Biography
The Apprentice Kaiōshin
Zamasu is a former Kaiō of Universe 10, chosen by the Kaiōshin Gowasu to become an Apprentice Kaiōshin to one day succeed his role. Zamasu studies under Gowasu and serves him tea, the clarity of which indicates his purity. One day, Zamasu brings up whether or not mortals are worth protecting, as they seem to be stuck in a cycle of growth and self-destruction. After being admonished by Gowasu and reminded that he still has much to learn, Universe 7's Beerus, Whis, and Son Goku arrive on Gowasu's planet. Zamasu is shocked to see a mortal in the Kaiōshin Realm, and wonders why a Saiyan is accompanying a God of Destruction. After much pestering, Zamasu agrees to spar with Goku and is handily defeated. In direct contrast to Gowasu's intent for allowing the match, Zamasu is left with the impression that mortals are dangerous.
Later, Gowasu notices a change in Zamasu's tea. Zamasu shocks him with the suggestion that a primitive and violent mortal race, the Babarians, should be exterminated. In an effort to guide Zamasu, Gowasu retrieves a Time Ring to travel 1,000 years into the future and witness the development of the Babarians. As only Kaiōshin are qualified to use Time Rings, Gowasu lends Zamasu one of his Potara, but warns him to place it on the correct ear or they'll become permanently fused together into a single being. In the future, the Babarians seem to have developed some but remain a violent race. Zamasu, disgusted by their lawless and unintelligent nature, doubles down on his belief that mortals must be exterminated in order to bring peace to the universe. Zamasu cleaves a charging Barbarian headed his way in two, and the two gods return to the Kaiōshin Realm. Gowasu scolds Zamasu for his actions, explaining that there was no need to kill that Barbarian, and doing so may have negatively affected their race. Zamasu and Gowasu debate the nature of mortals, good and evil, and justice, but Zamasu remains unconvinced by Gowasu's arguments.
Zamasu finds footage of Goku and Hit's match on God-Tube, and wonders how Goku, clad in god ki, is able to wield the power of a god. He sees the Super Dragon Balls floating outside of the arena, and Gowasu explains that they can grant any wish. Zamasu travels to Zuno's planet, demanding answers regarding the Super Dragon Balls and Goku.
From this point onward, Zamasu's existence branches into two outcomes.
Original Present Timeline: Goku Black
Main article: Goku Black
After visiting Zuno, Zamasu murders Gowasu, takes his Potara (enabling the use of a Time Ring), and uses the Super Dragon Balls to trade bodies with Goku. Zamasu immediately travels to Earth and kills Goku and his family. Requiring a partner to execute his vision of eliminating all mortals, Zamasu (now Goku Black) travels to the future with the help of a Time Ring, where he helps a like-minded future version of himself murder the Gowasu of the future. Using the future's Super Dragon Balls, the two wish for Zamasu to be granted immortality, then jump forward a year into the future and wish for the balls to be destroyed beyond repair. Together, they slay the Kaiōshin of each universe, simultaneously eliminating each God of Destruction in the process. Without divine oversight, Goku Black terrorizes the future in an attempt to enact his "0 Mortals Plan", but is met with resistance by Trunks and Mai.
After Trunks escapes to the present timeline, Goku Black attempts to follow after him, but after briefly exchanging blows with Goku in the present, the nature of the Time Ring sucks him back into the future. There, Goku Black notes to himself that "battle memories" are being engraved into his mind and body as he becomes accustomed to Goku's movements and body. Before his next encounter with Goku and Trunks, Goku Black develops the Super Saiyan Rosé transformation, rivaling the power of Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan.
Altered Present Timeline
After visiting Zuno, Zamasu attempts to murder Gowasu, but is caught in the act by Whis. Beerus destroys Zamasu without hesitation. Despite Beerus' insistence that this will solve matters in the future, because of the Time Ring, Goku Black is unaffected.
Zamasu of the Future
This future version of Zamasu shares a similar past as his present-timeline self, but because Son Goku falls prey to a heart virus in his timeline, this Zamasu does not have meeting Goku as a seminal event to trigger a betrayal of Gowasu's teachings. Instead of revolting against Gowasu, Zamasu continues to study and serve under his tutelage for years longer than his present-timeline self. However, Zamasu does share simmering anti-mortal sentiments, and welcomes Goku Black and his ideology upon his arrival. Zamasu watches in shock as Goku Black murders Gowasu, but embraces him.
After being granted immortality, Zamasu remains behind the scenes while Goku Black faces off against Trunks and the others. As Goku Black unveils Super Saiyan Rosé, Zamasu descends from the heavens so that he may be the one to finish off Goku.
Because of his immortality, the Saiyans' attacks have no effect on Zamasu. As they fight, he continues to ramble on about his negative view of mortals. At Piccolo's suggestion, Trunks successfully unleashes the Mafūba against Zamasu, sealing him inside a jar. However, without a talisman, Zamasu is able to break free from the jar. Zamasu warns Goku Black that they cannot let their guard down around these mortals, and they use their Potara to fuse into a single being, who declares himself "the supreme god, Zamasu".
