"The Nightmare is Reborn!! An Absolute and Perfect Terror" is the one hundred and eighty-ninth episode of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Z. The episode first aired in Japan on Fuji TV on 16 June 1993, receiving a ratings share of 19.5%. It was written by Aya Matsui and directed by Hiroki Shibata.
Synopsis
As Gohan and the others are dumbfounded after Cell kills Trunks, Cell explains that the reason he was able to revive was due to his nucleus remaining. What's more, Cell has powered up and reached his perfect form again! Vegeta attacks him, trying to avenge Trunks, but Cell isn't hurt by his rapid-fire attack, and easily beats Vegeta. Shielding Vegeta from Cell's finishing blow, Gohan's left arm is seriously injured!! Cell takes this opportunity to raise his ki, and is about to fire at Gohan.
Summary
Part A
Cell reappears surrounded by a yellow aura and lightning, just like Son Gohan. Everyone looks on, aghast that he somehow survived. The announcer, still forgetting that his microphone is broken, asks aloud where the man that disappeared with Cell went. Cell smiles, seemingly relishing the terror on everyone's faces. On the Serpent Road, Son Goku is incredulous that Cell survived. They saw him explode! Goku is upset that he died for nothing, while Kaiō is upset that he died for nothing and his planet was destroyed. On God's Temple, Dende confirms to Mr. Popo that not only has Cell survived, but that he has emerged more powerful than before. He does not think that even Son Gohan will be able to defeat him.
Cell explains that he survived because a small lump in his head, his nucleus, survived the explosion.[note 1] From that, he was able to regenerate himself. Cell then flashes back to the explosion on Kaiō's Planet. Although the planet and Cell's body were destroyed, his nucleus remained floating in space where Kaiō's planet had been.[note 2] Cell quickly regenerated from that nucleus, discovering that he had returned to his Perfect form, but "like Son Gohan" more powerful than before. Cell hypothesized that he has the Saiyan ability to become more powerful after escaping from near-death. He also realized that he had learned Son Goku's teleportation technique and used that to return to the battlefield. Gohan powers up and tells Cell that he is happy; he is happy because now he can avenge his father's death!
Trunks, badly injured from Cell's blast, coughs up blood and dies. Vegeta is in shock. The world fades out and he sees only his son, dead. Vegeta flashes back to Son Goku's departure and then Trunks's surprise attack. He recalls Gohan being excited to be able to avenge his father, while his own son lies dead. Vegeta snaps and charges at Cell, powering up along the way. With a shout, he fires a powerful ki attack at Cell!
