Beerus's name was originally adapted from the Japanese transliteration of the German pronunciation of Virus (ビールス/Biirusu). In the original script for Battle of Gods, Yūsuke Watanabe had imagined Beerus as the God of Destruction responsible for infecting the Saiyans with evil.[2][3] When Akira Toriyama revised the script, he thought that the pun was on the German word Bier (also ビールス), so he named Beerus's attendant Whis after "whiskey".[4] This accident served to establish the theme of Gods of Destruction and Angels being named after alcoholic beverages.[5]

The Japanese Battle of Gods program guide uses the romanization "Beers",[6] which is the spelling used by FUNimation's translator Steve Simmons in their subtitles, but the FUNimation dub spelling, "Beerus", serves to capture both the intended Watanabe pun and the accidental Toriyama pun, whether or not that was their intention.

Q: Did you pick the romanization Beerus, or was that the work of Steve Simmons? Just curious.
A: There were many discussions. I fought for Beerus because it sounds like the Japanese and classier than Beers—also searchable.
