"From Goku to Gohan... A Father's Spirit is Passed Down" is the one hundred and ninetieth episode of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Z. The episode first aired in Japan on Fuji TV on 23 June 1993, receiving a ratings share of 24.3%. It was written by Hiroshi Toda and directed by Shigeyasu Yamauchi.
Synopsis
Presently surprised at his own power, which surpasses his perfect form, Cell recalls the events that led from his creation by Doctor Gero's computer up to the present. The ki Cell gathers is high enough to blow away the solar system, and people tremble in fear as the Earth shakes! As Gohan is overwhelmed by this power and resigns himself, through Kaio, Goku's voices reaches him from the afterlife. Encouraged by Goku, Gohan assumes the stance with just his right arm, and shoots a gigantic Kamehameha.
Summary
Part A
Cell taunts the injured Son Gohan as he prepares to launch a planet-killing kamehameha. Gohan despairs that he will be unable to save the Earth, while Mister Satan screams that it is all a trick and the ZTV reporter desperately tries to report on the scene while speaking into a piece of wood. Vegeta struggles to stand. With humility, he apologizes to Gohan for his actions. Everyone despairs that there is nothing left for them to do.
On God's Temple, Dende and Mr. Popo also feel Cell's incredible ki. Dende fears for Gohan has he has never felt a power like this. Cell's power is even felt as far away as New Planet Namek.
As Cell contemplates destroying the world, he flashes back to his own timeline. At Dr. Gero's lab, a lightning storm rips across the landscape. Gero, bleary-eyed, types into a computer as the embryonic Cell gestates in a tube nearby. An elevator descends into a lab as Artificial Human No. 17 and No. 18 check in on their creator. 17 and 18 complain that Gero does not need to keep working on his new creation as they are already capable of destroying Son Goku. No. 17 knocks some plans off of Gero's desk and opens a schematic to reveal a skeletal design. Gero scolds his creation, telling them that he is building the "ultimate" Artifical Human. No. 17 takes umbrage at being surpassed, but Gero says that will be like children compared to his new work. He threatens them his the remote control, implying that he has used it before, but No. 18 responds by knocking over some incubation tubes. Gero reaches for his remote, but No. 17 attacks him from behind and knocks his head off just as he did in the main timeline. Gero, despite appearing more outwardly human, is revealed to also be a robot. Outside, the storm continues raging. As he lays dying, Dr. Gero's head tells the pair that they will be absorbed into his ultimate Artificial Human. In response, No. 18 blasts him. Together, the pair looks into to Cell's incubator and calls him "cute". They apologize to Cell for what they are about to do, then "snip" him by destroying the lab in a pair of ki blasts. Cell's incubator survives the blast and is nurtured by Gero's computer to fruition.
Years later, Cell grows large enough that he breaks through the glass of his incubation pod. Cell emerges first in a bug form then molts, becoming Imperfect Cell. He discovered that the world had largely been destroyed by Nos. 17 and 18, but he absorbed what people that he could to gain energy. Eventually, he discovered Trunk's Time Machine and re-entered his larval form to crawl inside, using it to travel ten years into the past and to the main timeline. Once there, he absorbed No. 17 and No. 18 to become Perfect Cell. Even that form was not the true perfection that Doctor Gero searched for...
