Yama is a minor fictional character in the Dragon Ball universe by Akira Toriyama. He is a minor cameo character honoring director Tadayoshi Yamamuro that appeared in Dragon Ball Z Episode 195. Yama appears as an office worker working for King Enma.
Biography
Little is known about Yama, however he worked at King Enma's castle in Age 767 when Son Goku and Kaiō passed through. He was shocked to see that Goku still had his body and a "free pass" to train in the Afterlife[note 1][1].
Name
Yama is one of three oni in Dragon Ball Z Episode 195 to share names with Dragon Ball Z series directors. The others are Shimoto, named for Mitsuo Hashimoto and Suenaga, named for Yuichi Suenaga. Yama may also have been chosen as a shortened form of Akira Toriyama or as a possible "English" variation on King Enma's name itself.
Production
Due to the production schedule inherent in producing a weekly anime series based on a weekly comic, the writers of Dragon Ball Z interjected anime-only material as a means of extending the runtime and to flesh out the Dragon Ball universe. Yama and the other cameo oni were created to flesh out the Afterlife during the Afterlife Tournament arc.
