Summary

At the Omni-King's Palace, the Great Priest tells Whis that he dispatched his angel trainee Merusu to Universe 7 to that he might learn about the way of things and broaden his perspective. Angels must act impartially; beyond that one law, there are no restrictions on their behavior. When Merusu enlisted in the Galactic Patrol, there was no concern because it gave him the opportunity to observe the side of good and virtue, but... Whis says he seems to have gained a bias, and the Great Priest agrees. If Merusu goes any further, he will be in violation of their code; therefore it is necessary to recall him from the mortal realm.

Whis asks the Great Priest if he may retrieve Merusu on his own; the Great Priest does not understand, so Whis explains: since Merusu has only used mortal weapons to fight up to this point, he has not yet used his angel abilities, and at the moment he is merely training Goku. The Great Priest agrees. Whis reminds his father that even he has trained mortals, but the Great Priest says that is because he craved the food on Earth. Whis seems amused that he was so transparent. The Great Priest grants his request; Merusu came perilously close, but he did not violate their laws, so the Great Priest will leave him in Whis's hands. Whis bows, thanking his father, who warns him to keep a close eye on Merusu; he may be a troublemaker, but the Great Priest does not want to lose an angel.

On Planet Yardrat, Iriko tries and fails to contact Galactic Patrol Headquarters. He hopes that everyone is okay. Yardrat falls outside the Galactic Patrol's jurisdiction, so without any way to communicate with headquarters, Iriko and Vegeta have no idea what is going on. Just then, Iriko sees one of the scout ships arrive on Yardrat. Elsewhere, Elder Pybara watches over Vegeta's training. His companion hops over to join him. Meanwhile Vegeta drops, exhausted, from the spire where he had been meditating. Pybara compliments his spirit power; his is more polished than Goku's now, and he managed it quickly. Vegeta takes this as a matter of course; he and Kakarrot are not cut from the same cloth.

Pybara tells Vegeta that it is time to start teaching Vegeta their abilities. This is what Vegeta has been waiting for. Pybara restores his health and his clothes, and Vegeta is surprised that he has a healing ability. The other Yardratian tells him that it is one of Pybara's special techniques. Vegeta asks if he can learn this, but Pybara tells him it is a very advanced technique and he is not at that level. Vegeta asks what he can learn, then, and Pybara says the first, most basic lesson is teleportation. Vegeta is surprised to learn that teleportation is just the basics.

There is a crash in the distance, and Vegeta asks what is going on. Pybara's friend says he is sensing wicked spirits, and Pybara agrees; they have some unpleasant guests. Iriko flies in using his jet boots and tells Vegeta that Moro's goons are here. Vegeta is surprised they came out this far; he prepares to take off to fight them, but Pybara tells him to wait. He is still in training, so he needs to be careful with his power. There is another explosion, and Iriko is getting impatient. Vegeta flies off, and tells Iriko to try to keep up.

In the city, several escaped inmates attack the natives while another man watches. He thinks that Moro will be pleased with this planet, brimming with energy. Iriko tells Vegeta as they land that this is Yuzun, one of Saganbo's minions. Vegeta tells Yuzun that Moro will not be making a meal of this planet. Yuzun recognizes him as the Galactic Patrol member from Namek, and mocks Vegeta for fleeing all the way here. He thinks Moro should know about this, so he reaches for a communicator. Vegeta hurries to stop him, firing a small, targeted blast...but the blast ends up being huge, and even Vegeta dodges it reflexively. It hits Yuzun, charring his clothes and his hair, and reduces the communication device to dust.

Vegeta stares at his hand, wondering what happened. Then Pybara teleports over, reminding Vegeta to be careful about wrecking the planet. Pybara's companion says it is a good thing no one actually lives in this city, but still. Vegeta wants an explanation, though, so Pybara tells him that he just witnessed his own nascent power. Before his training, his body and spirit were so off-balance that he could not project his own power well. Vegeta asks if he has really grown stronger just since he arrived, and Pybara says yes, by leaps and bounds, and as he said before, Vegeta should be careful.

Yuzun's men ask him if he is okay, and he angrily tells him to stop staring and fight back. They attack, but Vegeta knocks them aside easily, sending them flying into buildings. Yuzun panics, but then he gets angry, and promises Vegeta he will not get away with this. And then he transforms. Iriko and Pybara's companion are terrified, and the latter makes more clones of himself. Yuzun is sure that this transformation will give him the edge; Iriko says he has never seen a transformation like that, but Vegeta has, and he is not worried.[a] Yuzun suggests Vegeta try him; maybe he will spare Moro the trouble of killing him.

Vegeta attacks, and his advantage is clear. Yuzun tries lifting a whole building to throw at Vegeta, but Vegeta easily catches it with one hand and tosses it aside. He tells Yuzun to just give up—he is no match for him—but Yuzun has already grabbed up another building, this one a circular towertop that he spins at Vegeta like a wheel. Pybara tells Vegeta that Yuzun has pumped it full of energy to harden it, but Vegeta still easily kicks it back toward Yuzun, who then rebounds it into the air. Then Vegeta kicks him in the gut, knocking him straight through another building. Pybara is upset that Vegeta is still wrecking the place despite his warnings.

