Son Goku is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball manga series by Akira Toriyama. Goku makes his debut in chapter 1, published in the 1984 #51 issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump.

Biography

Son Goku was born on the Planet Vegeta in Age 737, under the name of Kakarrot. He was sent to Earth as in infant and adopted by a man named Son Gohan, who gave him the name Son Goku. Gohan raised Goku as his grandson and trained him in the martial arts. Goku and Gohan lived a peaceful life together until an accident involving Goku's Ōzaru form resulted in Gohan's death.

On 01 September, Age 749, Goku met Bulma, a teenage girl in search of the Dragon Balls, one of which, the Four Star Ball, belonged to Gohan before he died. Bulma told him that when all seven balls were gathered a Dragon would be summoned to grant the possessor a single wish. On the journey to gather all the Dragon Balls, Goku and Bulma were joined by Oolong, Yamcha and Pu'er. On 09 September, the group were taken hostage by Pilaf, who stole the Dragon Balls and summoned Shenlong. However, Oolong was able to get a wish in before Pilaf and the group were sentenced to death in a room that would cook them alive in the sun's rays. The transparent ceiling of the room allowed Goku a clear view of the full moon that night allowing his Ōzaru form to wreak havoc upon Pilaf's castle. Once Goku's allies were clear of the castle wreckage, Yamcha took the opportunity to remove Goku's tail, returning him back to his normal state.

On 10 September, Goku went his separate ways from the others to train under Muten Rōshi, Gohan's former master who he had met during the quest for the Dragon Balls. Alongside Rōshi's other apprentice Kuririn, he trained for the 21st Tenka'ichi Budōkai taking place on 07 May, Age 750. Goku made it all the way to the final round of the tournament where he was defeated by Jackie Chun. Inspired to become even stronger following his loss, Goku set out on a mission to search for Gohan's Dragon Ball which had scattered following the previous wish. Also searching for the Dragon Balls were the Red Ribbon Army, entire squadrons of which were single-handedly destroyed by Goku. As the army became desperate they hired Tao Pai-pai, the world's greatest assassin, who managed to kill Goku's new friend Bora and severely wounded Goku. In order to become strong enough to defeat the assassin, Goku climbed Karin Tower and received training from Karin, allowing him to defeat Tao Pai-pai in a revenge match. Goku then stormed the Red Ribbon Army's main base, destroying what little remained of them. Having gathered all seven Dragon Balls, Goku was able to use them to restore Bora's life, making sure to get his hands on the Four Star Ball before it scattered with the others.

After three years of training on his own, Goku attended the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai on 07 May, Age 753, where he reunited with his old friends. In addition to Goku and his friends, Tenshinhan and Chiaotzu, apprentices of Muten Rōshi's rival, Tsuru-Sen'nin, had also entered the tournament. Not only that, but Tsuru-Sen'nin was also the brother of Tao Pai-pai, and swore revenge on Goku when he discovered that he had killed his brother. However, as the tournament progressed, Jackie Chun's words of wisdom got to Tenshinhan, causing him to rebel against Tsuru-Sen'nin during his finals match with Goku. The match was a close one, with Tenshinhan winning by a nose. Shortly after the tournament's conclusion, Kuririn was murdered by a monster who took the Four Star Ball. Goku hastily chased after the monster, which eventually lead him to a confrontation with the King of Demons, Piccolo Daimaō. After a humiliating defeat, Goku returned for more training with Karin and risked his life by drinking the Super God Water which would either increase his power exponentially, or kill him. Surviving the Super God Water, Goku went to face off against Piccolo once again, who had restored his youth with the Dragon Balls before subsequently killing the Dragon. Goku eventually won the fight using an attack which he poured all his remaining energy into to pierce through Piccolo's torso.

Following this battle, Goku returned to Karin's who told him to go above the tower to God's palace. After riding the Nyoi-Bō there, he is told that in his dying moments Piccolo released an offspring containing his essence, meaning that he was not truly dead. In exchange for three years of training at the palace for the rematch with Piccolo, God agreed to resurrect the Dragon so that the Dragon Balls may be used to save those killed by Piccolo and his men.

Three years later on 07 May, Age 756, Goku enrolled in the 23rd Tenka'ichi Budōkai, where in the first round he fought a young woman who was adamant that he should know her and that he made an important promise years ago. That woman was Chi-Chi, the daughter of Gyūmaō who Goku and Bulma met on their initial quest for the Dragon Balls. Goku had promised to marry Chi-Chi later, but had only done so because he had mistaken 'marriage' for a food. Despite this, he agreed that a promise was a promise and decided to marry her after the tournament. However, the tournament was far from over, in the final round Goku fought Ma Junior, the offspring of Piccolo. Once his true identity was revealed to the public, Piccolo began launching attacks on the entire island as people evacuated. Goku's friends tried to step up to the fight, however he refused their help saying that if they interfered he'd be disqualified from the match, despite the fact the world was at stake. In the end, the victor was Goku, but instead of dealing the final strike to Piccolo he instead spared him because he needed a good rival to keep him on his toes. A year later, in May of Age 757, Goku and Chi-Chi had their first child, Son Gohan.

