Each orange brick features episodes of Dragon Ball Z with branching video tracks depending on the language selected:

  • With English voices selected: an altered English-only episode title card is displayed; openings are creditless; each episode's ending has English reversion credits unique to each episode's production.
  • With Japanese voices selected: the original Japanese episode title card is displayed; openings are creditless; each episode's ending has credits that are all actually those ripped from the first episode).

The opening theme uses its second and third animation versions (of four total), while the ending theme uses its first animation version (of two total). Funimation-specific credits are featured on the English video track's ending animation. All eyecatches are presented in their correct location mid-episode. No "next episode previews" are provided. The English audio (with original soundtrack) is selected by default.

Though the series is historically divided into "story arcs" in Japan, this release marks Funimation's first branding of arbitrary "seasons" for a home video release, the delineations of which do not correspond to their own actual broadcast seasons from either syndication or cable broadcasts.

The "U.S. Broadcast Audio" uses the Faulconer Productions score and reverts the dub track to the 1999 Broadcast version (featured on the first run of home releases in North America). There are small differences between this version and FUNimation's original broadcast audio; most notably the removal of some added sound effects.

Booklet

Original DVD set booklet (PDF)

In 2011, Funimation discontinued the inclusion of printed booklets within their Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball GT DVD season sets; PDFs were subsequently made available on official Funimation websites.[2]

Character Profiles

The booklet's profiles are included below exactly as they were written. The profiles were originally accompanied by character art.

Hero Profiles

  • Bulma
    • Race: Earthling
    • Personality: Selfish, Pushy
    • Techniques: Mechanical Genius
    • Dream: Catching a good-looking boyfriend
    • First Appeared in: Episode 2
    • Japanese Voice Actor: Hiromi Tsuru
    • American Voice Actor: Tiffany Vollmer

In Dragon Ball, Bulma was a mixed up teenager with blue hair and a personality quirk that wouldn't allow her to shut up for a second. She was immature, emotional, self-centered, impatient, argumentative, boy-crazy and given to fits of hysterics. Now, she's blossomed into a mixed up woman with a new hairstyle, a new outfit and that same personality quirk. Fortunately, she's still also incredibly determined and technically talented. She will do whatever it takes to get what she wants, and she won't let anything stand in her way-not mountains, not alien invaders, not even pride.

  • Trunks
    • Race: Half-Saiyan Half-Earthling
    • Personality: Mysterious, extremely strong and determined, and also humble and kind
    • Dream: To save his world in the future from destruction by the Androids
    • First Appeared in: Episode 119
    • Japanese Voice Actor: Takeshi Kusao
    • American Voice Actor: Eric Vale

Trunks is the son of Bulma—a headstrong, technical genius—and Vegeta—one of the most powerful fighters in the Dragon Ball Z universe. He is from the future and has witnessed a threat to Earth which cannot be stopped. He has come back in time to try to save the future Earth, only to find our heroes facing their own peril.

But something has altered Earth's timeline. The Androids which appear are not the same as those of Trunk's [sic] time. They are more powerful. Trunks enters the Hyperbolic Time Chamber to train in an attempt to become even more powerful than a Super Saiyan.

Vegeta is a powerful Saiyan prince. He and his comrade Nappa are two of the last surviving Saiyans. They come to Earth to destroy all life and sell the planet. Though physically smaller than Goku, Vegeta can power up to unbelievable levels. Ambitious and determined, Vegeta wants the Dragon Balls to gain immortality, though when it serves his purposes, he fights on the side of the good guys.

Driven by his burning desire to destroy Cell and prove once and for all that he is the strongest warrior in the universe, Vegeta attacks the monster. Thanks to his training in the Hyperobolic [sic] Time Chamber, Vegeta has achieved a new level of speed and strength that not even Cell can match. But Vegeta cannot resist Cell's challenge. Instead of finishing the evil android when he has the chance, Vegeta allows Cell to reach his final form and faces a battle he will never forget.

