The homeland of the Namekians. Under the Earth coordinate system, it is located in Direction SU83, Point 9045YX. Long ago, in Age 261, this planet was devastated by a weather anomaly, and nearly all of the Namekians were killed. Previously it had been a beautiful planet with green skies and dark green seas, where a tall plant called the Ajissa grew thickly. It was in the process of being restored to that beautiful state by the Eldest. Namek was destroyed by Freeza during his battle with Son Goku.

General Overview

Namek has been an inhabited planet for more than 75 million years. In that distant past, the Dragon Clan first created the dragon balls, magical artifacts that could grant any wish. The East Kaioshin of that time ensured that only Namekians would have that power as he trusted only them to use it responsibly[2]. Approximately 500 years before the events of the series, Namek suffered a weather anomaly which nearly wiped out the planet. Katatz, a member of the Dragon Clan, sent his child out into space to avoid the disaster, crash landing on Earth[3]. (In the movie continuity, Slugg also escapes the planet before its destruction.) Only a single Namekian survived the disaster, now known as the Eldest. He repopulated the planet asexually, giving birth to at least 108 children in the next five centuries. This elder was also able to recreate a set of Namek dragon balls which summoned the dragon Porunga[4]. Of his children, approximately 95 were Dragon Clan with the remainder being Warrior-type Namekians[5].

In Age 762. Namek was visted by a series of aliens who had discovered the power of the dragon balls: first Freeza and his men, then Vegeta, and finally Son Gohan, Kuririn, and Son Goku. Freeza takes a scorched-earth tactic and destroys villages looking for the dragon balls. After our heroes arrive, a three-way struggle ensued for control of the balls, resulting in Piccolo's arrival to the scene. Before the third wish could be granted, the Eldest passed away due to stress from the ongoing invasion. In the ensuing battle between Goku and Freeza, the latter launched a ki attack into the planet's core, causing it to rapidly decay and collapse. Prior to its destruction, the Earth and Namek balls were used in sequence (with the Earth ones restoring the Namek ones to power for the final wish), reviving everyone killed by Freeza and transporting them to Earth before the planet exploded. Namek was destroyed on December 24, Age 762[6]

A Namek solar year lasts approximately 130 Earth days, although the planet itself is bathed in eternal sunlight due to its three suns[7].
