v · d · e

"A New Hero, the Great Saiyaman, is Born!" is the one hundredth episode of Dragon Ball Z Kai (the international version of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Kai) and the second episode of "The Final Chapters", the international branding for the series' Majin Boo arc. The episode debuted in the United States on Cartoon Network's Toonami on 07 January 2017.

Synopsis

Gohan stops by Capsule Corporation on his way home from school and asks Bulma to devise a transformation for him to use a a disguise. She agrees, saying she will make a suit and convert it into particles much like capsule technology. She commends his desire to fight crime and says she will have the disguise ready in two hours. Gohan asks where to find Trunks; Bulma says he might be in the Gravity Room with Vegeta, who has decided Trunks is old enough for serious training. Bulma thinks that Vegeta wants Trunks to be stronger than Gohan, which makes Gohan nervous.

Outside the Gravity Room, Gohan greets Trunks who is excited to see him. Vegeta emerges from the Gravity Room; Gohan politely greets him and apologizes for the intrusion. Vegeta observes that Gohan is out of shape and chides him for slacking during peacetime. As Vegeta withdraws, Trunks asks Gohan what he wants to play.

The sun is setting when Bulma finishes Gohan‘s disguise, which is activated by a small red button on a wristwatch. Trunks is excited to see the disguise and asks his mother to make one for him, too. Gohan transforms into his costume and is quite pleased with the result, but Trunks is unimpressed and no longer wants one for himself. Bulma and Trunks say goodbye to Gohan as he departs for home; Gohan asks Kinto-un to go full speed as it is getting late, but then he realizes that he can fly in his new disguise without fear of being recognized, which will save him a lot of time on his commute. He challenges Kinto-un to a race, knowing he can easily win. He holds back for a time, but he eventually increases his speed, leaving Kinto-un behind.

Gohan passes back through Satan City on the way home; while flying over the city he notices reckless drivers endangering others on the streets. He confronts them, admonishing them to drive safely, and they mock his costume, asking: "Who do you think you are?" Gohan realizes he has not yet come up with an alias. After some thought, he introduces himself as the Great Saiyaman with the characteristic poses. The drivers laugh at the name and Gohan becomes angry, stomping the street and creating a small earthquake. The drivers quickly apologize, assuring Great Saiyaman that his name is cool and promising to drive safely. Gohan is pleased and recovers their car from the crack in the street with one hand, which further frightens the reckless drivers into submission. Gohan is proud that he got through to them. A crowd has gathered to watch, and rumors of Great Saiyaman spread throughout Satan City.

When Gohan arrives home in his costume, Chi-Chi says he is being childish; she says he is like his father in that respect, and Gohan is embarrassed. Then Goten arrives home with a large fish; he thinks Gohan‘s costume is super cool. (Z 201)

After dark, Gohan practices his Great Saiyaman routine with encouragement from Goten, but Chi-Chi interrupts and tells him to go to bed or he will be late for school. (Z 202)

In the morning, Chi-Chi and Goten see him off to school, and Chi-Chi advises him not to rush and to watch out for airplanes. Gohan transforms, and Goten says again that he looks cool. Gohan says that Bulma can make a costume for Goten too. As he takes off, he tells Goten that he can use Kinto-un now. Chi-Chi observes that Gohan is so happy with his new persona, he was not able to stop transforming the day before. The narrator introduces Goten, explaining that he was left behind by Goku before the battle with Cell.

Gohan flies to school, thinking he will make it there in 20 minutes. He lands on the roof of the school, looks around a corner to make sure no one is watching, and tranforms back into his school uniform. As he enters the school, he comments that he will be able to sleep a little later from now on.

In Chemistry, two students in front of Gohan are talking about the new champion of justice, someone other than the Golden Warrior. He is said to look ridiculous, but he is really strong, and he goes by "Great Tireman". Gohan angrily corrects them: his name is "Great Saiyaman"! This gets the attention of the entire class; the student who had heard the rumors asks him how he would know the champion‘s name; Gohan says he heard it from someone who saw him in the flesh. The teacher asks if he may continue the lesson, and Videl is suspicious again.

At that moment, Videl gets an alert on her watch about a hijacking at the East District bus terminal. A trio of robbers has taken a tour bus full of senior citizens hostage using automatic weapons. Videl assures the policeman that she will be right there and runs out of the classroom. The teacher commends her and tells her to be careful. Gohan asks Erasa what is going on; she tells him that Videl is a champion of justice. Gohan is incredulous, but Erasa does not understand why; her father is Mister Satan after all; Videl is strong and the police often request her assistance. Shapner warns Gohan not to underestimate Videl; she is much stronger than him, maybe even as strong as her father. Recalling Mister Satan‘s performance at the Cell Games, Gohan becomes concerned for Videl's safety. He rushes out of the classroom, telling the teacher that he needs to use the bathroom; he transforms when he reaches the roof of the building, strikes a few poses, and takes off before realizing that he has no idea where to find the bus terminal. (In manga chapter 424 Gohan realizes he can try to sense Videl's ki, but this realization was not present in the TV series.)

Meanwhile at the terminal, the robbers have collected their ransom but they refuse to release the hostages and open fire on the police before driving away; the squad leader orders his policemen to hold their fire to avoid hitting the hostages, who are in fact enjoying their hijacking adventure; one old woman takes a commemorative photograph of the driver and a robber wearing a duck mask. The police chase after the bus, but the other robber, a man with long black hair, opens fire and causes them to crash into each other. The officers are discouraged, but then they see Videl‘s helicopter approaching; they call out to her and she gives them a thumbs up. The robbers see her approaching and open fire but she dodges their bullets with her helicopter. The hostages are excited to see her and take photographs. Gohan is coming up behind her; she jumps from her helicopter onto the roof of the bus and he is impressed. She dodges bullets until the robber runs out of ammunition, and then she kicks through the window and subdues the hijackers, punching out the driver in the meantime. Everyone celebrates until they realize the bus is headed off a cliff. They believe they are doomed, but they are saved when Great Saiyaman catches the bus. Once everyone is safely back on high ground, an admiring Videl asks Gohan who he is. He chuckles, pleased to be given the opportunity to introduce himself with fanfare, but Videl is nonplussed by his performance. Gohan fails to notice, though, thinking that his diligent practice paid off. Gohan bids her farewell, addressing her by name as he takes off. The crowd cheers, and Videl wonders how he knows her name. (Z 201)
