"Dragon Ball Z Season Seven" is Funimation's seventh "season"-based DVD box set (of nine total), presenting Dragon Ball Z television episodes 195-216 in a standard-definition (480p), cropped, widescreen, "digitally remastered" format, originally released 11 November 2008 in North America. These "season" sets are both colloquially known and internally at Funimation referred to as the "Orange Bricks."[1]

General Overview

Each orange brick features episodes of Dragon Ball Z with branching video tracks depending on the language selected:

  • With English voices selected: an altered English-only episode title card is displayed; openings are creditless; each episode's ending has English reversion credits unique to each episode's production.
  • With Japanese voices selected: the original Japanese episode title card is displayed; openings and endings are creditless.

The opening theme uses its second and third animation versions (of four total), while the ending theme uses its first animation version (of two total). Funimation-specific credits are featured on the English video track's ending animation. All eyecatches are presented in their correct location mid-episode. No "next episode previews" are provided. The English audio (with original soundtrack) is selected by default.

Though the series is historically divided into "story arcs" in Japan, this release marks Funimation's first branding of arbitrary "seasons" for a home video release, the delineations of which do not correspond to their own actual broadcast seasons from either syndication or cable broadcasts.

The "U.S. Broadcast Audio" uses the Falconer Productions score and reverts the dub track to the 1999 Broadcast version (featured on the first run of home releases in North America). There are small differences between this version and FUNimation's original broadcast audio; most notably a vocal re-read for the Afterlife Tournament Announcer.

Differences between this track and Funimation's first dub adaptation include re-written lines of dialogue, vocal re-reads for prominent characters, and removed/missing vocal effects.

Character Profiles

The booklet's profiles are included below exactly as they were written. The profiles were originally accompanied by character art.

Hero Profiles

{{Quotation|The eldest son of Goku and Chi-Chi, Gohan is now a teenager. Though he proved himself to be the strongest of the Z-Fighters in the battle with Perfect Cell, Gohan doesn't enjoy fighting, and has allowed his training to fall by the wayside while he concentrates on his studies. Gohan attends Orange Star High School, where he meets Videl for the first time.

Appalled by the rampant crime in the city, Gohan decides to use his powers to help. In order to keep his identity a secret, however, he dons a disguise while bringing criminals to justice and performing heroic deeds-he is the Great Saiyaman! Whenever trouble arises, Gohan can transform into the Great Saiyaman with a simple push of a button on his Transformation Band wristwatch.

When Gohan's superhero identity is eventually discovered by Videl, she threatens to reveal his secret to the world unless he agrees to participate in the World Martial Arts Tournament.

  • Trunks
    • Race: Half-Saiyan Half-Earthling
    • Personality: Extremely strong and determined, and also humble and kind
    • Dream: To make his father proud
    • First Appeared in: Episode 119
    • Japanese Voice Actor: Takeshi Kusao
    • American Voice Actor: Laura Bailey

Trunks is the son of Bulma—a headstrong, technical genius—and Vegeta—one of the most powerful fighters in the Dragon Ball Z universe. The Trunks of this time-line grows up in a peaceful world free of the android menace. Trunks proves himself to be a powerful fighter early on. He and Goten are best friends and competitive rivals. They love to spar to see which of them is the strongest. Trunks enters the Junior Division of the World Martial Arts Tournament, but is disappointed he cannot fight with the adults. Therefore, he and Goten devise a plan to compete with the grown-ups. Underneath the cover of a thick hood and cloak, they stand on each other's shoulders and enter the tournament as the fighter, Mighty Mask.

Goten is the second son of Goku and Chi-Chi, and Gohan's little brother. Goten loves to train in martial arts. He quickly develops incredibly strong powers (he just naturally goes Super Saiyan) that enable him to fight alongside the adults in their mission to defend Earth. Goten's best friend is Trunks, who is approximately one year older. They are often seen together. Goten goofs around when he fights. Pure of heart, he'll quickly jump into danger to help his friends and family.

