Panput is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball manga series by Akira Toriyama. Panput makes his debut in chapter 116 as a contestant in the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai. Although he is given a basic background as a martial artist in the original manga, his role and background are expanded in the anime adaptation, primarily in an episode written by Keiji Terui.
Biography
In the anime, Panput is depicted as a skilled martial artist as well as an action movie star. He began his joint career sometime prior to Age 753, the year of the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai. By that time, he had starred in at least three films and developed a rabid fan-base, adopting a lifestyle of luxury while continuing his training. His martial arts skills earned him a reputation as a "Genius of Martial Arts" that even the Turtle Hermit had heard of. At some point, he selected Vodka[note 2] as his manager, not knowing that the conman was becoming rich at his expense. Thanks in part to Vodka's underhanded tactics, Panput was able to win two major martial arts tournaments between May of 752 and 753, with the Tenka'ichi Budōkai as the "triple crown". Vodka realized that Goku was formidable threat to his client and arranged for him to lose the battle by default, by tricking Goku into riding with him away from the tournament grounds just prior to the match. Goku was rescued by Lunch and was able to make it back to the tournament just in time for the match.[1] In the original manga, Panput's background is solely as a martial artist, albeit a flashy and egotistical one. Still recognized as a "Genius of Martial Arts", he won the previous two tournaments without any underhanded assistance.[2]
Panput faced off against Son Goku in the first round of the tournament. At first, he attempted to psych out Goku by throwing a punch near his face just prior to the start of the match. When Goku did not react, he was given permission to demonstrate his skills with a brief exposition of punches and kicks, concluding by knocking a segment out of the arena wall before announcing that he would defeat Goku in less than thirty seconds. As soon as the match began, Goku felled him with a quick series of punches to the abdomen and advanced to the next round.[3][4]
After the tournament, Panput was one of the fighters targeted for elimination by Demon King Piccolo and his henchmen. In the manga, it is not stated whether Panput was located and killed. In the anime, Panput was felled by Tambourine after being located at a kickboxing match the day after the tournament.[5] He was later resurrected by the dragon balls.
Name
Panput's name pun, if any, was forgotten by Toriyama except that his name "sounded Thai".[6]
Production
Due to the production schedule challenges inherent in producing a weekly anime series based on a weekly comic, the writers of the Dragon Ball anime interjected anime-only material both as a means of extending the runtime and to flesh out the Dragon Ball universe. Panput, as well as his manager and his henchmen, were created by Keiji Terui as a means of adding drama and elongating a very short battle in the manga, as well as to explain Panput's arrogance and bravado when fighting Goku.
Panput's character design resembles that of a Muay Thai fighter.
Notable Skills
Panput is an expert martial artists, called a "genius" of martial arts and winner of several lower-level tournaments, however he is outclassed by his fellow contestants in the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai. Panput is depicted as stronger and more capable in the original manga, while the anime implies that he was only able to win his tournaments due to the underhanded efforts of his manager.
Performance
Panput was portrayed by Katsuji Mori, a voice actor who primarily worked on other anime series. He later went on to portray Nail in Dragon Ball Z, but was replaced in that role by Taiten Kusunoki for Dragon Ball Kai.
