"Burn Up!! A Red-Hot, Raging, Super-Fierce Fight" is the eighth theatrical film of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Z. The movie premiered as part of the 1993 Winter "Toei Anime Fair" on 6 March 1993, alongside a Dr. Slump film. It was written by series composer Takao Koyama and directed by Shigeyasu Yamauchi.

Synopsis

Vegeta travels to the planet New Vegeta in search of the Legendary Super Saiyan, who has been destroying planets. Son Goku is also in pursuit of the Legendary Super Saiyan, teleports to the planet, and Broli goes berserk. Goku must defeat the Legendary Super Saiyan… to save the universe!!

Summary

Prologue

The South Galaxy is attacked by a Super Saiyan and the light from its stars quickly fades from view. On his planet, Kaiō is in a panic as he fears that how own North Galaxy may be destroyed soon as well.

Film

Goku and Chi-Chi stand in line for their appointment.

The Turtle Hermit drunkenly entertains his friends at a Hanami party.

In a city strewn with errant cherry blossom petals, Son Goku and Chi-Chi stand in line wearing their best clothes. Their mission is to make a good impression so that Son Gohan can attend a prestigious cram school. Goku is impatient, but Chi-Chi says they could be waiting for at least two more hours, plus he has to do it just like they practiced. Chi-Chi tries asking Goku for his hobbies, and he replies that he enjoys fighting. Chi-Chi scolds him, reminding him that he must respond that his hobbies are reading and sports. Some distance away, Goku's friends are relaxing Hanami party, celebrating the arrival of spring. The Turtle Hermit is quite drunk, but he demonstrate his prowess spinning plates while Dr. Brief, Bulma's Mother, Kuririn, Gohan, Oolong, Bulma, and baby Trunks look on. Even Bulma is impressed!

Back waiting in line, Chi-Chi is still grilling Goku on the answers to her interview questions. Goku successfully answers about his hobbies, but fails to know his three favorite words ("Friendship", "Effort", and "Victory"). At the park, Goku's friends are enjoying karaoke with Kuririn singing. While some of his friends are quite impressed with Kuririn's vocal style, others seem less certain. Vegeta and Future Trunks have arrived as well and while Trunks is impressed by his voice, Vegeta silently vows revenge against the singer. Suddenly, a spaceship lands in the park. Kuririn continues singing as a group of armored troopers emerge and surround Vegeta. Their leader approaches and introduces himself as Paragus, another Saiyan. It is not until his song is over that Kuririn realizes that all of his friends have disappeared.

In the middle of his family's interview, Goku is contacted by Kaiō: something terrible has happened! He tells Goku that even the Earth is in danger and that he must come to his planet at once. Goku is given the all-important question about his hobbies, but he struggles to remember the answer. He apologies and explains that something has come up before teleporting away, much to the shock of the interviewees. He arrives at Kaiō's planet and quickly sheds his suit, revealing his customary orange gi underneath. Before Kaiō can explain the situation, Goku asks for something to eat.

At the park, Paragus asks Vegeta to come to New Planet Vegeta and rule over them as king. He explains that with Vegeta as their leader, the Saiyan race can once again become a glorious empire! Vegeta dismisses them and walks away. Paragus then reveals his real reason for coming: Vegeta is the only person who can defeat the Legendary Super Saiyan. This Saiyan has been destroying the Southern Galaxy and soon even New Planet Vegeta will be destroyed. Only someone like Vegeta can save the planet from destruction. Trunks yells that the story is obviously a lie, but Vegeta is intrigued and agrees to help Paragus and his people. Surprisingly, Paragus knows about "Prince" Trunks as well and invites him to join his father. After Vegeta boards Paragus's ship, the Turtle Hermit decides in his drunken stupor that he wants to come too. Gohan, Oolong, and Kuririn try to hold him back but he is able to get onto the boarding ramp before it is closed. At the last moment, Future Trunks promises his mother that he will bring his father home before flying into the closing hatch. The ship takes off for New Planet Vegeta.

After Goku eats, Kaiō explains the situation. He believes that this new power may be even stronger than Goku and his friends. Goku is elated! Kaiō instructs Goku to head to the Southern Galaxy. Goku mentally searches for a Saiyan ki before realizing that he doesn't know what direction is south! Kaiō points him in the right direction and he tries again. He finds a weak Saiyan ki, but when he travels there he finds only a destroyed planet. Goku realizes that whomever destroyed the planet must have been very powerful to have left so much ki behind.

