Dragon Ball Characters

The following fictional characters appeared in Dragon Ball, either in Akira Toriyama's original manga series or exclusive to Toei Animation's animated adaptation of it.

Earthlings

The word "Earthling" (地球人; chikyūjin) in Dragon Ball refers to any being of terrestrial origin. Since the majority of the series is spent on Earth, it is no surprise that this group is the largest character base. Akira Toriyama, a nature loving person himself, used many inhabitants of Earth for the basis of his characters, not just humans. Although some of these non-human Earthling characters had human characteristics (walking upright and talking), they were classified separately from ordinary humans. All "Earthling" characters have been divided up into the following categories.

Aliens

Aliens, or extraterrestrials, in the "Dragon World" are beings not originally from the Planet Earth. After Akira Toriyama had exhausted all of the Earth's strongest warriors, he decided to expand to the rest of the universe. From that point on, the series was never the same. Toriyama was now able to create a much wider variety of characters at will, specifically ridiculously strong opponents for Goku and friends to face off against. In addition, many of the Earth's greatest warriors turned out to be aliens themselves, including the main protagonist, Son Goku. All "Alien" characters have been divided up into the following categories:

Babidi's Organization

A group originally lead by Babidi's father, Bibidi, who showed the universe absolute evil through the creation of Majin Buu, a being of pure evil. They delight in killing people through mysterious powers and abilities, and plot to destroy the entire universe.

Freeza's Organization

An organization lead by Freeza, they have attacked numerous planets one after the other, annihilating countless races across the universe, and then selling them off. Together they possess cruel personalities that delight in obsessively killing, to the point that they are insatiable.

Namekians

A relatively peaceful alien race whose existence was revealed through the arrival of Piccolo Daimaō on Earth. Most Namekians are divided up into Dragon Clan members, those who are the basic variety of Namekian, and specific warrior-types who are birthed by the Eldest to protect each village. In addition there are members of the "Demon Clan", a small group that was exiled due to the evil that had stained their hearts.

Saiyans

The Saiyan are a warrior race that have come to shape the universe's history through their superior battle power. They are excited at the arrival of a strong opponent, and they heartily enjoy grand battles. The more intense the battle, the happier they feel. They are certainly a race that was born to fight.

Afterlife

These divine figures inhabit the afterlife of the "Dragon World" and it is their job to oversee its mortal inhabitants, both as they live their lives and in the afterlife. While the majority of them are quite powerful in their own right, they are not necessarily the strongest beings in the universe, with many of the Z Warriors surpassing them. Like many hierarchies, each divine figure oversees a specific region and reports to a superior that oversees those collective regions. In a Dragon Ball Z anime-only filler story arc, the Dai Kaiō is shown to oversee the Afterlife Tournament, held between numerous deceased warriors from the universe's four galaxies.

Fusions

Gotan Japanese VA: Masako Nozawa & Daisuke Gōri (Dragon Ball Z 2) A hypothetical fusion Son Goku imagines between himself and Mister Satan as he frantically searches for someone else to fuse with after Majin Buu absorbs Son Gohan. Fortunately Vegeta shows up before Goku can make this fusion a reality, however the character was later brought to life in the "Dragon Ball Z 2" video game.

Gotenks Japanese VA: Masako Nozawa & Takeshi Kusao Before returning to the afterlife, Son Goku teaches Trunks and Son Goten the Fusion dance in order to defeat Majin Buu. After some trial and error the two eventually master the dance, and with their combined intellect they create numerous childish, yet somewhat effective techniques.

Vegetto Japanese VA: Masako Nozawa & Ryō Horikawa With no other warriors left on Earth, Son Goku pleads with Vegeta, who eventually agrees, to fuse with him using the Potara earrings before Majin Buu destroys the planet. It is quickly obvious that Vegetto embodies the cocky fighting attitude of the two Saiyans, and he makes it clear that there is no doubt his strength surpasses Majin Buu. However, Majin Buu takes advantage of his cockiness and absorbs Vegetto, breaking the permanent fusion.