Videl is the daughter of Mr. Satan, the reigning Martial Arts Champion of the World. She attends Orange Star High School with Gohan. At the age of seventeen she is already an expert at martial arts, and she often volunteers her skills to the city police, assisting them whenever they need help apprehending particularly rowdy bad guys.

Videl hates to be outdone, so when the Great Saiyman [sic] appears and threatens her status as the city's number-one hero, she is determined to unmask him. When she discovers that the Great Saiyaman is Gohan, she threatens to expose his identity to the world unless he agrees to enter the upcoming World Martial Arts Tournament. Not only does she want to test her skills against the Great Saiyaman, but she sees this as a one-of-a-kind opportunity for the son and daughter of two previous champions to compete.

After seven years of living on Earth, Dende has proven to be a capable guardian. Like Kami before him, Dende lives in the Lookout high above the Earth where he can keep an eye on things. Also like Kami, Dende makes the Lookout available to the Z-Fighters as a place to train.

The Supreme Kai rules over all of the Kais of Other World and is charged with protecting the rightful order of the universe. He has inherited this position by default after the previous Supreme Kai was eliminated by the Wizard Bibidi and his evil monster Majin Buu, and thus, is somewhat unprepared for the enormity of the task. He has come to Earth during the World Martial Arts Tournament to enlist the aid of Goku and the Z-Fighters in his quest to prevent Majin Buu from being reawakened.

A powerful fighter, Kibito serves as the loyal bodyguard of Supreme Kai. He has lived a long time, though he's not as old as Supreme Kai. He has the ability to instantaneously transport himself and others to any part of the universe. He also has the power to heal those who are injured or near death.

Enemy Profiles

After taking credit for defeating the monster Cell, Mr. Satan's popularity is greater than ever. His fans adore him, almost as much as he adores the spotlight. As the reigning champion, Mr. Satan returns to the World Martial Arts Tournament in spectacular fashion, ready to defend his title. This year, however, he will have to contend with the likes of Goku and the Z-Fighters! His Megaton Punch may not be enough to take down a Super Saiyan, but Mr. Satan has plenty of other tricks up his sleeve to help him win the day.

Having spent his life in the west quadrant of the galaxy as a great and honorable warrior, Pikkon becomes West Kai's prize fighter when he passes into Other World. Like Goku, Pikkon wants to train under the Grand Kai and joins the Other World Tournament. He advances to the final round and faces Goku. Goku narrowly beats him, but both are disqualified for touching the ring's ceiling, thus ending the battle in a draw.

Tidbits

About The Transfer

This DVD box originally included a booklet. On the back side, a summary of Funimation's questionable methods of remastering the footage is provided. This summary is included below exactly as it was written. Funimation no longer includes the booklets with new printings.

To accomplish the Dragon Ball Z remaster process, FUNimation worked with Video Post & Transfer, a Dallas-based post-production house. The original Japanese film masters were transferred via an industry-standard Spirit DataCine, passing through a Digital Vision DVNR1000 to remove film grain, and then receiving a further round of processing using a Teranex VC600 video computer. These digital noise-reduction units each helped to remove thousands of instances of dirt, scratches, and debris.

The cleaned footage signal was then run through a da Vinci 2K Plus color system to ensure that the colors were true to the original film prints. The da Vinci 2K Plus is an industry standard system used for color correction in feature films and broadcast, and was primarily used in this instance to set the levels of the whites and blacks in the film in order to present the colors in a manner faithful to the original prints.

The final media for transfer was Sony's HDCAM, a fully high-definition digital tape. The film was laid to tape at 1080p HD at 24 frames per second. The frame-rate is important to note, as it allowed the film, which was originally created at 24 frames per second, to be transferred to tape frame by frame. This frame-rate prevented any unnecessary data from being added to the final video, and preserves the film masters at the highest quality possible.
