Planet Calvo is the third stop on the Grand Tour. It first appears in Dragon Ball GT Episode 7 which debuted on Fuji TV on 20 March 1996 in Japan.
Overview
Goku, Trunks, and Pan travel to Planet Calvo after Giru identifies it as the location of the second Ultimate Dragon Ball. They find the Six-Star Ball in a village near the base of Mount Calvo, an active volcano. The Dragon Ball is woven into Leine's hair, but Leine has a problem: her father, the village headman, has promised to give her to the monster Zunama as a bride in order to prevent him from carrying out his threats against the village. Zunama claims that he can cause earthquakes just by wiggling his whiskers, and he even claims that he can cause the volcano to erupt. To foils these plans, they dress Trunks up as Leine and give him a jug of saké. When Zunama carries him off, the others sneak into Zunama's lair inside the volcano, planning to cut off Zunama's whiskers as soon as he is drunk. Doma manages to snap one whisker, but then it is revealed that Zunama does not actually have the power to cause earthquakes; he can only predict them, and the volcano is about to erupt right now! After Goku destroys the volcano, the villagers allow Zunama to live among them since he seems to regret his actions. But as soon as the Dragon Ball is handed over to the Earth gang, it is stolen by Bon Para who had been disguised as one of the villagers. Trunks fires up the spaceship and they quickly leave Planet Calvo in pursuit of Bon Para!
Name
Planet Calvo was never named in the anime; it was first named in supplementary material.[1] (Mount Calvo is named in the anime, but not in the Funimation English dub.) The planet's name (ケルボ Kerubo) is confirmed to be derived from "volcano" (ボルケーノ borukeeno).[2] The only English localization of the name comes from Dragon Ball GT: Transformation, where the planet is called "Gelbo".
Residents
Zunama (ズーナマー)
Zuanama is an amphibious creature who lives inside Mount Calvo and terrorizes the residents of a nearby village by threatening to cause earthquakes. His name is an anagram (with two vowel elongations) of namazu (鯰 ナマズ), the Japanese word for "catfish". His sentences are generally punctuated by mazu, often following the male-usage sentence-ending particle na. |
Village Headman (村長)
The headman of the village at the foot of Mount Calvo. To protect his village, he offers his daughter Leine to Zunama for a bride. |
Leine (レーヌ)
Leine is already engaged to be married to Doma, but her father promises her to Zunama instead. Leine's name is likely derived from Madeleine (マドレーヌ madorēnu), a traditional sponge cake from Lorraine, France. Her name comes from the second part of the word. |
Doma (ドマ)
Doma accompanies Goku, Trunks, and Pan on their quest to neutralize Zunama and prevent the theft of his intended bride. His task is to cut off Zunama's whiskers, and he carries a giant pair of scissors sheathed at his back like a sword. Doma's name is likely an anagram of the first two syllables of Madeleine (マドレーヌ madorēnu), a paired pun with his fiancée Leine. |
Lady (オバサン)
This lady is Goku's nemesis in the kitchen. When he tries to steal food, she smacks him on the hand with a daikon radish. Some time later, he gets away with a plate of food and she chases after him to take it away from him, but still later, he is seen eating from that same plate of food. |
Summary of Events

Goku, Trunks, and Pan are searching for the second of the Ultimate Dragon Balls, which Giru has located on Planet Calvo. As they approach the planet, Giru tells them the Dragon Ball is ahead at 1-0-2-0-0. They land in a grassy field and stretch, then proceed on foot to the location of the Dragon Ball. Eventually they arrive at a rustic village with thatch-roofed huts, but there are no people in sight. Goku complains that he is hungry, and Pan reminds him that he just ate. Giru tells them that the Dragon Ball is north at 2-3-0.
They enter the village and eventually find a group of people gathered around one hut. Pushing through the crowd, Pan and Goku find a woman seated at a table inside the hut with a few men standing around her. Still behind the crowd, Trunks asks a nearby man what is going on. The crowd turns around to look at them (Goku and Pan have rejoined him). The man explains that it is Zunama. Giru points toward the hut, telling everyone that the Dragon Ball is inside. It is tied at the end of the seated woman's hair. The Earth trio excitedly pushes through the crowd, and Goku counts the stars; it is the Six-Star Ball! One of the men standing nearby asks what is wrong with them, bursting into someone's home like this. Trunks explains that they traveled from a faraway planet called Earth to look for this Dragon Ball. The man angrily tells them that they do not have time for this right now, whatever their situation is; Zunama might show up at any minute. Leine, the seated woman, tells Doma, the man, that it will not help to yell at these people.

