Monster Island is a wildlife preserve inside a royal nature park.[a] The island is guarded by a lone Ranger, No. 17, who lives with his zoologist wife and their family on another island in the park.[3]
The island is home to many endangered animals including the Minotaur, hunted for its valuable horns.[b] No. 17 guards the island from poachers.
Name
Monster Island (モンスター島 Monsutā-tō) has only been named as such in Toyotarō's Dragon Ball Super manga, but Akira Toriyama's design for No. 17 includes the letters MIR on his shirt and an armband that reads RANGER. Assuming that the letters on his shirt refer to the location, and the armband signifies his job, "MIR" probably stands for something like "Monster Island Reserve"; however this has not been stated by any official source. Trunks and Goten wear these same uniforms, shirt and armband, when they fill in for No. 17 as Rangers. It is not clear whether MIR refers to Monster Island specifically or the larger nature park.
Toyotarō uses the English word "monster", but the Japanese suffix for islands (島 -tō). When 島 is used as a standalone noun, it is pronounced shima.
Production
No. 17's new occupation as a park ranger was first mentioned a Q&A session with Akira Toriyama in Dragon Ball Full Color: Artificial Humans & Cell Arc Volume 6, published on 02 May 2014. This Q&A contains certain details about Monster Island that were never revealed in Dragon Ball Super, anime or manga.[3]
Where'd Artificial Human No. 17 go after the Cell arc, and what did he do?
He works in the wildlife preserve area of a gigantic royal nature park, as an outstanding guard who doesn't hold back against poachers.
It's an ideal job for No. 17, who loves to be on his own and isn't big on cooperating with others; since he's so good at his job, he takes in a high salary. He's married to a zoologist; they have one child and two adopted children, and live happily in an isolated house inside the nature park.

In Super, No. 17 clarifies that his wife and children do not live on Monster Island;[4] in the manga, No. 17 points Goku to the nearby island where they live.[5]
