Futopa is a fictional character in the Japanese animated series Dragon Ball GT. Futopa makes his debut in episode 3, which debuted on Fuji TV on 21 February 1996.

Biography

After being scammed by the merchants and hoteliers of Planet Imegga, Goku, Trunks, and Pan drift through the city in the rain. As they lean against a wall, Pan falls through into Futopa's house. Pan nervously greets Futopa and his family, and they greet her in return. Trunks and Goku peek in, and pleasantries are exchanged again. The hole in the canvas wall is patched up, and the Earth trio sits at a small table with a candle and tells the family their story. Since they are from off-planet, Futopa says it makes sense that they were surprised by the greedy merchants. Pan thinks that is an understatement; the people on this planet seem to be interested in nothing aside from making money. Trunks chastises her for her rudeness, but Futopa says it is okay; it is the truth, after all. He asks his wife to back him up, and she agrees; it is quite shameful. Goku asks them why everyone wants money so much; Futopa tells them it is because of Don Kia. Trunks tries to inquire further, but just then, sirens approach; Futopa and his wife realize that the police are coming for them.

Futopa and his family are left out in the rain.

A group of robot-police open the garage-style door on the unit, informing Futopa that the rental on their house has run out. They must pay at once, or be evicted. When Futopa does not offer any money, the robots begin disassembling the unit. Goku asks if they can really do that, and Pan is distressed that they are going to lose their house, but Futopa tells them it is okay; they cannot afford to pay their rent. His wife tells them that it was not like this before Don Kia became the king. Trunks prompts them to go on, so Futopa explains that the residents of Planet Imegga have to borrow everything from Don Kia in order to survive; only their children are truly their own. The robots take the roof, leaving them all sitting in the rain. Futopa continues, telling them that the rental fees are unreasonably high, and normal people like them cannot afford them. His wife adds that this is why everyone does whatever they can to make money. Futopa explains that travelers like them who do not know any better make easy targets for the merchants. Finally, the robots take the table and then announce that the collections operation is complete. Goku offers to beat up the robots and take their things back, but Futopa does not believe that a child like him can handle the task. And besides, if they try, Don Kia will come after them with an army. Futopa's wife tells them that they have been ready for this since yesterday, when they were unable to pay rent. The Earth trio returns to their spaceship in the desert.[1]

Name

Futopa's name, only given in the credits, is derived from futoppara (太っ腹 or フトッパラ), meaning "generous". This name pun follows Planet Imegga's money theme.

Performance

Futopa is voiced by Yukimasa Kishino, whose most notable role was Butta in Dragon Ball Z. In the Funimation English dub, Futopa is voiced by Grant James, who also voiced Goku's doctor in Dragon Ball Z.

Futopa's children are not credited in the original Japanese version; however, in the Funimation dub, Jamie Marchi is credited as the daughter, and Alison Retzloff is credited as the son.