On 12 October, Age 761, Goku had a get together with his friends. However it did not last long before an alien invader named Raditz came to reveal Goku's heritage as a Saiyan and demanded that he join the other few remaining members of their species acting as interplanetary land sharks. Goku was able to team up with Piccolo and together the two of them defeated Raditz, with Goku sacrificing his own life in the progress. While the Dragon Balls would be able to bring him back, the Earth was still in peril due to the impending arrival of Raditz's comrades on Earth. Goku opted to stay dead and traverse the Serpent Road in order to train with the North Kaiō. While on Kaiō's planet he became exponentially stronger, but forgot to take into account the time it would take for him to return to Earth when the Saiyans arrived. He was resurrected on 02 November, Age 762 and did not arrive on the battlefield until the following day, at which point several of his comrades were dead. Goku fought a fierce battle with the Saiyans, and allowed one of them, Vegeta, to leave Earth alive.

With the Earth's Dragon Balls rendered unusable in the aftermath of the battle with the Saiyans, Gohan, Kuririn and Bulma departed for the planet Namek to use the Dragon Balls there to revive those killed by the Saiyans while Goku was hospitalized. However, the situation on Namek was dire upon their arrival and Goku also departed for the planet after being discharged on 18 December, arriving on Namek on 24 December. Shortly after his arrival on Namek, Goku ended up in a showdown with Freeza, a galactic warlord, during which Freeza mercilessly murdered Kuririn, triggering Goku's rage fueled transformation into a Super Saiyan. The showdown between Goku and Freeza ultimately lead to planet Namek's destruction, with Goku escaping the planet's fate in a space pod pre-programmed to go to planet Yardrat. He subsequently spent most of the year there training, not returning to Earth until August, Age 764.

Upon returning to Earth, Goku was confronted by Trunks, the time travelling son of Bulma and Vegeta, who brought warnings about a fatal heart disease Goku would soon contract as well as the impending arrival of Artificial Humans created by Dr. Gero, a scientist formerly in the employ of the Red Ribbon Army, on 12 May, Age 767. Three years later, Goku fell ill as Trunks predicted, leaving him out of commission for a few days during the battle with the Artificial Humans until the medicine Trunks left restored his health, by which point another creation of Dr. Gero known as Cell, had come to absorb the Artificial Humans to obtain his perfect form.

To gain the strength to defeat Cell, Goku and Gohan entered the Room of Spirit and Time on 16 May, where they could perform a full year of training in the span of one day. While they were in the room, Cell obtained his perfect form and announced an event known as the Cell Game scheduled for 26 May. On the day of the event, Goku forfeited his match against Cell and nominated Gohan as his successor. However, Gohan's reluctance to kill Cell put the Earth in danger when Cell decided to self destruct, leaving Goku with no option but to use the Yardratian Teleportation technique to move Cell to Kaio's planet before exploding. Goku was killed in the blast and declined being resurrected after the battle was over.

Goku spent the next seven years training in the afterlife until he received permission for a one day trip back to Earth on 07 May, Age 774, so he could meet up with old friends and participate in the 25th Tenka'ichi Budōkai. However, the tournament was soon put on hold due to a plot involving the revival of Majin Buu. Goku worked together with the East Kaiōshin to prevent Buu's revival, but Vegeta refused to let his chance for a rematch with Goku slip by and allowed Babidi to manipulate the evil in his heart. Buu was soon revived and Vegeta knocked Goku out before sacrificing his own life in an attempt to stop Buu. With little time remaining in the mortal realm, Goku taught the fusion technique to Son Goten and Trunks.

Upon his return to the afterlife, Goku travelled to the Kaiōshin realm, where his life was restored by the Elder Kaiōshin allowing him to return to the living realm permanently. Goku returned to Earth to do battle with Buu, who had absorbed the powers of Goten, Trunks, Piccolo and Gohan. In order to save the ones who had been absorbed, Goku and Vegeta fused to become Vegetto and deliberately allowed themselves to be absorbed by Buu to free the others from the inside. After escaping from Buu's insides, the Earth was destroyed and the battle moved to the Kaiōshin realm. As the battle continued, the Earth and its people were restored allowing Goku to borrow everyone's energy to create a Genki Dama capable of defeating Buu once and for all.

Goku returned to living with his family on Earth, continuing to train to become even stronger. In Age 778, Goku was confronted by the God of Destruction Beerus and obtained the power of a Super Saiyan God. He further refined this power by training under Beerus's attendant Whis.

On 07 May, Age 784, Goku entered the 28th Tenka'ichi Budōkai and took Uub, the reincarnation of Majin Buu, on as his apprentice.