Tien is a three-eyed man originally trained by one of Master Roshi's rivals, though he eventually becomes a Z Fighter. He beat Goku at a worldwide martial arts tournament, is able to stop a waterfall with a blast, and can crush rocks on his head. His fighting techniques include the ability to hover in the air, throw concentration bombs, blind with flashes of light, and split into two or four separate entities. Tien is excited to continue his training, and is willing to fight against the Androids despite the odds. Tien can communicate telepathically with Chiaotzu, his best friend.

Piccolo has undergone an amazing transformation since the days when he was Goku's archenemy fighting for control of the earth [sic]. He is a true defender of Earth and loyal friend to Goku, Gohan and the others. He risks his life fighting Android 17, a fight necessary only because Piccolo won't tell Android 17 where Goku is.

Piccolo is on a secret mission. He is going to merge with Kami to become stronger than before. In this combined form, Piccolo may be the only one strong enough to win the fight to save Earth.

Kami, guardian of Earth, is originally from the Planet Namek. He created the Dragon Balls on Earth. Desiring to be good and pure, Kami cast off his negative evil side which became Piccolo. Thus the two are mysteriously linked. If and when one passes away, the other will pass away also. And of course, if Kami passes away, so will the power of Earth's Dragon Balls.

  • Chi-Chi
    • Race: Earthling
    • Personality: Bossy, irritated, and believes that mental discipline will get someone (her son Gohan) further in life than muscles and phyisal strength
    • Techniques: None that she uses except maybe nagging
    • Dream: That her son finds extreme financial security through a job that won't kill him
    • First Appeared in: Episode 1
    • Japanese Voice Actor: Naoko Watanabe, Mayumi Shou [sic][c]
    • American Voice Actor: Cynthia Cranz

A beautiful girl who Goku saves when they are both young, Chi-Chi grows up to become Goku's wife and the mother of his son Gohan. Chi-Chi is a loving wife and a patient, doting mother, but she believes their son should develop his brain instead of his brawn. This sometimes brings her into direct conflict with Goku and his friends who put a high value on fighting skills. But that doesn't mean that Chi-Chi can't take care of herself. Her father, the great warrior Ox-King, who trained under Master Roshi along with Goku's grandfather, wanted to make sure to bring up a daughter who could take care of herself. So he molded her into a formidable fighter who can defend her loved ones against the forces of darkness.

The fate of the world once again rests on the shoulders of its greatest champion. This time, Goku must win over an even more powerful enemy than Frieza. He must save Earth from the Androids - perfect fighting machines whose sole mission is to destroy Goku. During the battle with Android 19, Goku succumbs to the predicted heart virus. And though the antidote that Trunks brought from the future eventually restores Goku to health, the virus proves costly in more ways than one. With Goku out of the action, a lurking evil has been given the opportunity to rise from the shadows. The Earth now faces a threat even greater than the Androids: Cell, the ultimate creation of Dr. Gero. To save the Earth from this menace, Goku quickly realizes that his Super Saiyan powers may not be enough...

As a young boy, Krillin studied martial arts with Goku under Master Roshi. Originally, he and Goku were fierce rivals, but now they are best friends. A short, bald warrior, loyal Krillin provides comic relief in tense situations as he tries to keep up with Goku and some of the other more powerful warriors. A good fighter on his own accord, he's always there to help Goku. He can and has saved his friend's life more than once. Goku constantly encourages Krillin to have confidence as he learns to be a remarkable fighter.

Named after his adoptive grandfather, Gohan is Goku and Chi-Chi's eldest son. He is idealistic, good, and pure like his father. When Goku departs to the next dimension, Piccolo trains Gohan for the upcoming arrival of the Saiyans. Although initially a wimp, Gohan's training in the wilderness and subsequent fighting make him both brave and loyal. His tremendous power is accounted for by the incredible mix between earthling and Saiyan which produces an even stronger being than either human or Saiyan alone.

