Amembo Island, in the world of Dragon Ball by Akira Toriyama, is a southern island where Doctor Gero and No. 19 first appeared to terrorize the world as predicted by Future Trunks. The island is named only in the anime adaptation; in Daizenshuu 7 and other guide books it is referred to only as "Island Where No. 19 and No. 20 Appeared" (19号20号の現れた島).
General Overview
Amembo Island is an island nine kilometers southwest of South City. It is one of a group of islands which also includes Papaya Island, where the Tenka'ichi Budōkai is held. The island features one large town and a mountain towering over it. Unlike Papaya which features architecture and temples resembling that of Indonesia, Amembo's architecture and design more closely resembles that of the other "modern" cities in the series such as Bulma's West City.
On May 12, Age 767, Amembo Island is attacked by Doctor Gero and Artificial Human No. 20, marking their first public appearance in the world. No motive is given for the attack in the series, but Doctor Gero appears to have wanted both to absorb ki energy[note 2] as well as to draw out Son Goku. Precisely why that island was selected rather than the larger city nearby is not given. During this battle, Doctor Gero destroyed much of the city while attempting to make it "uninhabited" for Son Goku.[1]
At the conclusion of the Cell Games, two weeks later, everyone who had been killed by Cell were revived by the dragon balls. Unfortunately, the victims of Gero and No. 19 were not included in this wish and were not revived.[2] No further mention is made of Amembo in the series.
Alternate Timelines
In Future Trunk's Timeline, Amembo Island was also attacked by the Artificial Humans on May 12, Age 767. The details of this attack are not clear, but Trunks implies that the island was attacked by his versions of No. 17 and No. 18.[3] As Trunks learned of these events secondhand from his mother, she may have been mistaken as to which Artificial Humans attacked on that date. It is presumed that variations of these events also occurred on Amembo Island in Cell's Timeline and the alternate history presented in Dragon Ball Z Movie 7.
Name
Amembo Island is not named in the manga. The name is based on "amembo" (アメンボ), the Japanese name for the water strider insect. The name only appeared in filler material included in Dragon Ball Z Episode 127, scripted by Katsuyuki Sumisawa.
The Viz translation of Dragon Ball Chapter 338 implies that the urban area on Amembo Island is called "South City"; this description is not in the original Japanese text. Trunks describes the island as 9 km southwest of South City, therefore the urban area on the island itself cannot be South City. However, given the proximity-- approximately the distance from Manhattan to the Bronx in real life-- Viz may have associated the settlement on Amembo Island as a suburb.[4] No separate name is provided for the town in either the manga or anime.

Notes
- ↑ While the island appears in both the manga and anime, it is only named in the anime adaptation.
- ↑ Doctor Gero and No. 20 are already rampaging before they know that Son Goku is there. When they discover Yamcha, Gero remarks that he will be a good source of energy. This technique of attacking and absorbing energy from towns will later be adopted by Cell.
