"At Long Last, the Dragon Appears!" is the eleventh episode of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball. The episode first aired in Japan on Fuji TV on 07 May 1986, receiving a ratings share of 24.6%. The episode was written by Yasushi Hirano and directed by Daisuke Nishio.

Synopsis

After being put to sleep by sleeping gas, Goku and the others have the Four-Star Ball stolen from them! Pilaf finally has all seven Dragon Balls, and he attempts to call forth Shenlong!! In order to stop Pilaf's scheme, Goku uses the Kamehameha to open a hole in the wall of the room that they are imprisoned in! As Pu'er and Oolong transform into bats and head out the hole to take back the Dragon Balls, Shenlong is finally summoned! Will the world become Pilaf's...?!

Summary

Part A

At Pilaf's Castle, Mai and Shuu search Yamcha's car, looking for the Four-Star Ball, but they cannot find it. Inside the castle, Bulma notes that they are completely trapped. Oolong complains that he warned them they should not go inside the castle. Goku is just confused; he asks what happened to them, and Bulma explains that they fell into a trap (罠 wana). Goku does not know what that is, and asks Oolong if it is some kind of banana (バナナ banana). Bulma tells him it means that they have been captured. Finally he understands, and Bulma says he is driving her crazy.

Mai suggests looking between Yamcha's legs.

In the control room, Pilaf gleefully anticipates his impending rise to power. Mai and Shuu rush in to tell him that the last Dragon Ball was not inside the car. Pilaf realizes that one of the prisoners must have it on their person, but they do not seem to be carrying anything, so he says that it does not look like they have any balls. Mai suggests that he look between Yamcha's legs; Pilaf and Shuu both look at her blankly for some time, and Pilaf reminds her that he does not like crude jokes, so she apologizes.

Yamcha prepares to attack the walls with his Roga fufu ken, while Goku prepares to attack with Jan-ken. Their attacks are ineffective; Yamcha tries again frantically, but Goku just looks at his fist in confusion. Yamcha complains that the walls are too solid, and Goku says even his punches do not work. Just then, Pilaf appears on a small screen inside their cell, laughing. He tells them that their punches would never be able to break his walls. Bulma demands to know who he is; he tells them he is the Great King Pilaf, and Bulma realizes he must be the one who stole their Dragon Balls. He confirms this, and complains that he is still missing one. Goku asks Yamcha if they can break that window and escape through it, but Yamcha tells him not to be silly; it is a television screen.

Bulma gives Pilaf the bird. This bit was excised on the Trimark release of Funimation's 1995 dub.

Pilaf pushes a button to change his surveillance views. He tells them that he knows they have the ball with four stars, and demands they hand it over, or else. Bulma taunts him, telling him they will never give him anything and sticking out her tongue at him. Pilaf is incensed. He puts his hand on a lever and informs Bulma that he is going to do something "dirty" (H ecchi) to her. He pulls the lever, sending a robotic arm inside the prison cell to grab Bulma. Yamcha is afraid for her, and Goku wants to know what ecchi means. Oolong is excited, though. The robotic arm presents Bulma to Pilaf. She kicks and screams at Pilaf, asking what he is planning to do to her, and demanding he let her go. He assures her that she still has time to avoid her fate and demands to know where the last Dragon Ball is. She flips him off and says she will never tell him anything. Pilaf cannot believe she wants to be humiliated, but he will do what she wants.

From the prison cell, Yamcha watches the television screen, encouraging Bulma to endure this torture, while Oolong watches with anticipation. Pilaf puts his hand over his mouth, while Mai and Shuu retract in horror at what he is about to do. Mai begs him to stop, but he steps forward, blowing Bulma a kiss. A small heart forms, traveling through the air until it bursts near Bulma's face. Mai and Shuu are embarrassed, and even Pilaf is blushing. He asks Bulma if she is ready to talk. She asks him what exactly it was that he did, and he informs her with a shaking voice that he blew her a kiss. She says she cannot believe that was all he did, and Pilaf is shocked. Yamcha is proud that she managed to endure the torture. Goku is confused, and Oolong is disappointed. Bulma tells Pilaf that she thought he was going to strip her and do a hero-hero, pafu-pafu, kyoi-kyoi, or even an inguri-monguri.

Pilaf decides that Bulma is dangerously depraved and sends her back to the cell. When the robotic arm dumps her on the floor, Yamcha congratulates her for enduring the torture, and Oolong deflates. Pilaf is disappointed that his torture did not work, and Shuu remarks that girls these days are more progressive (進んでます) than they used to be. Mai suggests using the sleeping gas, and Pilaf enthusiastically agrees, ordering her to execute immediately.

The moon is full outside Pilaf's Castle.

Two vents underneath the television screen begin to release gas into the cell. Oolong and Yamcha cover their noses, and Pu'er flies to the ceiling, but the cell fills up and no one can hide. Bulma asks what this smoke is, and Goku announces he is feeling sleepy. Yamcha starts to agree, but he and Oolong suddenly collapse. When the gas clears, everyone is asleep. The wall that trapped them raises again, and Pilaf enters the cell. He observes that they are all asleep, and announces that he will now take their Dragon... Ball... His eyes droop, and he collapses to the floor. Mai and Shuu, in gas masks, find him this way. Mai notes that Pilaf forgot his mask, so she tells Shuu to take care of him while she finds the ball. She searches Oolong, then Yamcha, then Goku. She flips him over and finds a ball tied at his back. She pulls it out of its sack and holds it up in awe. The Four-Star Ball fades to become the full moon outside the castle.

