Doma is a fictional character in the Japanese animated series Dragon Ball GT. Doma makes his debut in episode 7, which debuted on Fuji TV on 20 March 1996, as a resident of Planet Calvo.

Biography

Doma lives in the small village at the foot of Mount Calvo, and he is engaged to be married to Leine, the daughter of the Village Headman. Then, the amphibious monster Zunama threatens to destroy the village if they do not provide him with a bride, so the Headman arranges for Leine to marry Zunama instead.

This is the situation when Goku, Trunks, Pan, and Giru arrive on Planet Calvo in search of the second of the Ultimate Dragon Balls. They enter the village and find the village gathered around Leine and Doma, and then they notice that the Dragon Ball is woven into Leine's hair. Excited, they rush her, and Doma asks what is wrong with them. Trunks explains that they traveled from a faraway planet called Earth to look for the Dragon Ball. Doma angrily tells them that they do not have time for this right now, whatever their situation is; Zunama might show up at any minute. Leine tells Doma that it will not help anything to yell at these people.

The villagers restrain Doma as Leine and Zunama talk.

Goku asks them who or what is this Zunama they keep talking about, so the Headman explains. Giru then interrupts him to tell everyone that danger is approaching. The Earth trio watches through a window as Zunama approaches the hut, asking if they have decided on a bride for him. Trunks is very angry when he realizes that the Headman has offered Leine to Zunama. Zunama, however, is ecstatic, and threatens to wiggle his whiskers and cause an earthquake if they do not get on with it. He wiggles them, and the ground begins shaking. He threatens to next make the volcano erupt and destroy the whole village, but Leine rushes out, telling him to wait. Zunama asks if she is his bride, and what is her name? She tells him, and asks him to please stop the earthquake. Leine cries as Zunama inspects her; Doma calls out for her and tries to rush to her side, but his friends restrain him. Pan tells Trunks that they have to do something. Zunama is very happy with his bride, however, and says he will return for her on the morrow. He does not like her clothes, though, and tells her to wear a pretty bridal dress. He departs, and Leine faints.

As Leine rests in bed, Pan promises that they will take care of Zunama. Leine is grateful for their offer, and Doma declares that he will go with them; he cannot allow Leine to bear the brunt of this misfortune. Pan and Trunks are happy to hear his offer, but Trunks advises him to let them handle it. Goku wants to help too, and the Headman grants them permission to try. Pan tells Leine that they need something from her first: a wedding dress! Leine has one, but she was supposed to wear it for...she turns around to look at Doma. Pan assures her she will be able to wear it, and Doma thanks her. Eventually, they put Trunks in the dress despite his protests. Then they fix him up with some makeup, give him a wig, and put on the veil.

Doma tells Leine goodbye.

All dressed up, Trunks waits for Zunama. Leine thanks him for going through this for her, and he nervously insists that it is nothing. Doma enters with the giant scissors sheathed on his back, and tells Leine he is going to be off. She begs him to be careful. The kitchen lady gives Pan a jug of her mother-in-law's strongest saké. Pan tells Trunks he has to put on a good act for Zunama, warning him not to allow his identity to be discovered. He promises to try.

Doma warns everyone that Zunama is coming. Indeed, he approaches singing Wagner's bridal chorus. Pan tells everyone to commence the "Operation Get Zunama Drunk and Snip His Whiskers!" He calls out to Leine-chan, and Trunks answers the call. Zunama notes that his voice is different than it was yesterday; Pan admonishes him from the bushes, telling him to try to sound more like a woman. Trunks tells Zunama that he started coming down with a cold last night. Zunama tells him to come closer so he can get a closer look at her cute face, and Trunks panics.[1]

Doma and Goku rescue Pan.

Zunama continues to insist that Leine seems different from yesterday, while Trunks tries to hide his face with a bouquet of flowers, wondering what to do. Pan sneaks up behind him, hiding behind a painted wooden screen, to encourage him to put more effort into the act. Trunks tells Zunama in falsetto that Leine is bashful without the flowers to cover her face, and Pan falls over. Doma and Goku rush out to retrieve her, with Giru on Goku's back. Back on the sidelines, Doma complains that Leine is not that kind of undignified girl. Pan thinks it's all over now, but Goku wonders if Zunama is really all that strong. He tells Pan they should ditch the plan and just go at him, but Pan reminds him that he might make the volcano erupt.

Meanwhile, Zunama has decided that Trunks is adorable. He grabs his bride in one hand to take her home while Trunks cringes in horror. Zunama takes off, singing Wagner again as he heads back toward the volcano. Pan tells the others it is time to go. They creep through the forest at the base of Mount Calvo, disguised with vegetation. They have lost sight of Zunama, and Doma worries what will happen to Trunks if they do not find them soon. Goku assures Doma that Trunks can take care of himself. Goku sniffs to find the trail, stopping at the edge of a small pool of water, and Pan thinks it is strange that there are puddles when there has been no rain. Then Doma calls out to them; he has found one of Leine's flowers in another pool. Goku takes off his clothes, embarrassing Pan. She blushes and looks in another direction, so he reminds her that they took baths together when she was a baby. She points out that she is older now and he should be more careful. When Goku jumps into the pond, Doma asks Pan if Goku is really her grandfather, and when she confirms, he says that Earth must be a really strange planet. Goku emerges from the pond with Giru on his head and tells Doma and Pan that there is a cave down there, and that must be where Trunks went.

