"A Final, Solitary Battle - The Father of Z-Warrior Kakarrot, Who Challenged Freeza" is the first TV Special of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Z. The TV Special first aired in Japan on Fuji TV on 17 October 1990, receiving a ratings share of 23.6%. The episode was written by Takao Koyama and Katsuyuki Sumisawa and directed by Mitsuo Hashimoto.

Synopsis

The Saiyan Bardock and his companions are conquering the planet Kanassa for their overlord, Freeza. An ambush by a survivor of their attack renders Bardock unconscious, and leaves him with the ability to see the future. This power proves to be more of a curse than a blessing, as Bardock is now privy to the details of his own death, and the destruction of his world. As Bardock strives in a doomed effort to ensure that the events seen in his visions do not come to pass, his son, Kakarrot, is sent on a mission to eradicate all life on a planet called Earth.

Summary

On the day of his birth, the son of the Saiyan warrior, Bardock, is analyzed by a group of physicians on planet Vegeta. At the same time, a band of lower class Saiyans are laying waste to a city in their Oozaru forms. As the sun rises, these Saiyans, led by Bardock, relish in their conquest of the planet.

The group discusses how the people of the planet Kanassa are said to possess psychic abilities that allow them to see the future. Suddenly, a sole survivor springs a surprise attack on the band of Saiyans. The attack is repelled by the Saiyans, but the assailant, with his dying words, curses Bardock with the ability to see visions of the future. Now Bardock will have to suffer visions of the destruction of his planet, just as the victims of his attack did.

Bardock is left unconscious in a healing tank back on Vegeta, and the rest of his crew depart for a mission to the planet Meat, following orders directly from Freeza himself. As Bardock heals, he starts experiencing vivid hallucinations. He sees images of Kakarrot growing up on a foreign planet and becoming stronger through numerous battles with powerful opponents. However, he also suffers visions of planet Vegeta exploding.

As Bardock awaits, he learns of the orders given to his team, and rushes to join them, briefly stopping to check on his son. Arriving on Meat, Bardock finds his teammates dead on a barren battlefield. His closest friend, Toma, with his dying breath that their mission was a setup to eliminate any powerful Saiyans who might potentially pose a threat to Freeza's reign.

While taking in this information, Bardock is attacked by the soldiers who killed his crew: the elite team of Dodoria, one of Freeza's right-hand men. Fighting them four-on-one, he is able to use his quick thinking to survive and take out his opponents. Dodoria himself enters the fray, however, and quickly dispatches the lone Saiyan. Thinking Bardock dead, Dodoria leaves to rejoin Freeza.

Bardock is still alive, however, and manages to get to his ship and set it to take him back to Vegeta. Along the way, he passes another space pod, which he senses contains Kakarrot. Bardock lands on the planet, and, in a panic, tries to spread the word of Freeza's betrayal. No one believes him, however, and he is mocked for even suggesting that Freeza would turn on the Saiyans. With no other options, Bardock decides to attempt to stop Freeza and his men alone.

After seeing a vision of his son as an adult confronting Freeza, Bardock flies into space to confront Freeza. He is assaulted by dozens of Freeza's men, and while he manages to fight them off, they do slow him down. Freeza himself then emerges from the top of his ship, ready to finally put an end to the Saiyan world. Bardock, seeing his true foe, launches his strongest opponent in a last-ditch effort to save his planet.

This effort is in vain, however, as Freeza's rapidly growing attack is unfazed by Bardock's blast. Freeza unleashes his Death Ball, which consumes both Bardock and his own soldiers. As Bardock succumbs to the attack, he experiences one final vision: his son will one day face Freeza, and will triumph over the tyrant. Bardock dies with a smile on his face as the planet Vegeta is destroyed.

Blissfully unaware of all that has happened, Bardock's son, Kakarrot, is discovered in a forest by Son Gohan, a great martial artist. Gohan adopts the baby to raise as his own grandson, giving him the name "Son Goku."
