Anat is a fictional character in the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Super and its companion manga series written by Toyotarō. Anat makes his debut in Dragon Ball Super Episode 78, broadcast on 12 February 2017 on Fuji TV, as the Kaiōshin of Universe 1.

Biography

Anat, known for his gentle smile, is the Kaiōshin of the universe with the highest mortal level.[1][2]

Zen Exhibition Match

When the Great Priest informs the gods of each universe about the upcoming Tournament of Power, he invites them to attend the Zen Exhibition Match to sate the curiosity of the Omni-King from the future, who has never seen a martial arts tournament. The Great Priest creates an arena in a void that appears to be located beneath the Omni-King's palace, and then brings in the gods from all the other universes to observe the match. Anat is in attendance with Iwen and Awamo, the God of Destruction and Angel of Universe 1.[3] When the second match ends, Anat and the other gods learn that losing universes will be erased in the Tournament of Power, but Universe 1 is exempt as one of the four top-ranked universes.[4]

Bergamo of Universe 9 makes a speech denouncing Son Goku for his role in making the tournament happen. He asks the Omni-Kings to reconsider their plans if he wins his match against Goku, and the Omni-Kings agree. Champa calls out to Universe 1, commenting on their lack of concern. Anat laughs and reminds Champa that they are exempt from the Tournament of Power. Ogma of Universe 5 adds that their high mortal level shows that their diving guidance is good. Ag of Universe 12 believes it also implies that their levels as gods are higher, and Il of Universe 8 says they do not even need to ask about their universes' levels. Champa is annoyed that the exempt universes have nothing to worry about.[5]

Name

Anat's name pun is unknown, but many Kaiōshin appear to have been named after deities, and Anat (アナト/Anato), a violent war-goddess of Ugarit mythology, is a likely source for his name.[6]

Performance

Anat is voiced by Yūsei Oda, whose roles include Catopesra and Giin in Dragon Ball Super. In the FUNimation dub, Anat is voiced by Chris Burnett in his first credited role for the Dragon Ball franchise.
