Summary

Part A

On God's Temple, Mr. Popo looks on nervously as Vegeta paces. It is nearly time for Piccolo to emerge from the Room of Spirit and Time and Vegeta is becoming impatient. As if on cue, Piccolo emerges from the room. Trunks perceives that his power has risen exponentially, but Vegeta is dismissive, teasing the Namekian that he has not improved himself at all. As Vegeta takes his turn, he promises himself that he will surpass Kakarrot!

At Capsule Corp Headquarters, Bulma continues repairing Android 16. On the television, the Dog King reassures his people that his Royal Defense Force will soon be attacking Cell. Bulma turns off the TV, remarking that only Son Goku and the others can defeat him. As she works, she is amazed to discover that 16 is even more powerful than either 17 or 18, plus has a part that even she cannot understand while allows him to detect ki.

Out in the countryside, Chi-chi prepares a picnic for Gohan, Goku, and Kuririn. As Goku watches the fish in the lake, he is challenged by Gohan and Kuririn about taking things so easy. He counters that something will come up and that there isn't any reason to train harder than they already did. Kuririn asks when Goku got his driver's license and Chi-chi responds that it was three years prior with Piccolo. Chi-chi reveals that she even forced Goku to study all night for the written portion of the exam. After the picnic, Goku spots the Air Force flying overhead before driving the family towards a city, passing an incredible traffic jam as the residents fled town. Kuririn suspects that everyone must feel safer in rural areas. Once they arrive in the city, Chi-chi realizes that all of the stores are closed and they will not be able to buy a present for the Turtle Hermit after all. A bulletin comes on the radio that the military is arriving at Cell's position.

At the Cell Games tournament location, Cell smiles as the combined military might of the world assembles around him.

Tidbits

  • Dialog establishes this episode as being seven days before the Cell Games.
  • This is the first appearance of the Dog King since Dragon Ball Episode 145, a gap of 181 episodes.
  • There is a brief flashback to Dragon Ball Z Episode 125 with Goku and Piccolo learning to drive cars with Yuzukar and Cynthia.
  • In the manga version of the story from Dragon Ball Chapter 392, Goku and his family drive home through a rural area. In the animated adaptation, they drive home through a city to do some shopping and see the panicked citizens fleeing on the highway. The visited city bears some resemblance to Metro West, but would need to be located much closer to Mount Paozu and Kame House for Goku and his family to be able to drive between them for a picnic lunch. Gohan's later need to attend school in Satan City (off to the north and away from Kame House) is difficult to reconcile with a large nearby city appearing in this episode.
    • The family pass stores labeled Lidan and Don Don House. Because of reused animation, they pass those stores over and over again.
    • While driving through the city, an animation error for scenes on the outside of the car depict Gohan in his base form. On scenes inside the car, Gohan is correctly depicted as a Super Saiyan.