Since the battle on Planet Namek, Gohan's abilities have increased by leaps and bounds. Thanks to his training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Gohan has become a Super Saiyan, his potential powers surpassing even Goku's. Unlikely as it seems, Gohan may be the Earth's only hope against Cell.

Enemy Profiles

The most dangerous of all Dr. Gero's creations, Cell was created as a genetic experiment. He comes complete with a self-destruct feature, a scorpion-like tail that opens up to absorb the energy of his opponents, and instructions to wreak revenge on the Androids which caused Dr. Gero's downfall. Cell contains the DNA of the mightiest warriors of the universe including Goku, Piccolo and Vegeta. Possessing the DNA of these great warriors, Cell is able to fight with their attacks. With these great forces combined, Cell is an almost invincible being. He is in an imperfect insect-like stage that will become complete only after he absorbs Androids 17 and 18. One of his greatest advantages is being able to regenerate at any given time from even the smallest component of himself. He gains power by draining the energy of his enemies using his scorpion-like tail.

Having absorbed Androids 17 and 18, Cell has at last become complete. In his "perfect" form, Cell's formerly insect-like appearance gives way to a prouder, almost regal stature. This form is fitting, for with the powers of the absorbed androids added to his already formidable skills, Cell has indeed become the most powerful fighter in the universe.

For the first demonstration of his awesome new powers, Perfect Cell takes on the father-son duo of Vegeta and Trunks. Despite their enhanced Ascended Saiyan abilities, Trunks and Vegeta prove easy prey, and Cell is able to deflect even their strongest attacks with a minimum [sic] of effort.

Having achieved his ultimate purpose, there is nothing to stop Perfect Cell from destroying the Earth. But first, Cell wishes to find a suitable challenge to test his the [sic] limits of his new powers. It is for the sake of pride alone that Cell seeks a battle with the strongest fighter the Earth has to offer... and it is the pride which may prove to be his only weakness.

After turning on their creator, Dr. Gero, the Androids set out into the world on their mission to find and destroy Goku. With the emergence of Cell, however, the hunters have become the hunted, and the Androids have been forced to flee for their lives in the face of Cell's relentless pursuit.

As formidable as the Androids may be, the threat Cell poses to the world is infinitely greater. Thus, rather than fighting against them, to prevent Cell from absorbing Androids 17 and 18 and achieving his Perfect form, the Z-Fighters now have no choice but to protect them.

Recognizing the seriousness of the threat, even the peace-loving Android 16 joins the fight. In order to protect the Earth from certain destruction, Android 16 attacks Cell in an effort to buy his fellow Androids a chance to escape. He is the most powerful of the Androids by far, but in the monstrous Cell he may have met his match.

Tidbits

About The Transfer

This DVD box originally included a booklet. On the back side, a summary of Funimation's questionable methods of remastering the footage is provided. This summary is included below exactly as it was written. Funimation no longer includes the booklets with new printings.

To accomplish the Dragon Ball Z remaster process, FUNimation worked with Video Post & Transfer, a Dallas-based post-production house. The original Japanese film masters were transferred via an industry-standard Spirit DataCine, passing through a Digital Vision DVNR1000 to remove film grain, and then receiving a further round of processing using a Teranex VC600 video computer. These digital noise-reduction units each helped to remove thousands of instances of dirt, scratches, and debris.

The cleaned footage signal was then run through a da Vinci 2K Plus color system to ensure that the colors were true to the original film prints. The da Vinci 2K Plus is an industry standard system used for color correction in feature films and broadcast, and was primarily used in this instance to set the levels of the whites and blacks in the film in order to present the colors in a manner faithful to the original prints.

The final media for transfer was Sony's HDCAM, a fully high-definition digital tape. The film was laid to tape at 1080p HD at 24 frames per second. The frame-rate is important to note, as it allowed the film, which was originally created at 24 frames per second, to be transferred to tape frame by frame. This frame-rate prevented any unnecessary data from being added to the final video, and preserves the film masters at the highest quality possible.