Doma and the others swim through the cave, and they eventually emerge inside the volcano. Pan spots a tunnel with light at the end. They find Trunks, and Pan calls out to him softly, asking him how it is going. Trunks tells them that he just got done putting the saké in the food. Then Zunama comes up behind Trunks, asking what is going on, while Pan and the others panic. Zunama is drunk, but mildly displeased that others are trying to butt in on his alone time with Tolerance-chan. Trunks tells him that these are friends of his, but then Zunama angrily knocks him aside. The alcohol has made Zunama's power rise, so Goku challenges him, but then Zunama passes out, falling over on his back.

Doma prepares to snip Zunama's whisker.

Pan reminds Doma that this is their chance. Doma approaches the snoring Zunama, telling him that he sure has caused his village to suffer. He snips one whisker, causing Pan and Goku to laugh at his funny face. Doma goes for the other whisker, and Zunama wakes up, sneezing and sending Doma flying. He sees Trunks in his normal attire and asks what is going on, so Trunks admits that he is a man. Zunama grows angry again, and the magma below sparks up. He threatens to cause an earthquake, but when he tries to grab his whiskers, he realizes that something is wrong. He pulls out a mirror and sees that one of his whiskers is missing. Mortified, he asks how they could do such a thing, but he is angry enough to do it with just one whisker! The ground shakes as he wiggles his whisker, and Doma hides under a table while the others struggle to hang on to whatever is nearby.

Before long, the earthquake stops, but Zunama keeps on wiggling. Doma wonders why the ground has stopped shaking before Zunama stopped shaking, but Zunama asks them what they think about his earthquake, offering them one last chance to apologize. He dances and wiggles his whisker, and Trunks wonders what it all means. Pan realizes that he does not actually have the power to cause earthquakes; he can only predict them and wiggle his whiskers when they come, but since he is drunk, he has not realized that the earthquake has stopped. Doma is mortified that they have fallen for this trick for so many years.

Everyone realizes that Zunama cannot cause earthquakes.

Zunama realizes they are all staring at him, so they tell him they know his secret. He threatens to make the volcano erupt, but Trunks has had enough; he quickly elbows Zunama in the head, knocking him down, but not out. Zunama promises to make the volcano erupt right away, so Pan tells him to go for it. They know he cannot cause earthquakes. Trunks tells him to give up now; they all know his secret. Zunama cries, insisting he never intended to take it this far. Doma reminds him that he nearly bullied his fiancée away from him, but Zunama apologizes and begs for forgiveness. Pan tells him to give it up, but he says this is different; his entire body is quivering and a big earthquake is coming. Giru warns of danger, and then Zunama tells them that the volcano is about to erupt, too. That is why he has been raiding the village more lately; Mount Calvo's activity has been increasing.

The earth shakes again, and steam starts to pour out of vents. Goku looks down at the magma and realizes this is serious, telling everyone to hurry up and get out. Everyone runs, Zunama included, jumping into the pool to escape. Goku waits behind as the lava rushes towards them, firing a Kamehameha to stop the flow and propelling all of them out of the pool. Behind them, the volcano is erupting, and Pan exclaims that the village is in danger. Lava rushes down the sides of the mountain, and Goku makes up his mind; he approaches the volcano and aims yet another Kamehameha, destroying the entire mountain. Goku thinks he might have overdone it a little, but he shrugs it off, and everyone falls over.

Doma and Leine live happily ever after.

The villagers, including Zunama, gather around the spaceship as the Earth gang prepares to depart. Leine hands over her Dragon Ball, and Pan thanks her. Leine says they should be thanking her; Doma agrees, thanking her for going to so much trouble for them. Goku asks what they are going to do with Zunama, and Leine says that they discussed it and decided he could stay in the village, since he seems to truly regret what he did. Doma adds that Zunama has agreed to warn them if an earthquake is coming.

Just then, the Dragon Ball that Pan is holding starts glowing yellow, levitating upward and away. One of the villagers grabs it, then transforms into a blue man in a red hooded outfit. A mushroom-shaped spaceship appears behind him, and he disappears with the Dragon Ball. [2] The Earth gang quickly boards the spaceship, departing Planet Calvo.[3]

Name

Doma's name is likely derived from Madeleine (マドレーヌ madorēnu), a traditional sponge cake from Lorraine, France. Doma's name is an anagram of the first two syllables, while his fiancée Leine's name comes from the second part of the word.

Production

Nakatsuru design.[4]

Doma was designed by Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, the head character designer for Dragon Ball GT.[4]
