Gine is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball franchise. Initially only named and described by Akira Toriyama in an interview, Gine makes her formal debut in the "Dragon Ball Minus" bonus chapter of Jaco the Galactic Patrolman as the mother of Son Goku (née "Kakarrot") and Raditz.

Biography

History

A long time ago, Gine fought on a four-person team together with Bardock. Gine was not cut out for being a warrior (being repeatedly saved from danger by Bardock), and transitions to working at a meat distribution center on Planet Vegeta. Though normally Saiyans do not have much of a notion for romance or marriage, a special bond forms between Gine and Bardock. The two produced two sons: Raditz and Kakarrot. Though they shared this special relationship, the family of Gine, Bardock, Raditz, and Kakarrot were never together.

Dragon Ball Minus

Bardock returns to Gine, the mother of his two sons, suspicious of Freeza's motivations for calling all Saiyans back to Planet Vegeta. Gine informs Bardock that Raditz is off on a faraway planet with the prince, Vegeta, while Kakarrot has been in an incubator for three years. Bardock tells Gine he plans to steal a space pod at night so they can launch Kakarrot to a different planet. Gine angrily questions Bardock, saying that being an infiltration baby is dangerous, though seemingly relents when Bardock tells her of his suspicions.

With Kakarrot and space pod in tow, Gine mentions to Bardock that it is unlike him to be worried about his child; Bardock responds that he must have gotten it from Gine, who he says is a softy. Bardock has programmed the pod to go to a distant planet named Earth. They will be unable to go with him, since the army's scouters would sense them. From outside the pod, Gine tells Kakarrot that, if Bardock is wrong, they will come get him as soon as they can. Additionally, he should not look up at the moon for too long, and to watch out for the Galactic Patrol.

Name

Gine's name is likely an anagram of the Japanese word for spring roll or green onion (ネギ, negi).

Production

Gine was initially revealed in the "Akira Toriyama-sensei Super Q&A!!" within the Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock "Super Kanzenban" (packaged with the March 2014 issue of Saikyō Jump), where Gine's history and relationship with Bardock are described by Akira Toriyama. The character formally debuted two months later in the "Dragon Ball Minus" bonus chapter of Jaco the Galactic Patrolman.

Performance

Gine is played in video games by Naoko Watanabe, who also plays Pu'er and is the second (and current) voice of Chi-Chi.

Thus far, Gine appears exclusively in the "Dragon Ball Minus" bonus chapter of Jaco the Galactic Patrolman. Gine has appeared in the video games Dragon Ball Heroes and Dragon Ball Fusions.