Yuzun has lost his transformation, so Vegeta advises him to surrender and go back to Galactic Prison so he does not have to die. He will not allow him to run back to Moro. Yuzun tells him that Moro's next target is not this planet; it is a place called Earth. Vegeta is taken aback, and Yuzun is happy to have flustered him and wonders aloud if Earth is Vegeta's home planet. Iriko flies over to ask if he heard that right; meanwhile, Yuzun has signaled to his companions to get the ship ready, and he tells Vegeta he will be leaving now. As the ship flies past, Yuzun jumps onto its roof. Vegeta moves to shoot them down, but he does not have to; the spinning towertop that Yuzun tossed into the air earlier is coming back down. It hits Yuzun and the ship, destroying everything in a giant explosion.

Iriko asks Vegeta if they should head back to Earth, but Vegeta assures him that Earth is still untouched. Iriko asks how he knows, and Pybara explains that Vegeta's spirit-honing has allowed him to sense other spirits at a great distance. Vegeta tells Pybara that he is short on time, however, and teleportation is not going to bring Moro down. Pybara's companion tells Vegeta to show some respect and call him Pybara-sama,[b] and insists he cannot mess around with the order of the lessons. But Pybara agrees with Vegeta.

Meanwhile, Saganbo and co. are on some unidentified planet collecting loot. Moro observes that Vegeta has truly grown more powerful; Saganbo is surprised that Moro found him, so Moro tells him Vegeta was on the planet where Yuzun went. Now Yuzun is dead. Saganbo is shocked by this; Yuzun is supposed to be unbeatable after he transforms. Moro is pleased at this development, but he wants to take the time to stock up and reach the outer limits of his power before traveling to Earth, assuming he has limits. He orders Saganbo to find him more suitable planets. They continue to travel throughout the galaxy, leaving devoured planets in their wake.

Goku and Vegeta's training progresses until two months have passed. Merusu tells Goku that their time is almost up, and suggests they spar one more time before departing for Earth. Goku thinks this is a good idea, and he says he will have to use everything he has learned. Merusu promises he will not hold back either. They begin to power up, and for a brief moment, a halo is barely visible around Merusu's neck. Then suddenly, both he and Goku are transported outside the time chamber.

Merusu and Goku look around in confusion, and then Whis descends, telling Merusu that is quite enough. Merusu greets him as "brother", confusing Goku further. Whis tells Merusu it has been ages, and Merusu realizes that Whis must have caught wind of what he was up to. Whis reminds him that there are no secrets between angels. Goku says he knew Merusu was weird, but he is an angel? Merusu admits that it is true. Whis reprimands Merusu harshly, reminding him that training must remain only training; clashing at full strength constitutes a battle. Merusu apologizes, but Whis goes on: even more egregious was Merusu's intention to travel to Earth and battle Moro himself. Merusu seems truly surprised that Whis knew this much. Goku recalls that angels are not allowed to fight except in training, and he tells Merusu this explains a lot. Merusu apologizes for keeping it from him. Goku asks what happens if they do fight, and Whis tells him that angels who violate their code are eradicated without a trace. Goku is perplexed; he thought angels could not die. Whis tells him this is the only means by which an angel can be removed from existence. And so, Whis has come to inform Merusu that his time in the mortal realm has come to an end; henceforth he is responsible for Merusu, who should be grateful that he is not taking him straight back to the Great Priest.

Merusu drops his disguise, revealing his angel clothing. He apologizes to Goku for not being able to see it through with him, then reaches out to summon his staff. Merusu tells Goku that he has faith he will defeat Moro, and Goku promises to figure something out. Whis tells Merusu that it is time for them to return to the Heavenly Realm.[c] Whis bids Goku goodbye, and as they depart, Goku thanks Merusu, and then he decides he had better get back to Earth. He looks over at the Galactic Patrol spaceship and realizes that he will have to pilot it himself. Desperately, he tries calling out after Whis, telling him that he cannot do it and begging him to come back. But Whis is long gone.

Notes

  1. Yuzun is the same race as Zarbon and has a similar transformation. The first time Zarbon transformed on the old Planet Namek, it was enough to overcome Vegeta,[1] but then Vegeta gained a near-death power boost and came back to defeat and kill the transformed Zarbon.[2] At the time, even Goku had not yet achieved the Super Saiyan transformation, much less Vegeta, who never transforms in his fight against Yuzun.
  2. Viz adapts this as "Elder Pybara".
  3. When Viz first published this chapter on their simulpub platforms, 天界 (tenkai) was translated as "Angel Realm". Some time between the publication of chapter 66 (where "Angel Realm" was also used) on 20 November 2020 and the time our chapter summary of this chapter was published on 01 December 2020, the term was changed to "Heavenly Realm" in this chapter and in chapter 66.
