Biography

A brief biography of the character. Its length should be relative to the character's involvement in the series, but brevity and conciseness is still expected.

Name

The Tenka'ichi Budōkai announcer initially and accidentally reads Chiaotzu's name with its Japanese pronunciation of gyōza

Chiaotzu is introduced alongside other characters with Chinese or pseudo-Chinese names, including Tenshinhan and Tao Pai-Pai. Chiaotzu's name of 餃子 would normally be read in Japanese as gyōza, and is taken directly with the same spelling as the word used to refer to dumplings, specifically of the Chinese/Japanese variety.[6] The チャオズ furigana consistently provided above the character's name, however, indicates an approximation of the Chinese (Mandarin) pronunciation as the intended reading. While these katakana characters would normally be transliterated into our alphabet as "Chaozu", with the intended pronunciation being Chinese rather than Japanese, going back to said Chinese would provide a romanization of "Chiaotzu" under the Wades-Giles system and "Jiaozi" under the current Hanyu Pinyin system (similar to "Peking" vs. "Beijing" for 北京市).

Print materials in Japan regularly use the "Chaozu" or even "Chaoz" alphabet spelling alongside the Chinese characters.

During the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai, the announcer mistakenly reads Chiaotzu's name aloud using the Japanese pronunciation of gyōza, which Chiaotzu then corrects.[7][8]
