The Cell Games is a martial arts competition hosted in at the Cell Games Arena, northwest of Central City. After Cell achieved his "Perfect" form, he became bored and challenged the people of Earth to a tournament to determine the fate of the world, everyone vs. Cell. This tournament was held on May 26, Age 767[note 1] Midway through, Cell became bored with the rules: first he destroyed the arena to eliminate ring outs, then he began attacking the spectators to force Son Gohan to break. The tournament ended in a free-for all melee leading to the deaths of Artificial Human No. 16, Son Goku, and Future Trunks and finally the defeat and death of Cell himself via a one-handed kamehameha fired by Son Gohan.
Rules
Cell specified that the tournament would be similar to a Tenka'ichi Budōkai, except that it would be something akin to a marathon match for him: each contestant will fight Cell one-by-one and the more contestants that fight, the more fatigued he would presumably become.[note 2] A contestant could lose by ring-out, surrender, or death. If Cell wins, he promised to kill every person on Earth. The only way to save the planet is for Cell to be defeated.[1]
During the tournament itself, Cell became bored with this format. During his battle with Son Goku, he eliminated the "ring-out" clause so that competitors could only surrender or die. While fighting Son Gohan, Cell destroyed all pretense of the tournament and it devolved into a free-for-all where he actively (or with his Cell Jrs) attacked the spectators, and where many of the spectators (Son Goku, Vegeta, and No. 16 in the manga; others in the anime) attacked Cell before the end.
