Shamo is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball universe by Akira Toriyama. He was a young alien that was rescued by Son Gohan and his friends in Dragon Ball Z Movie 8, written by Takao Koyama.
Biography
Shamo was first encountered by Son Gohan and his friends in Age 767. Prior to that point, he had been enslaved by Paragus and forced to build and collect energy on New Planet Vegeta. It is unknown whether he was born on his "home" Planet Shamo, however he was given that as his namesake. It is possible that he was born in captivity and was given that name as an act of rebellion or it could be a common name for his people. Shamo and his people were freed by Son Goku in Age 767, but not prior to his homeland being destroyed by Broli. It is not revealed what happened to Shamo after the events of the film.
Name
Shamo is likely named for a "shamo", type of Japanese chicken used for cockfighting. Alternatively, it may derive from inverting the Japanese expression mosha-mosha, “shaggy” or “bushy”, which describes his hair, or be a combination of both.
