The following fictional characters appeared in Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball manga series.
The following fictional characters appeared in Dragon Ball, either in Akira Toriyama's original manga series or exclusive to Toei Animation's animated adaptation of it.
* A list of original characters that do not appear in the original manga series can be found on the Anime Original Characters page.

Main Characters (Warriors)
Earthlings
The warriors listed below are those typically seen at the forefront of battle throughout the series. They are often referred to as the "Z Warriors".
The word "Earthling" (地球人; chikyūjin) in Dragon Ball refers to any being of terrestrial origin. Since the majority of the series is spent on Earth, it is no surprise that this group is the largest character base. Akira Toriyama, a nature-loving person himself, used many inhabitants of Earth for the basis of his characters, not just humans. Although some of these non-human Earthling characters have human characteristics (walking upright and talking), they are classified separately from ordinary humans. All "Earthling" characters have been divided up into the following categories:

Aliens
: <small>Japanese VA: Ryo Horikawa</small>
Aliens, or extraterrestrials, in the "Dragon World" are beings not originally from the Planet Earth. After Akira Toriyama had exhausted all of the Earth's strongest warriors, he decided to expand to the rest of the universe. From that point on, the series was never the same. Toriyama was now able to create a much wider variety of characters at will, specifically ridiculously strong opponents for Goku and friends to face off against. In addition, many of the Earth's greatest warriors turned out to be aliens themselves, including the main protagonist, Son Goku. All "Alien" characters have been divided up into the following categories:

These divine figures inhabit the afterlife of the "Dragon World" and it is their job to oversee its mortal inhabitants, both as they live their lives and in the afterlife. While the majority of them are quite powerful in their own right, they are not necessarily the strongest beings in the universe, with many of the Z Warriors surpassing them. Like many hierarchies, each divine figure oversees a specific region and reports to a superior that oversees those collective regions. In a Dragon Ball Z anime-only filler story arc, the Dai Kaiō is shown to oversee the Afterlife Tournament, held between numerous deceased warriors from the universe's four galaxies. All "Afterlife" characters have been divided up into the following categories:

Main Characters (Non-Warriors)
The following main characters support the "Z Warriors".

Earthling (Martial Artist)
Although they are martial artist, their battle skills and strength pail in comparison to the main warriors.

; Kame-Sen'nin
: <small>Japanese VA: Kohei Miyauchi (DB & Z 1-260), Joji Yanami (DB 137), Hiroshi Masuoka (Z 288 & GT), Masaharu Sato (Z M13, Kai, "DBZ: Battle of Gods"), Kinya Aikawa (10th Anniversary Movie)</small>
: Kame-Sen'nin is a dirty old man, and although he doesn't look it, is a master of the martial arts. He normally spends much of his time trying to get a peek at women and he owns possibly the world's largest pornography collection.

; Chi-Chi
: <small>Japanese VA: Mayumi Sho (DB & Z 1-66), Naoko Watanabe (Z 88-291, GT, Kai)</small>
: The daughter of Gyumao, she joins Goku in search of Kame-Sen'nin, who possesses the Basho Fan. Before Goku leaves her village, Chi-Chi asks him to marry her and Goku agrees, thinking that marriage is some sort of delicious food. The two eventually meet again as participants in the 23rd Tenka'ichi Budokai, get married, and have two sons.

; Gyumao
: <small>Japanese VA: Daisuke Gori (DB, Z, GT, Kai 4-18), Ryuzaburo Otomo (Kai 55-98)</small>
: The father of Chi-Chi, Gyumao is known as the "emperor of devils". He spends his time protecting his castle full of treasure atop of Mount Frypan from treasure hunters. When he meets Goku, he informs him that he trained with Goku's Grandpa under Muten Roshi.