Goku asks them who or what is this Zunama they keep talking about; Pan and Trunks want to know too. The villagers sit them down with some food, and the Village Headman tells them that Zunama is a terrible monster who can cause earthquakes by wiggling his whiskers. He terrorizes their village and makes selfish demands which continue to escalate. His last demand was the most outrageous. Giru then interrupts him to tell everyone that danger is approaching. The Earth trio watches through a window as Zunama approaches the hut, asking if they have decided on a bride for him. Trunks realizes that this must have been his latest, most outrageous demand, and the Headman confirms; his daughter Leine has been chosen as the bride. Trunks angrily tells him that this is like human sacrifice, and a very uncivilized thing to do in this day and age.
Zunama, however, is ecstatic, and threatens to wiggle his whiskers and cause an earthquake if they do not get on with it. He wiggles them, and the ground begins shaking. He threatens to next make the Mount Calvo erupt and destroy the whole village, but Leine rushes out, telling him to wait. Zunama asks if she is his bride, and what is her name? She tells him, and asks him to please stop the earthquake. Leine cries as Zunama inspects her; Doma calls out for her and tries to rush to her side, but his friends restrain him. Pan tells Trunks that they have to do something. Zunama is very happy with his bride, however, and says he will return for her on the morrow. He does not like her clothes, though, and tells her to wear a pretty bridal dress. He departs, and Leine faints.

Goku watches as the village women tearfully prepare a feast; crouching, he approaches to steal some food, and a lady smacks his hand with a radish. They are making this food for Leine; he cannot snack on it. Pan and Trunks watch over Leine, who is laid up in bed, and Pan promises they will take Zunama down. The villagers are shocked, but Pan tells them that in return, they only need to give them the Dragon Ball. The Headman is skeptical, but Pan tells him that Goku is the strongest person on Planet Earth, while Trunks is second, and she is third. Trunks reminds her about Gohan, Vegeta, and Piccolo, but Pan shushes him, telling him that this situation calls for exaggeration. Pan begs the Headman to give them a chance; they do not want Leine to have to marry Zunama, after all. Leine is grateful for their offer, and Doma declares that he will go with them; he cannot allow Leine to bear the brunt of this misfortune. Pan and Trunks are happy to hear his offer, but Trunks advises him to let them handle it. Meanwhile, Goku approaches with a plate of food, and lets everyone know he is happy for the chance to fight a strong guy, but the lady from the kitchen takes the plate from him, chastising him for ignoring what she told him before. Anyway, Goku wants to do his best for Leine, and the Headman grants them permission to try.

Pan tells Leine that they need something from her right away; a wedding dress! Pan is delighted at the pretty wedding dresses of this planet; Leine tells her that she was supposed to wear it for...she turns around to look at Doma. Pan assures her she will be able to wear it, and Doma thanks her. Goku asks Pan what she intends to do with the dress; it turns out that she wants to put Goku in it! Goku fights her, so she tells him to calm down; he is just going to be a decoy. Someone has to sneak into Zunama's place disguised as Leine, get Zunama drunk, and then snip off his whiskers. Giru tries to warn them that this will be dangerous; Trunks just wants to know where Pan got the giant scissors. Goku thinks this is a good plan, but he does not want to wear the frilly dress. He tries it on anyway, but it is too big for him; as they ponder what to do, Trunks tries to sneak out of the room, but he does not quite make it. Pan puts him in the dress despite his protests. Goku thinks it is funny; he tells Trunks that he looks good in the dress, and Pan says it is just the right size. All they need to do is fix him up with some makeup, give him a wig, and put on the veil! Trunks balks, but Pan reminds him that this is for Leine and the others. Leine and Pan work on Trunks's face while Goku works on the plate of food that had been taken from earlier.

All dressed up, Trunks waits for Zunama; he is just grateful that his parents are not here to witness this. Leine thanks him for going through this for her, and he nervously insists that it is nothing. Doma enters with the giant scissors sheathed on his back, and tells Leine he is going to be off. She begs him to be careful. Goku's nemesis from the kitchen approaches Pan with a jug of her mother-in-law's strongest saké. Goku asks if it is yummy, and the woman chastises him; children should not ask about such things. He tries to tell her that he is an adult. Pan tells Trunks he has to put on a good act for Zunama, warning him not to allow his identity to be discovered. He promises to try.
Doma warns everyone that Zunama is coming. Indeed, he approaches singing Wagner's bridal chorus. Pan tells everyone to commence the "Operation Get Zunama Drunk and Snip His Whiskers!" He calls out to Leine-chan; Pan tells Trunks to get going, so he runs out, tripping over the dress. Zunama gets impatient, so Trunks rights his clothes and announces himself. Zunama notes that his voice is different than it was yesterday; Pan admonishes him from the bushes, telling him to try to sound more like a woman. Trunks tells Zunama that he started coming down with a cold last night. Zunama tells him to come closer so he can get a closer look at her cute face, and Trunks panics.[3]