Meanwhile, Paragus's ship lands on New Planet Vegeta. He explains that it has been 30 years since Freeza destroyed Planet Vegeta and that he has been trying to rebuild the Saiyan civilization ever since. He claims that bringing Vegeta here was a way that he could repay his father, King Vegeta. When they arrive at the palace, a group of soldiers from throughout the galaxy hail Vegeta as their new king. Paragus also introduces Vegeta to his son, Broly, and instructs Vegeta that he may use him however he wishes. Broly appears to be a scrawny man and quite shy. A soldier runs up and interrupts, announcing that the Super Saiyan has been seen on Planet Totokama. Vegeta announces that he will set off at once and asks to take Broly with him. Trunks yells at his father to be more cautious, but he is ignored. Vegeta and Broly take off for Planet Totokama while the Turtle Hermit and the others remain on New Planet Vegeta.

Gohan, Trunks, and Kuririn do not trust Paragus's story and fly off to explore the planet. They find it largely destroyed except for the area where they first visited. Gohan questions why they would build a new Planet Vegeta on this sort of place until Trunks discovers that they are using slaves to harness energy from the planet and direct it back to the castle. The group descends and talks to one of the slaves and his grandfather. He explains that they were brought here after the "Super Saiyan" destroyed their planet. He claims that Sayians are the devils of the universe. Just then, one of the guards appears and whips the boy, called Shamo, for slacking off. Gohan attacks the guard and he summons reinforcements, surrounding the boy. Kuririn threatens the guards and they all leave. Just then Goku appears! He is shocked to find his friends on the planet; he had made it there while searching for the mysterious Saiyan ki. Kuririn catches him up on the plot so far, but they are interrupted by Paragus who knows who Son Goku is, including his Saiyan birth name and that is the son of Bardock. Goku at first is suspicious, but Paragus offers him dinner and he readily agrees to come along. Goku and his friends tuck into their feast. Some time later, Kuririn, Trunks, and Gokan share food from their feast with Shamo and his family.

Back at the castle, Paragus cackles with glee as he seems to summon the Comet Gumori. A slave, Moa, seems worried but Paragus laughs and tells him that he will not need to experience the terror of the comet. Moa thinks this means that he will be taken to Earth, but Paragus laughs again and kills him. Vegeta and Broly then return from Totokama, but report no sign of the Legendary Super Saiyan. Vegeta sees Goku but tells him not to interfere; Vegeta will be the one to defeat this mysterious Saiyan threat. Broly starts to pass Goku in the hall but stops, becoming quickly enraged. The gem in his forehead begins to glow as Paragus looks on from afar. Paragus uses a controller on his wrist which seems to calm Broly, but not right away. Just then, the Turtle Hermit, drunk again, and Oolong appear and ask to be taken home.

Later in the evening, Paragus sits alone in a room with a large computer, wires connected to his hands. He is told by one of his servants that they have collected enough ki and that he can once again control Broli's power using the device. He reflects to himself that Broli has become less controllable; could it be due to Son Goku's presence unlocking his Saiyan instincts?

Paragus flashes back many years, to prior to the destruction of Planet Vegeta. He and a much younger Broli were conquering a planet but Broli's rage became uncontrollable and he destroyed the planet completely before turning on his father as well. Paragus had a restraint created by his scientists to keep his son under control. He tried to sneak it on his son while he slept, but Broli woke and fight him to keep from being controlled. Paragus just barely managed to take control of his son before he would have been killed. BUt now that he had harnessed his son's latent power, he could be the one to control the universe. He also reflects that Broli and Goku were born on the same day. He flashes back to the nursery where Broli already has a huge battle power, while Goku only has a battle power of 2. Nonetheless, Goku's cries upset Broli who is in the crib next door. As Paragus leaves his son, he thinks that if he is unable to control Broli then the universe may be destroyed. In the room behind him, Broki screams: "Kakarrot!"

In the castle, Goku and his friends sleep. Broli has managed to escape from his father's cell and attacks Goku, but the Saiyan is able to wake up and dodge at the last moment. Broli chases Goku out of the castle. Just then, Paragus wakes up and grabs his controller. Goku and Broli's fight spills out of the castle and into a forest, then beyond to a lake. Goku is impressed that Broli can scale his power just like he and his friends can. Goku manages to draw the first blood, but Broli just laughs it off. He begins to power up, but just then Paragus arrives. Goku recognizes Broli's ki as the one that destroyed the South Galaxy. Broli just laughs as Paragus tries to take control of his son. Broli eventually powers down and submits to his father. The pair return to the castle while Goku looks on. High above, a comet draws ever closer.

