"The Candidate for Next Kaiōshin of Universe 10, Zamasu" is the seventeenth chapter of the Dragon Ball Super manga series written and illustrated by Toyotarō, with supervision and guidance from original Dragon Ball author Akira Toriyama. It was first published in Japan in the December 2016 issue of Shueisha's V-Jump, with a sale date of 21 October 2016.

Summary

Gowasu and Zamasu watch from the sidelines as the primitive beasts on Planet Babari battle each other. This is how they act now, but what about a thousand years in the future? Will they have evolved beyond this kind of activity? Gowasu takes out a "Time Ring" — which Zamasu appears to have heard of before — and explains that they can use these under special circumstances to visit the future and then return to their exact world as before. Zamasu asks about traveling to the past, but Gowasu explains that this is strictly forbidden and is extremely dangerous. When history is changed via time travel, a different or parallel world is created and a new ring is born. A being from an advanced civilization in Universe 12 had created a method of time travel, and a ring was born from their escapades. Gowasu looks down at the box again, and notices that there are four rings, one more than he last observed. Someone very recently must have traveled into the past and created a parallel world. Pausing for a moment, Zamasu notes that he understands, and wishes to continue with their trip a thousand years into the future to observe the progress of the Babarians. Only Kaiōshin are allowed to time travel, so Gowasu temporarily promotes Zamasu from Kaiō to Kaiōshin with a Potara earring for the trip. They are sure to place the earrings on the same side so as to not inadvertently fuse for eternity; this idea does not seem to amuse Zamasu in the least.

The pair travel into the future, and at first, things seem promising: Gowasu finds shelter, signs of a writing system, and even a musical instrument. Around the corner, however, Zamasu finds that the entire civilization at war with one another, perhaps even worse than before. Zamasu concludes that the universe would indeed be better off without these kinds of beings. Gowasu notices what appears to be an elder about to intervene, but at that moment, the gods are attacked from behind. Zamasu knocks the beastman backward and Gowasu announces that it is time for them to depart. Ignoring him entirely, Zamasu flares with anger and forms an energy blade around his hand. Zamasu slices the alien in half, concluding the attack with a smirk. Gowasu screams at Zamasu that they are leaving; the two immediately return, and Gowasu asks for the earring back along with an explanation of what just transpired. Zamasu explains that these worthless creatures do not deserve to live and wonders why the Kaiōshin exist at all if their only duty is to watch, rather than to use their power to intervene and judge. They must be rational and fair as gods, Gowasu explains. The trip has taken a toll on him, though, and he wishes Zamasu to prepare some tea.

Back on Earth, the heroes are engaged in a massive go-kart (video game!) race. When Vegeta is unable to take a successful turn at high speeds, Beerus finds his opening and takes the lead. The younger Trunks will not stand for this, and tosses a turtle shell to knock the god aside, enabling the future Trunks to secure a win. As Beerus and Whis depart, Goku suggests that they all get some rest in preparation for their next battle against Goku Black. Trunks wishes to help Goku and Vegeta battle, so Vegeta invites Trunks to the gravity room in the morning for training.

Back in Universe 10, Zamasu is reviewing the fight between Goku and Hit on GodTube. Gowasu pops in and finds Zamasu watching the battle, having specifically searched for "Son Goku". Zamasu deflects this inquiry, instead noting how even the Omni-King made an appearance at the tournament. Zamasu delicately inquires about the floating objects above the tournament; Gowasu explains that these are likely the Super Dragon Balls which are capable of granting any wish.

As the younger Trunks pulls himself out of bed, the future Trunks is already hard at work sparring with Vegeta inside the gravity chamber. Goku meditates alone, floating above a pond, as Beerus also stumbles himself awake. Shin also makes an appearance to request a moment with Beerus; in turn, Beerus demands to know if any other gods might be particularly extreme in their mindset. Whis expands on this, suggesting perhaps a god who may be interested in the extermination of all humans…? Kaiōshin pauses and notes that he might be familiar with someone like that. Goku hops in as Kaiōshin answers the question: Kibito! None other than Kibito, Shin's attendant, has said discriminatory things about humans! (Such as them not being allowed to set foot on the Kaiōshin world… which Whis explains is perhaps not quite so extreme to the degree they were thinking.) Beerus wants to follow up on this lead, but Whis receives a transmission from the Great Priest: the Omni-King wishes to see Goku right this moment! Goku does not particularly want to go, especially since the trip will take Whis two days. Shin can simply teleport them there, however, saving a great deal of time. Beerus sends Whis along with them, as well, aggressively reminding Goku to be on his best behavior and not mention anything about this "Goku Black" character. Finally, Beerus sternly demands that Shin not die.