Zunama continues to insist that Leine seems different from yesterday, while Trunks tries to hide his face with a bouquet of flowers, wondering what to do. Pan sneaks up behind him, hiding behind a painted wooden screen, to encourage him to put more effort into the act. Trunks tells Zunama in falsetto that Leine is bashful without the flowers to cover her face, and Pan falls over. Doma and Goku rush out to retrieve her, with Giru on Goku's back. Back on the sidelines, Doma complains that Leine is not that kind of undignified girl. Pan thinks it's all over now, but Goku wonders if Zunama is really all that strong. He tells Pan they should ditch the plan and just go at him, but Pan reminds him that he might make the volcano erupt.
Meanwhile, Zunama has decided that Trunks is adorable. He grabs his bride in one hand to take her home while Trunks cringes in horror. Zunama takes off, singing Wagner again as he heads back toward the volcano. Pan tells the others it is time to go. Zunama begins to stroke Trunks's face with his whisker, and Trunks instinctively slaps it away. Zunama grows angry, threatening to make the volcano erupt for touching his precious whisker. Trunks insists that it was just a mosquito on his whisker, so Zunama thanks him for his kindness, turning off the path to cut into the forest. Trunks asks where they are going, and Zunama tells him it is a shortcut. They approach a pond, and Zunama tells Trunks to hold his breath, diving into the pond and swimming underground.

Pan and the others creep through the forest disguised with vegetation. They have lost sight of Zunama, and Doma worries what will happen to Trunks if they do not find them soon. Goku assures Doma that Trunks can take care of himself. Finally, Zunama and Trunks emerge in a cave with several other pools. Back in the forest, Goku sniffs around a small pool of water, and Pan thinks it is strange that there are puddles when there has been no rain. Then Doma calls out to them; he has found one of Leine's flowers in another pool. Goku takes off his clothes, preparing to dive; Pan sees him and screams, throws his clothes at him, accuses him of being a dirty old man, and threatens to tell Chi-Chi on him. Giru runs around and warns Pan of danger, and Pan tells him to shut up, kicking him away. Goku explains that he was just going to take a look, while Pan blushes and looks in another direction, and he reminds her that they took baths together when she was a baby. This is news to Pan, who accuses him of lying, but Goku insists that he is not. She points out that she is older now and he should be more careful. Muttering about what a hassle it is, Goku jumps into the pond. Doma asks Pan if Goku is really her grandfather, and when she confirms, he says that Earth must be a really strange planet. Goku emerges from the pond with Giru on his head and tells Doma and Pan that there is a cave down there, and that must be where Trunks went.

In Zunama's cave, Zunama puts on a bowtie and tells Leine that she can change now too. Trunks backs away, not knowing what to do, and his veiled hat gets caught on an anchor. Leaving it behind unknowingly, Trunks takes a breather under a stone archway. Looking down, he sees magma and realizes that they are inside Mount Calvo. He wipes the sweat off his face and inadvertently smears his lipstick. Zunama tells Trunks that he has a dress ready for him, a pink evening dress. Trunks stands back up and answers in a falsetto voice, but his wig comes off without him realizing it. Zunama looks at the wig on the ground, while Trunks comes to take the dress. Zunama observes that Trunks is not Leine after all, and Trunks feels his head, realizing he is busted. He prepares to fight, thinking he has no choice, but Zunama decides that he is still cute, so he will forgive him. He likes short hair too! Zunama asks his name, and he starts to say "Trunks", but then changes it to "Tolerance". Zunama thinks that is a nice name, and Trunks is incredulous.

Goku and the others swim through the cave while Zunama sits "Tolerance" down for a feast, telling her not to be shy, and eat. Trunks smiles, realizing this is his chance. He pulls out the jug of saké, telling Zunama they should have a toast before eating to celebrate their marriage. Zunama declines; he cannot drink that much saké, but he encourages Tolerance to have as much as she likes. Trunks insists he should have just a little bit, since it is a special occasion, but Zunama insists he does not want any. Trunks tries to insist again, and Zunama gets angry, telling Trunks he does not like it when people are pushy. Desperate, Trunks distracts Zunama and then soaks the food in saké. Apologizing, he tells Zunama that he thought he saw something, but it must have just been his imagination. He offers up a giant spoonful of meatballs to Zunama, who is pleased that Tolerance wants to feed him. He eats the entire spoonful, saying it tastes a little funny, but it will do. Then Trunks stuffs the entire plate in Zunama's face, suffocating him in an effort to force him to eat.
Goku and the others come up out of the pool, each in separate craters (except for Giru, who comes up with Goku). Pan looks behind her, seeing a tunnel with light at the end. Trunks finally manages to stuff all the meatballs in Zunama's head, and he appears to be getting tipsy. A flush-faced Zunama asks Tolerance what she is doing, and Trunks apologizes, conceding that might have been too much. Zunama agrees it was a lot, but it was delicious, and he feels good. Trunks is excited to see that Zunama is drunk already, and Zunama belches happily, asking for another helping. Trunks tells him that he ate it all, and Zunama begins to throw a tantrum, threatening to start an earthquake. Trunks realizes that Zunama is the type to get unruly when drunk, but just then, Pan calls out to him softly, asking him how it is going. Trunks tells them that he just got done putting the saké in the food. Then Zunama comes up behind Trunks, asking what is going on, while Pan and the others panic.
Zunama is drunk, but mildly displeased that others are trying to butt in on his alone time with Tolerance-chan. Trunks tells him that these are friends of his, but then Zunama angrily knocks him aside. As Trunks pulls himself out of the rubble, he notes that the alcohol made Zunama's power shoot up. Giru warns of danger, but Zunama laughs and tells the others to hurry up and get out. Pan tells him they cannot do that, and Goku barely saves her from the blow of Zunama's tail. Then Goku tells Zunama that he is starting to get a little excited, preparing to attack, and Zunama tells him to come at him. Then he passes out, falling over on his back.