Back in the heart of the castle, Pilaf dreams. He holds one Dragon Ball in his hands, but he falls, and the ball bursts to become seven. All the while, Mai is calling for him, and eventually he opens his eyes. Mai informs him that they have all seven Dragon Balls. He stands up, and she opens his special case. The magical glow of the Dragon Balls reaches outside the castle's windows.

Part B

Yamcha wakes up to this after being gassed.

Back in the cell, Bulma wakes up from her gas-induced nap. Immediately, she notices the empty sack that held Goku's Four-Star Ball. She panics, and leans over Yamcha to wake Goku. Yamcha wakes first, and his first sight is of Bulma's breasts, hanging right over his face. He screams and flattens himself against the nearest wall, and Bulma asks him what is wrong. Pu'er wakes up, and then Goku finally wakes up, asking what is going on and why they are being so loud. Bulma shows him the empty sack and tells him that his Dragon Ball was stolen, and he yells for his Grandpa. Bulma cries, imagining that they have already made a wish. Then Pu'er points out that their cell is open again. Oolong wakes up and asks what is going on, while Bulma and Goku look at the dark hallway behind him. Pu'er was right; they can get out!

The Pilaf Gang marches through the castle halls, Shuu carrying the Dragon Balls. At a crossroads, they meet Goku and the gang, escaped from their cell. Pilaf sweats as the two groups stare at each other. Bulma asks if they have made a wish, and Pilaf shakes his hand. Goku angrily demands that they return his Grandpa. The Pilaf Gang runs, and after a moment, Yamcha yells at everyone to chase them. They come to an area with several hallways leading in different directions and they pause, considering which way to turn.

This pinball escapade is an anime-only adventure.

Back in the control room, Pilaf pushes some buttons for his surveillance screens and asks what the prisoners were doing out. Mai blames Shuu for leaving the cell door open, but Shuu points out she was the last to leave. Pilaf chastises both of them, and then complains that he has such stupid underlings. He pulls a lever to release a piano keyboard, and tells his minions to watch. He strikes one key, producing a dissonant organ sound, and a traveling wall pushes Goku and the gang into a giant pinball game. Pilaf plays nonsense noise on the keyboard, and the ball chases Goku and the others around the game while they frantically dodge. Goku tries punching the ball, but it crushes him into a wall. Yamcha gestures for all of them to run through the door that the ball came through. They run through a maze of hallways while the ball chases them. They manage to hide in a crook while the ball passes, but then Oolong yells insults at it, and it comes back. Bulma chews him out, but he protests that he had no way of knowing that would happen. They run through the maze again, the ball in pursuit, until they reach an open room. A giant ball hides behind a curtain on the other end. The curtain rises, and spotlights shine on the ball. Everyone screams, Pilaf plays the organ, and the ball chases Goku and gang to a dead-end hallway. The ball quickly approaches, and everyone screams again. Just before the moment of impact, the ball stops, and retreats. Then the wall falls back down, trapping them in their cell again. Bulma yells out, and Pilaf taunts them on the television screen. He informs them that this was all a prelude to the granting of his wish, and bids them farewell.

Oolong and Pu'er do not make it in time to steal a Dragon Ball.

Outside, the Pilaf Gang emerges into the light of the full moon, and they see a shooting star. Inside, Bulma bangs her fists against the wall and curses their hopeless situation. Yamcha tells Goku he should use the Kamehameha that he learned from Muten Rōshi. Goku thinks that is a great idea, but he wonders how Yamcha knew about it. Yamcha tells him not to worry about that, and get on with it. Back outside, Pilaf has gathered the Dragon Balls to summon Shenlong. Mai and Shuu wait nervously. Inside, Goku charges the Kamehameha. He only manages to blow a small hole through the wall; with a nervous laugh, he explains that he has not trained enough yet. Yamcha looks through the hole and notices that the Pilaf Gang is outside. Bulma rushes to join him, and Yamcha tells everyone that it does not look like the Dragon has appeared yet. He tells Pu'er to transform into a bat and steal the Dragon Balls. Bulma loves this idea, and Pu'er does as commanded, flying out of the hole. Bulma tells Oolong to be useful for a change and help Pu'er, or she will give him diarrhea again. He transforms and rushes after Pu'er.

Meanwhile, Pilaf summons Shenlong. The sky grows dark, lightning strikes the balls, and then Shenlong comes out and begins to form. Pu'er and Oolong cower. Yamcha gapes. Pilaf shakes with excitement. Shenlong has been summoned at last. Will the world fall to Pilaf?!

Funimation's 1995 dub was contracted out to BLT Productions in Vancouver, who hired Canadian voice actors typically associated with Ocean Group. Funimation redubbed the series in the early 2000s with their in-house cast.
