The untitled third quarterly chapter of Dragon Ball SD by Naho Ooishi continues said manga series, based on the original story by Akira Toriyama. The chapter was published 11 August 2011 within the Fall 2011 issue of Saikyō Jump, a manga anthology specializing in tie-ins to other Shueisha properties. This is the third of four quarterly "prototype"-esque SD chapters preceding the long-running reboot of the series, which restarted the following year alongside the magazine's own relaunch as a monthly (later bimonthly) publication. Dragon Ball SD was an anchor series for the launch of the magazine with all pages appearing in full color. The original four quarterly chapters have never been reprinted or collected following their original publication.

Synopsis

After absorbing No. 17 and 18, Cell announces that he will host the Cell Games to find a worthy challenger. Son Goku is excited and takes Son Gohan to train with him in the Room of Spirit and Time. Soon, the day of the Cell Games comes and Goku offers only one challenger: his son. Gohan powers up to Super Saiyan 2 and is able to defeat Cell, forcing him to regurgitate the androids. When Cell decides to destroy the world rather than lose, Goku and Gohan fire a Kamehameha together to defeat the menace.

Summary

In a flashback, Cell consumes the life forces of many people as he powers up, then consumes Artificial Humans No. 17 and 18 to achieve his "perfect" form. Once at full power, he elects not to fight Kuririn, No. 16, or Future Trunks, but instead challenges the world to a martial arts tournament. If no one is able to defeat him, he will destroy the world. A short time later, Trunks and Kuririn deliver the news to Goku, Gohan, and Vegeta. Goku is excited for the tournament, but says that they are not yet powerful enough to win. Instead, they should spend time in the Room of Spirit and Time to train. Inside the training room, Goku tells his son that he senses a great power within him. They train together until the day of the Cell Games with Gohan now able to become a Super Saiyan.

On the day of the tournament, Goku and Gohan are joined at the tournament grounds by No. 16, Vegeta, Trunks, Tenshinhan, Yamcha, Kuririn, and Piccolo. Cell asks who will go first, but no one wants to volunteer. Goku suggests that his son is the strongest so volunteers him. Cell makes fun of Gohan's power, but Gohan powers up to Super Saiyan 2, shocking the other Saiyans at the tournament by the new level of power. Cell and Gohan begin to fight, but Gohan dominates him easily and forces him to regurgitate the absorbed androids, causing Cell to revert to his weaker "imperfect" form. Gohan tells Cell to give in, but the monster blows himself up like a balloon and threatens to self-destruct; if he cannot win, he will just destroy the planet. Goku says that they have to destroy him completely before he can blow himself up. Together with Gohan, they launch a father-and-son Kamehameha which completely obliterates Cell and saves the day.

Notes

  • This chapter roughly adapts the entirety of the Cell arc starting from chapter 361 and the initial appearance of Cell, through the Kamehamema in 415.
  • Unlike in the original work, neither No. 16 nor Son Goku are killed in the final battle, with Gohan able to power up to Super Saiyan 2 based only on Cell's taunts rather than the death of his friend.