Trunks takes off the dress, wondering how Zunama could knock his bride like that with no warning; no one with his temperament should drink saké, that's for sure. Pan reminds Doma that this is their chance. Doma approaches the snoring Zunama, telling him that he sure has caused his village to suffer. He snips one whisker, causing Pan and Goku to laugh at his funny face. Doma goes for the other whisker, and Zunama wakes up, sneezing and sending Doma flying. He sees Tolerance in normal Trunks attire and asks what is with those clothes. Trunks admits that he is a man. Zunama grows angry again, and the magma below sparks up. He threatens to cause an earthquake, but when he tries to grab his whiskers, he realizes that something is wrong. He pulls out a mirror and sees that one of his whiskers is missing. Mortified, he asks how they could do such a thing, but he is angry enough to do it with just one whisker! The ground shakes as he wiggles his whisker, and Doma hides under a table while Goku and Pan struggle to hang on to whatever is nearby. Giru hangs on to Trunks, and Trunks hangs on to nearby furniture.
Before long, the earthquake stops, but Zunama keeps on wiggling. Doma wonders why the ground has stopped shaking before Zunama stopped shaking, but Zunama asks them what they think about his earthquake, offering them one last chance to apologize. He dances and wiggles his whisker, and Trunks wonders what it all means. Pan realizes that he does not actually have the power to cause earthquakes; he can only predict them and wiggle his whiskers when they come, but since he is drunk, he has not realized that the earthquake has stopped. Doma is mortified that they have fallen for this trick for so many years.
Zunama realizes they are all staring at him, so they tell him they know his secret. He threatens to make the volcano erupt, but Trunks has had enough; he quickly elbows Zunama in the head, knocking him down, but not out. Zunama promises to make the volcano erupt right away, so Pan tells him to go for it. They know he cannot cause earthquakes. Trunks tells him to give up now; they all know his secret. Zunama cries, insisting he never intended to take it this far. Doma reminds him that he nearly bullied his fiancée away from him, but Zunama apologizes and begs for forgiveness. Pan tells him to give it up, but he tells her this is different; his entire body is quivering and a big earthquake is coming. Giru warns of danger, and then Zunama tells them that the volcano is about to erupt, too. That is why he has been raiding the village more lately; Mount Calvo's activity has been increasing lately.

The earth shakes again, and steam starts to pour out of vents. Goku looks down at the magma and realizes this is serious, telling everyone to hurry up and get out. Everyone runs, Zunama included, jumping into the pool to escape. Goku waits behind as the lava rushes towards them, firing a Kamehameha to stop the flow and propelling all of them out of the pool. Behind them, the volcano is erupting, and Pan exclaims that the village is in danger. Lava rushes down the sides of the mountain, and Goku makes up his mind; he approaches the volcano and aims yet another Kamehameha, destroying the entire mountain. Goku thinks he might have overdone it a little, but he shrugs it off, and everyone falls over.
The villagers, including Zunama, gather around the spaceship as the Earth gang prepares to depart. Leine hands over her Dragon Ball, and Pan thanks her. Leine says they should be thanking her; Doma agrees, thanking her for going to so much trouble for them. Goku asks what they are going to do with Zunama, and Leine says that they discussed it and decided he could stay in the village, since he seems to truly regret what he did. Doma adds that Zunama has agreed to warn them if an earthquake is coming.
Just then, the Dragon Ball that Pan is holding starts glowing yellow, levitating upward and away. One of the villagers grabs it, then transforms into a blue man in a red hooded outfit. A mushroom-shaped spaceship appears behind him, and he disappears with the Dragon Ball. Who can he be?![4] The Earth gang quickly boards the spaceship, departing Planet Calvo.[5]
