"Seven Years Later! Starting Today, Gohan is a High School Student" is the ninety-ninth episode of Dragon Ball Z Kai (the international version of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Kai) and the first episode of "The Final Chapters", the international branding for the series' Majin Boo arc. The episode debuted in France on J-One on 01 September 2014[1] and on Toonami in the United States on 07 January 2017.
Synopsis
Seven years have passed since the battle with Cell, and Gohan begins commuting to a high school in Satan City. He comes across a bank robbery on the way to school and dispatches the robbers as a Super Saiyan, overturning their getaway car with a Kiai. Mister Satan's daughter Videl arrives on the scene and asks Gohan who took care of the robbers, but he feigns ignorance and sneaks away. An older gentleman informs her that it was the "Golden Warrior", a personage known by reputation in the city, and that he was wearing the student badge of Orange Star High School.
At school, Videl asks her blond friend Shapner if he is the Golden Warrior, but he explains that he was training that morning and did not have time for such nonsense. Erasa questions whether the Golden Warrior could be stronger than Mister Satan, but a fellow student finds the notion ridiculous. Erasa introduces herself and Videl, informing Gohan that Videl‘s father is Mister Satan, which shocks Gohan. Erasa says that Gohan should be grateful to Mister Satan for his life, but then Videl remembers where she has seen Gohan before: at the robbery that morning. Erasa tells Gohan that the Golden Warrior is a justice fighter who has been seen in the city three times over the past ten days, and Gohan realizes that she is referring to incidents that occurred on his previous two visits to the city to register for school, in addition to the incident that morning. Videl suspiciously relates what the older gentleman told her about the Golden Warrior‘s school badge and clothing. (Even in the manga, the initial description of the clothing was not given "on screen".) Shapner scoffs at the idea of a bookworm being athletic, and points out that Gohan‘s hair is not even blond. Videl thinks to herself that there were some people at the Cell Games whose hair turned blond. Erasa asks Gohan about his commute to school, and he tells her that he lives in a small village in Section 439 East. Erasa exclaims that this is a thousand kilometers away. The teacher reprimands her, and she hides her face in her English textbook, asking Gohan how he manages a commute that takes five hours in a jet flyer. Gohan laughs it off, explaining that the commute is indeed a hardship, but Videl is still suspicious.
In gym class, the activity of the day is baseball; Shapner asks Gohan whether he knows of the game, and Gohan answers that he has never played, but he knows the rules. Shapner tells Videl she can have Gohan on her team; she is not interested, but Erasa suggests Gohan might be good at strategy, so Videl agrees to accept him and assigns him to right field, a position often reserved for weaker players.[2]
Gohan thinks to himself that he will need to be careful about showing his abilities; Chi-Chi and Bulma have told him that it would cause problems were his identity to become known. Videl pitches a fastball to Shapner, who knocks it "out of the park"—until Gohan catches it. While everyone stares in amazement, Gohan thinks that he must throw the ball to third base to out the player who was not standing on the base when he made the catch. He reminds himself to throw the ball gently, but the baseman is nevertheless knocked flat on his back when he catches it; the spinning ball smokes in his glove. Gohan is excited as he realizes this is the third out, but as he runs toward home base to change sides, he notices everyone staring at him and realizes that he might have overdone it despite his precautions. The coach is astonished; he says that Gohan must have jumped eight meters; Gohan claims it was just a fluke, but his classmates are incredulous.
The coach calls for the first batter; Gohan‘s teammate informs him that he is first up. Gohan approaches home base as a left-handed batter; the coach informs him that his grip is backwards, but Gohan does not understand, so the coach tells him to bat however he likes. Gohan thinks to himself that he should just not hit the ball so as to avoid drawing more attention to himself. Meanwhile, Shapner holds a grudge against Gohan for the lost home run, and he decides to intimidate Gohan by aiming a fastball at his head. However Gohan does not dodge as he expects, and Shapner is momentarily anxious that he has delivered a fatal blow to Gohan‘s head; meanwhile Gohan thinks that he is lucky to be able to walk to first base without hitting the ball and revealing his abilities. He fails to notice the astonishment of his classmates and Videl‘s heightened suspicions.
As Gohan retrieves his bag from his locker, Shapner asks whether he will join any clubs. Gohan says he has yet to decide, so Shapner invites him to join the boxing club. Gohan amends that he does not plan on joining any clubs, and Erasa interjects to explain that he has no time because of his incredible commute. Erasa asks Gohan for a ride to her house, but he apologizes, explaining that his ride is a one-seater. Shapner says he should move to Satan City, but Gohan demurs.
Gohan walks briskly away from the school in order to reach a place where he can safely call Kinto-un, but Videl is suspicious that he is walking, so she follows him. Gohan notices, though, and hurries around a corner, jumping quickly onto the roof of the building to avoid her. As he flies away on Kinto-un, he thinks to himself that he needs to come up with a better disguise to fight crime, and he believes that Bulma might be able to help him. He thinks this was the most exhausting day of his life.
