Name and Pronouns
An'nin's name is based on the Japanese word for almond jelly (杏仁豆腐 annin-doufu) a Chinese dessert. The name is spelled in katakana アンニン from the source アンニンドウフ. This name was suggested by Hideki Mitsui, a screenwriter and contemporary of Takao Koyama, who did not work directly on the series otherwise. The suggestion was influenced by dishes Mitsui sampled on his culinary tour in Taiwan as documented in the May 1986 issue of the magazine Fanroad.[1]
Her godly title as as the Supreme Elderly Lord (太上老君 Taijō-Rōkun) is taken straight from one of the names of Laozi, the founder of Taoism (specifically the name of the deified Laozi). Laozi, as the Supreme Elderly Lord, appears in Journey to the West, where he tries to destroy Sun Wukong by placing him inside his mystical furnace. Goku's encounter with An'nin is loosely based on this.
An'nin uses the informal, feminine first-person pronoun atashi (あたし) to refer to herself.[2]
Production
Due to the production schedule inherent in producing a weekly anime series based on a weekly comic, the writers of Dragon Ball interjected anime-only material both as a means of extending the runtime and to flesh out the Dragon Ball universe. An'nin and the wedding dress storyline was written to depict Son Goku and Chi-Chi's engagement prior to the time-skip and the arrival of Raditz.
