Gine is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball franchise. Initially only named and described by Akira Toriyama in an interview, Gine makes her formal debut in the "Dragon Ball Minus" bonus chapter of Jaco the Galactic Patrolman as the mother of Son Goku ( "Kakarrot") and Raditz, the content of which was later adapted into the Dragon Ball Super: Broly theatrical film.

Biography

History

A long time ago, Gine fought on a four-person team together with Bardock. Gine was not cut out for being a warrior (being repeatedly saved from danger by Bardock), and transitions to working at a meat distribution center on Planet Vegeta. Though normally Saiyans do not have much of a notion for romance or marriage, a special bond forms between Gine and Bardock. The two produced two sons: Raditz and Kakarrot. Though they shared this special relationship, the family of Gine, Bardock, Raditz, and Kakarrot were never together.[1]

Dragon Ball Minus

Gine's debut appearance in the "Dragon Ball Minus" bonus chapter of Jaco the Galactic Patrolman

Bardock returns to Gine, the mother of his two sons, suspicious of Freeza's motivations for calling all Saiyans back to Planet Vegeta. Gine informs Bardock that Raditz is off on a faraway planet with the prince, Vegeta, while Kakarrot has been in an incubator for three years. Bardock tells Gine he plans to steal a space pod at night so they can launch Kakarrot to a different planet. Gine angrily questions Bardock, saying that being an infiltration baby is dangerous, though seemingly relents when Bardock tells her of his suspicions.

With Kakarrot and space pod in tow, Gine mentions to Bardock that it is unlike him to be worried about his child; Bardock responds that he must have gotten it from Gine, who he says is a softy. Bardock has programmed the pod to go to a distant planet named Earth. They will be unable to go with him, since the army's scouters would sense them. From outside the pod, Gine tells Kakarrot that, if Bardock is wrong, they will come get him as soon as they can. Additionally, he should not look up at the moon for too long, and to watch out for the Galactic Patrol.

Gine and Bardock embrace as Kakarrot flies off in the space pod.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly

Having become suspicious of Freeza's order for all Saiyans to reconvene, Bardock returns home to his wife Gine, hard at work in her butcher shop. Gine catches him up to speed: their son Raditz has become a full-fledged warrior and is off on a team with Prince Vegeta (a troublesome partner, in Bardock's opinion), while their younger son Kakarrot is still in his incubation capsule in the back room, though he is just about ready to come out. They go see him; he is still small (a late bloomer, Gine says), but already looks just like his father, particularly his hair. Bardock suddenly announces that come nightfall they should steal a space pod and send Kakarrot off to some planet. With his low potential it is probably his eventual fate anyway, and Bardock thinks they should do it now while there is still time. Gine is reluctant at first but agrees once Bardock explains his fears about Freeza.

That night, Bardock and Gine put Kakarrot inside a space pod and take him out into the wastelands surrounding the town. Gine thinks all three of them should flee together, but Bardock says they would be tracked via scouter. Bardock has programmed Kakarrot's space pod for Earth, a distant world inhabited by a weak and primitive race which is unlikely to be targeted by Freeza's army anytime soon. Gine assures Kakarrot that they will come get him as soon as it turns out Bardock's fears are unfounded, while Bardock tells him to survive no matter what. With that, they launch the pod into space.

Dragon Ball Fusions

In the Dragon Ball Fusions sub-event "An Unlikely Pair", the player character intervenes as Rubee, Yamma, and Fargo, three aliens intent on crushing the Saiyans, attack Gine. The young version of Goku jumps in as well, with Gine quietly recognizing him as Kakarrot.

After defeating the villains, Gine believes Goku has let his guard down, but Goku handily takes care of them on his own. Goku asks the lady if she is OK, though she responds by asking what he calls himself. Gine thanks "Goku" for his help, noting he has become very strong, just like another Saiyan man she knows that would have taken them out with a single punch. Goku thinks he must still have a way to go as Gine confirms his unfulfilled potential. She decides to stick around with Goku and his team, formally introducing herself as Gine.

In the game's "Saiyan Saga: Fantastic Fusions" sub-event, Towa asks to be introduced to a female Saiyan to test EX Fusion with (with Towa's ulterior motive being an opportunity to learn the true nature of Saiyan power). If the player character brings Gine back, she remarks that she is not that strong and will not bring much to the fusion; the player receives new clothing options as a reward, regardless. Gine and Towa are able to fuse into Towane (トワネ, Towane).

Name

Gine's name is likely an anagram of the Japanese word for a bulb-bearing green onion (ネギ, negi), similar to a "spring onion" or "Welsh onion".

Production

Gine was initially revealed in the "Akira Toriyama-sensei Super Q&A!!" within the Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock "Super Kanzenban" (packaged with the March 2014 issue of Saikyō Jump), where Gine's history and relationship with Bardock are described by Akira Toriyama. The character formally debuted two months later in the "Dragon Ball Minus" bonus chapter of Jaco the Galactic Patrolman.