; Yajirobe
: <small>Japanese VA: Mayumi Tanaka</small>

; Mister Satan
: <small>Japanese VA: Daisuke Gori (Z, GT), Unsho Ishizuka (Kai, DB: TAG VS and all games following)</small>

; Videl
: <small>Japanese VA: Yuko Minaguchi, Shino Kakinuma (Toriko × One Piece × Dragon Ball Z: Super Collaboration Special!!)</small>

Earthling
; Bulma
: <small>Japanese VA: Hiromi Tsuru</small>
: An intelligent and spirited young girl in search of the seven Dragon Balls. She uses state-of-the-art technology, such as the Dragon Radar and Hoi Poi Capsules, to track them down. In search of the Dragon Balls, which she wants to use to wish for a boyfriend, she stumbles upon Goku, who she decides to take with her as a bodyguard.

; Umigame (lit. "Sea Turtle")
: <small>Japanese VA: Daisuke Gori (DB, Z, GT), Takahiro Fujimoto (Kai)</small>
: Kame-Sen'nin's trusty turtle, Umigame constantly complains about his master's perverted actions. He tries to keep him in-line around the ladies, but his objections usually result in a scolding. He plays a relatively small part in the manga, but he has quite a few large roles in the anime.

; Oolong
: <small>Japanese VA: Naoki Tatsuta</small>
: A perverted shape-shifting pig, Oolong terrorizes a small village and abducts their girls. As Oolong fights Goku, it is apparent that he doesn't acquire any special skills from whatever he shape-shifts into, and that he can hold a form for no more than five minutes. It is soon obvious that Oolong is more of a spectator than a helper when it comes to fighting. He is also considered a coward by most, especially Bulma.

; Pu'er
: <small>Japanese VA: Naoko Watanabe</small>
: Pu'er is Yamcha's shape-shifting friend and together they rob anyone that wanders into their desert. Like Oolong, Pu'er has the ability to change his shape into any form. Though unlike Oolong, Pu'er can hold that form an indefinite amount of time.

; Lunch
: <small>Japanese VA: Mami Koyama</small>
: Kame-Sen'nin sends Kuririn and Goku off to bring back a pichi-pichi gal, and the two eventually rescue and return with a peculiar girl... Lunch. The boys soon find that she's much more than meets the eye, as her other self is revealed when she sneezes.

Friends of Main Characters
Earthling
; Grandma Paozu
: <small>Japanese VA: Reiko Suzuki</small>
: An inhabitant of the village that Oolong terrorizes, she posseses the Six-Star Ball that Goku and Bulma are in search of. In exchange for saving her village from the dreaded Oolong, she promises to give Bulma her Dragon Ball.

; Baby Gamera
: <small>Japanese VA: Naoki Tatsuta</small>
: Baby Gamera is a really neat mini-version of Gamera, which Kame-Sen'nin uses to travel to Mount Frypan while riding on his back. He can pull his arms and legs into his body and release a fire through the holes, propelling him and his rider through the air while spinning.

; Sno
: <small>Japanese VA: Naoko Watanabe (DB), Mayumi Tanaka (Z 285)</small>
: A girl from Jingle Village that saves Goku's life after his plane crashes into the snow. In gratitude, Goku sets off to rescue the mayor of her village, who has been taken hostage by the Red Ribbon Army. Years later, a grown-up Sno contributes her energy to the final Genki-Dama at the end of the series. It's at this point that her name is first mentioned in the manga proper, although she’s called by name in the anime from the start.

; Arificial Human No. 8
: <small>Japanese VA: Shozo Iizuka</small>
: A human-based artificial human created by Doctor Gero. Murasaki unleashes him as his secret weapon to defeat Goku, but the kindhearted No. 8 quickly befriends him instead. Goku nicknames him "Hatchan", a pun on hachi (Japanese for "eight"), and the honorific chan.

Reason: Brief character descriptions.

The following fictional characters appeared in Dragon Ball, either in Akira Toriyama's original manga series or exclusive to Toei Animation's animated adaptation of it.

Earthlings

The word "Earthling" (地球人; chikyūjin) in Dragon Ball refers to any being of terrestrial origin. Since the majority of the series is spent on Earth, it is no surprise that this group is the largest character base. Akira Toriyama, a nature-loving person himself, used many inhabitants of Earth for the basis of his characters, not just humans. Although some of these non-human Earthling characters have human characteristics (walking upright and talking), they are classified separately from ordinary humans. All "Earthling" characters have been divided up into the following categories:

Aliens

Afterlife