The group departs and are greeted by the Great Priest; Goku, in turn, exclaims, "Heya, I'm Son Goku!"

Beerus is seen practicing the racing video game by himself while the others are sleeping. (Present) Trunks is close by, brushing his teeth in his pajamas, unamused by the fact that the God of Destruction would take his loss so seriously.

Continuity

The events of the manga and the anime diverge significantly. Below are the main differences, along with the episodes where the events of this chapter occur or contrast.

  • In the manga, Gowasu specifies that it has been 400 years since he last used a Time Ring.
  • Gowasu never mentions the alternate timeline created by the Universe 12 time-traveler in the anime (something that will later become an important plot point in Chapter 26).
  • The scene where the characters all play the go-kart game is absent from the anime.
  • One of the major differences between the manga and the anime versions of Dragon Ball Super is the reason why Zamasu decided to exchange bodies with Goku:
    • In the manga, Zamasu hears from Shin how Goku helped to defeat Majin Boo, a feat that the Kaiōshin himself could not do. Later, Zamasu looks for footage of Goku on "GodTube" and happens upon a video of his fight with Hit (a scene that is also present in the anime, albeit in a slightly different context). Zamasu grows both outraged with and fascinated by the fact that a mere mortal could surpass a Kaiōshin and even approach the level of a God of Destruction, which made him start thinking about exchanging his body for Goku’s.
    • In the anime, however, Goku tags along with Whis and Beerus to the Universe 10 Kaiōshin Realm, where they intended to investigate whether Zamasu had any relation to Black. When they make it there, Goku cannot contain himself and begs Zamasu to spar for a bit. Zamasu refuses at first, believing it to be beneath him, but Gowasu orders him to humor Goku. During the match, Zamasu gets a first-hand taste of the Saiyan's power. It is from this point forward that Zamasu starts becoming both outraged with and fascinated by Goku, and starts plotting to take his body for himself.
      • The scene where Zamasu watches footage of Goku’s battle with Hit on GodTube is also a bit different in both versions. In the anime, Zamasu enters Gowasu’s room to serve him some tea when he notices that his master is watching footage of the God of Destruction Invitational Tournament on his television. In the manga, however, it is precisely the opposite: Zamasu himself searched for “Son Goku” on GodTube, where he happened upon the footage. Gowasu then enters the room while Zamasu is watching the video. The scene is otherwise more or less the same in both versions.
  • In the anime, Vegeta trains Trunks outside, rather than in the Capsule Corp. Gravity Room.
  • In the manga, the Omni-King calls Whis through the Great Priest. In the anime, however, he calls Whis personally.

Notes

  • The self-insert video game being played in this chapter is most likely a reference to Nintendo's Mario Kart series: besides the fact that the game also allows for the throwing of turtle shells, the group appears to be playing on Wii U controller/tablet pads.
    • The turtle shells used in the game come complete with the 亀 (kame, "turtle") kanji written on them.

Adaptation

Gowasu notices that the number of Time Rings has increased.

Important notes on the Viz English adaptation of this chapter:

  • Gowasu does not specify that there is only one new Time Ring in the original Japanese dialogue. He mentions only that the number of rings has increased. Due to the lack of a true plural form in the Japanese language, the term he uses for "timeline" (世界, sekai, literally meaning "world") could be either singular or plural. Viz adapts it as explicitly singular: "They've increased in number since the last time I checked...! No way... someone must have created another new universe recently...". According to the established time travel lore, there should have been three new Time Rings created since the last time Gowasu checked the box (400 years ago).
    • Gowasu does, however, specify that there is "one" new Time Ring in Episode 54:

上の段の指輪は数年前に1つ増えたばかりでなまた別の世界をつくった者がいるようで。
A new ring was added to the top row just a few years ago. Apparently, someone created another world.

  • Goku refers to the Omni-King as 全王さん (Zen'ō-san), as opposed to the much more formal and deferential 全王様 (Zen'ō-sama), causing Beerus to spit up his drink. Viz adapts this as "Zenny" in their English translation of the manga. This is separate from the extremely informal "Zen-chan" nickname that Goku will use later in the next chapter, which Funimation adapts as "Zenny" in the anime. (Viz opted to just keep "Zen-chan".)