The following day, Vegeta attempts to leave the planet as Paragus begs him to stay. Goku is already at his ship and tells him that there is no reason to go: Broli is the Legendary Super Saiyan. Paragus denies it. Trunks flies in and reveals that the planet is a sham, that they are surrounded by ruins that are made to look like a city by Paragus's captured slaves. Shamo points out that Broli is the one that destroyed their planet and Paragus realizes that his ruse is over. He reveals that his only interest in this planet is that it is is about to be destroyed by a comet. His real goal has been Earth in the North Galaxy all along. As early has the best climate of all of the planets in the universe, Paragus wants to conquer it and use it as the capital of his new empire. He did not want to risk a major battle marring his new capital world, so moving everyone to New Planet Vegeta and having them all be destroyed by a comet was a win-win.

Seeing Goku, Broki once again escapes from his father's control and powers up. As he advances on Goku, Vegeta attacks but Broli just shrugs off his attacks without seeming to notice them. Paragus decides that it's a good thing that Broli is attacking as it will save them from having to wait for the comet to kill them. Even so, his control system is blinking and he looks concerned. If Broli continues to raise his ki, he will destroy the planet. Paragus tries to stop him, but Broli is out of his control. The controller breaks as Broli transforms into a muscular Super Saiyan with green-tinged hair. Broli says that Goku will be the first one to die. Gohan appears to defend his father, but both Saiyans quickly retreat. Vegeta powers down and looks on at Broki, shocked to discover the "Legendary Super Saiyan". Paragus tells him that he is right to be fearful, but even Paragus's plans have to come to an end now. Broli can no longer be controlled.

Paragus reveals that he wanted to get revenge on Vegeta's father, King Vegeta. The elder Vegeta saw Broli as a threat to his rule and attempted to kill both Paragus and the infant Broli. They were still barely alive when Freeza destroyed the planet hours later, but Broli's immense potential kept the pair from being destroyed even as the planet that they were on disintegrated.

Goku, Trunks, and Gohan continue their battle against Broli. The "Legendary" Saiyan tells them that if they do not fight seriously, he will destroy the planet. A distraught Vegeta shouts that there is no way they can win. The four warriors continue to fight and Broli is glad that they are really trying now. Goku seems impressed by his strength and says that it's time to begin "round two". Suddenly, the Turtle Hermit arrives with the slaves, Oolong, and Kuririn. Unexpectedly, he powers up to his Max Power form and challenges Broli. He prepares a Max Power Kamehameha before switching into a comedy routine as a means of distracting the powerful Saiyan... except that it's not strategy at all and he's still drunk. Broli sees the slaves from Planet Shamo and tells them that they will never see their home again. He launches a ki blast at them but redirects it at the last moment to the Planet Shamo, visible and not from from New Planet Vegeta. He destroys the planet instantly.

The group resumes their battle as Kuririn and the other flee. Broli focus on Gohan, knocking him through a building and unconscious. Next, Trunks is taken out of commission before he settles into Goku. Goku manages to dodge many of the ki blasts, but Broli is able to launch him into a building as well. All three Saiyans are depowered back to their base forms, unconscious. The combat is helping Broli to unlock more of his ki and he flies off, the waves of energy pouring off his body smashing into the castle and spaceship. Kuririn laments that was their only way home.

Broli launches a ki blast at the unconscious Gohan, but it is deflected at the last moment. Piccolo has arrived! He rescues Gohan and feeds him a senzu to recover, before repeating the process for Goku and Trunks. Piccolo reveals that he was able to listen in on the telepathic conversation between Goku snd Kaio, but that he could not get there faster as he does not practice teleportation.

Based on the cherry blossoms in the trees, this film likely takes place in May or April of Age 767. Daizenshuu 6 places the film between May 17 and May 26, during the lead-up to the Cell Games, but during the chronology of the movie Cell is not mentioned.

Tidbits

• The Turtle Hermit's compliment that Kuririn's singing is "the best in Japan" is an anachronism. Japan is not a country in the Dragon World.
• The paperwork for Gohan's entrance into cram school avoids providing his birthdate or age but does establish that Son Goku's Mount Paozu home is located in "District 439, N018 East". This does not align with other coordinate systems provided in the anime or manga.
• Paragus explains that Freeza destroyed Planet Vegeta "30 years ago" in Age 737. This is consistent with other dates given in the series.
• Piccolo is able to listen in on the telepathic conversations between Goku and Kaio. This ability is not explained, although could be a side effect if he merged with God in this timeline.
• It is not revealed how Piccolo traveled to New Planet Vegeta in only one day, except that he did not use Teleportation. The ships created by Earth and Namek would have taken multiple days to travel all the way from the North Galaxy to the South.
