The untitled first quarterly chapter of Dragon Ball SD by Naho Ooishi is the series' debut chapter. The chapter, based on the original story by Akira Toriyama, was published 03 December 2010 within the Winter 2011 launch issue of Saikyō Jump, a manga anthology specializing in tie-ins to other Shueisha properties. This is the first of four quarterly "prototype"-esque SD chapters preceding the long-running reboot of the series, which restarted the following year alongside the magazine's own relaunch as a monthly (later bimonthly) publication. Dragon Ball SD was an anchor series for the launch of the magazine with all pages appearing in full color. The original four quarterly chapters have never been reprinted or collected following their original publication.
Synopsis
After his grandfather's death, a young Son Goku follows his grandfather's instructions to train under the Turtle Hermit. At Kame House, Goku is introduced to fellow pupil Kuririn before being sent on his first training exercise. To gain stamina, Goku and Kuririn must survive alone in the jungle for thirty days.
Summary
On Mount Paozu, a young Son Goku is seen carrying his futon and some belongings, including the Nyoi-Bō, following his now-deceased grandpa's instructions to train with the Turtle Hermit. Goku calls for Kinto'un and asks the cloud to take him to the Turtle Hermit's place.
Arriving at Kame House, Goku at first believes that Turtle is the master that he is looking for and that "grandpa" is a student. The sage quickly corrects him and asks why he is visiting. Goku presents a letter from his grandfather and the Hermit agrees to train him, but reveals that he has another new student as well, named Kuririn. They agree to start their training immediately, focusing first on stamina. The Hermit takes them to clifftop on a nearby volcanic island. With a shove, he knocks both students off the cliff, informing them on their way down that their first trial will be to survive on their own in the wilderness for thirty days. Unfortunately, just as their training begins, the volcano begins to erupt! As it will interfere with his students' training, the Turtle Hermit fires a Kamehameha at the volcano and destroys it, stopping the eruption. Goku shouts from the bottom of the cliff that he wants to learn that technique, too! The sage responds that if they train under him, they both might be able to fire them some day.
Later that night, Goku and Kuririn have a fire going. Kuririn is having difficulty adapting to life in the wilderness, but Goku explains that he is used to roughing it. He offers Kuririn bugs and a fish to cook. Some time later, Kuririn happily munches on an apple while remarking that he is getting used to the outdoor life. Unfortunately, a flying dinosaur mistakes his bald head for an egg and lifts the boy in the air. Kuririn calls out for Goku to help, but he has left Kinto'un at Kame House. He decides that the only way to save his friend is to do the move that he saw the Turtle Hermit use. Mimicking the sage's movements, he successfully launches a Kamehameha at the pterodactyl and kills it, sending Kuririn tumbling to the ground. Fortunately, Kuririn has a hard head and is unscathed. He thanks Goku for saving him. Watching over both of them from the nearby cliff, the Turtle Hermit is impressed that Goku could learn his technique so quickly. As the comic closes, Goku drags off the pterodactyl to see if he is delicious.

Notes
- Within the issue of Saikyō Jump, this chapter appears within a pamphlet covering pages ## through ##. This pamphlet is bound on the outward-facing spine, forcing the reader to cut it open to read the material inside.
- This chapter roughly summarizes the original manga chapters 24 through 29. Goku arrives for training, meets Kuririn, and the pair are taken to another island for their first adventure. Unlike in the original manga, they are not challenged to find a girl for the Turtle Hermit and Kuririn is already a pupil when Goku arrives. The challenge to find a stone in the jungle is replaced by a task to live there for a month.
- Goku already has Kinto'un at the start of his adventure. This Kinto'un is able to follow instructions such as locating the Turtle Hermit's house.
- The Turtle Hermit's destruction of the volcano with a Kamehameha is a clear reference to a similar scenario in the original series where the hermit puts out the fire on Mount Frypan.
Availability

This first quarterly chapter of Dragon Ball SD has never been reprinted or collected in print form following its original publication. The chapter was, however, included as a video file within the second quarterly issue of Saikyō Jump's "Strongest Heroes Assemble" bonus pack-in DVD. Alongside commercials for various Shueisha-related properties, the Dragon Ball SD and other Saikyō Jump comics are presented with unobtrusive background music and pan across the various panels and pages, ending each page with a full zoom out to show the entire page on-screen at once; the video for the first Dragon Ball SD chapter runs roughly 5:49 in length.
