"Dragon Ball Z Season Eight" is Funimation's eighth "season"-based DVD box set (of nine total), presenting Dragon Ball Z television episodes 220-253 in a standard-definition (480p), cropped, widescreen, "digitally remastered" format, originally released 10 February 2009 in North America. These "season" sets are both colloquially known and internally at Funimation referred to as the "Orange Bricks."[1]
General Overview
Each orange brick features episodes of Dragon Ball Z with branching video tracks depending on the language selected:
- With English voices selected: an altered English-only episode title card is displayed; openings are creditless; each episode's ending has English reversion credits unique to each episode's production.
- With Japanese voices selected: the original Japanese episode title card is displayed; openings and endings are creditless.
The opening theme uses its second and third animation versions (of four total), while the ending theme uses its first animation version (of two total). Funimation-specific credits are featured on the English video track's ending animation. All eyecatches are presented in their correct location mid-episode. No "next episode previews" are provided. The English audio (with original soundtrack) is selected by default.
- Opening: "WE GOTTA POWER"
- Ending: "We Were Angels"
- Eyecatch: (Gohan, Videl, Goten, North Kaio, Bubbles and Goku) (v.2)
Though the series is historically divided into "story arcs" in Japan, this release marks Funimation's first branding of arbitrary "seasons" for a home video release, the delineations of which do not correspond to their own actual broadcast seasons from either syndication or cable broadcasts.
The "U.S. Broadcast Audio" uses the Falconer Productions score and reverts the dub track to the 1999 Broadcast version (featured on the first run of home releases in North America). There are small differences between this version and FUNimation's original broadcast audio; most notably added dialogue and removal/addition of some added sound effects.

When Gohan learns of Babidi's intent to release the monster Majin Buu upon the Earth, he agrees to help the Supreme Kai in his quest to thwart to evil wizard's plans. During the ensuing battle, however, Gohan's lapse in training becomes apparent. Looking to earn some fast cash for her family, she puts these fighting talents to use in the World Martial Arts Tournament, where she easily advances to the finals against Mr. Satan. Not wanting the publicity that comes with winning the title, 18 strikes a deal with Mr. Satan that allows him to remain "the Champ"-as long as he pays her double the prize money!

- Techniques: Unknown
- Dream: Unknown
- First Appeared in: Episode 214
- Japanese Voice Actor: Takeshi Kusao / Masako Nozawa
- American Voice Actor: Laura Bailey / Kara Edwards
A late entry to the World Martial Arts Tournament, this mysterious masked fighter easily progresses through the early rounds and has emerged as one of the favorites to reach the finals versus Mr. Satan. His sudden appearance on the tournament scene has left the other top fighters wondering who he is and where he's come from. Little do they know-Mighty Mask's dark hood and cape conceal a Super Saiyan secret!
Having sacrificed himself to save the world from Perfect Cell, Goku, the hero of Dragon Ball Z, has passed into the next dimension. After his victory in the Other World Tournament, however, he has been granted one day back on Earth in order to participate in the World Martial Arts Tournament. During this time, he discovers that the Earth is once again threatened, this time by the evil wizard Babidi and his monster Majin Buu.
With only hours remaining before Goku must return to Other World, the hero has little chance of putting a stop to Majin Buu on his own. Even so, Goku has a plan. He uses his time to teach Goten and Trunks the Art of Fusion, in the hopes that their combined powers will be enough to defeat the monster.
After learning the Fusion Dance from Goku and Piccolo, Goten and Trunks are able to combine their powers to form the ultimate warrior! That's the theory, anyway. Unfortunately, it takes the young Saiyans several tries before they're able to get it right... After several abortive (and rather comical) attempts, the Art of Fusion is at last perfected, and Gotenks is born! He is perhaps the most powerful Super Saiyan that has ever lived, and he has the cocky attitude to prove it!
Gotenks' amazing abilities allow him to invent new fighting techniques on the fly, and he is even able to power up to Super Saiyan 3 levels after seeing Goku do it only once. Gotenks' powers should be more than enough to bring down the seemingly unstoppable Majin Buu, but he will have to work quickly-the fusion only holds for a few minutes!
Enemy Profiles
The wizard Babidi has come to Earth on a quest to resurrect the sleeping monster Majin Buu, a creature of pure evil created centuries ago by Babidi's father, Bibidi's dark magic allows him to bring out the evil in people's hearts and thus control them. As such, he has filled his ship with an army of powerful minions, all mindlessly devoted to helping him achieve his sinister goal.
Free Majin Buu from his cocoon requires an enormous amount of energy. Babidi has devised a plan to extract the energy of the Earth's most powerful fighters and channel it into his monster. If he succeeds, Buu will be reborn, and Babidi will at long last be able to resume his father's work of universal domination.
Buu, or Majin Buu, was conjured into existence long ago by the evil wizard Bibidi. A monstrous creature with a pink, rubbery body, Buu was intended to be the incarnation of pure evil. In the service of Bibidi, he is single-handedly responsible for the destruction of countless worlds. After centuries of lying dormant, Buu has been released by Bibidi's son, Babidi, to destroy Earth.
With his childlike personality, Buu does not have a strongly developed sense of good and evil. He performs his numerous acts of destruction simply because he finds them "fun". As he begins to form an unlikely friendship with Mr. Satan, however, he begins to realize the consequences of his actions. He even agrees to stop hurting people when he discovers that it upsets Mr. Satan.
Unfortunately, Buu's seeming change of heart may have come too late...
Tidbits
About The Transfer
This DVD box originally included a booklet. On the back side, a summary of Funimation's questionable methods of remastering the footage is provided. This summary is included below exactly as it was written. Funimation no longer includes the booklets with new printings.
To accomplish the Dragon Ball Z remaster process, FUNimation worked with Video Post & Transfer, a Dallas-based post-production house. The original Japanese film masters were transferred via an industry-standard Spirit DataCine, passing through a Digital Vision DVNR1000 to remove film grain, and then receiving a further round of processing using a Teranex VC600 video computer. These digital noise-reduction units each helped to remove thousands of instances of dirt, scratches, and debris.
The cleaned footage signal was then run through a da Vinci 2K Plus color system to ensure that the colors were true to the original film prints. The da Vinci 2K Plus is an industry standard system used for color correction in feature films and broadcast, and was primarily used in this instance to set the levels of the whites and blacks in the film in order to present the colors in a manner faithful to the original prints.
The final media for transfer was Sony's HDCAM, a fully high-definition digital tape. The film was laid to tape at 1080p HD at 24 frames per second. The frame-rate is important to note, as it allowed the film, which was originally created at 24 frames per second, to be transferred to tape frame by frame. This frame-rate prevented any unnecessary data from being added to the final video, and preserves the film masters at the highest quality possible.
