Summary
Prologue
Oolong drives Goku and Bulma in their new capsule car, a gift from Yamcha, toward the next Dragon Ball on Mount Frypan. After two days of driving, Oolong tells Bulma they are almost there. Bulma thinks it is too hot for a place so far north, but Oolong informs her it is because of Mount Frypan, which was known as Chilly Mountain before a fire spirit set it on fire ten years past, causing the climate to change. When they get closer, Goku sees the fire and thinks it is sunset, but Bulma observes that it is afternoon. Oolong tells them it is Mount Frypan. Behind them, Yamcha and Pu'er follow in their own car, waiting for an opportunity to steal the Dragon Balls.
Part A
Having failed to steal the Dragon Balls, Mai and Shuu trek back to Pilaf's Castle through the desert, worrying about how Pilaf will punish them for their failure. Mai wishes he would say something nice to them every now and then, so Shuu play-acts the part, offering Mai some nice, warm soup; everyone makes mistakes from time to time, after all. Mai pretends to accept this kindness graciously, but she cannot keep up the act for long. Shuu commiserates; Pilaf will probably yell and thunder at them again. When they arrive at the palace, Pilaf tells them not to worry; everyone makes mistakes from time to time, offering them some nice, warm soup. Mai and Shuu are overcome with happiness, but Pilaf was just joking; he presses a button under his table with his fork; Mai and Shuu are captured by robotic arms, with metal helmets placed on their heads, while the roof opens to a lightning show. After they are struck, Shuu observes that he literally thundered at them. Pilaf asks what they expected, pointing at them with his fork, and then lightning strikes the fork.

Goku & co. arrive at Mount Frypan, and once again Oolong tries to discourage them from this mission. Aside from the fire, the Ox Demon King lives there. Bulma asks whether he is really all that scary; Oolong cannot believe she has never heard of him. He is known as the Demon Emperor, and everyone who gets near the mountain is killed. Oolong points out his castle at the top of the burning mountain; this is where he keeps the treasures he has stolen, and many have tried to take it for themselves, but the Ox Demon King guards it. Bulma thinks the sixth Dragon Ball must be in the castle; Goku wonders if the Ox Demon King is there too, but Oolong says he says at the base of the mountain to protect the castle; he was on a picnic with his child when the mountain caught fire, preventing their return. Bulma wonders how Oolong knows so much about this, so he tells her he learned about it in school. He again tries to convince them to leave, but Bulma did not come all this way to abandon the Dragon Ball. Oolong asks if they want to die—even Goku could not possibly be a match for the Ox Demon King—but this just makes Goku want to meet him more. Oolong gives up and tries to take off in their car, but Bulma calls "Pee-Pee" and forces him to stop and visit the bushes.

Pu'er wants to give up too, but Yamcha thinks it is possible that Goku will be beaten by the Ox Demon King, and then Yamcha can get revenge for his tooth. At that moment, though, they hear a girl screaming. A young girl is running frantically from a dinosaur; she uses a boomerang blade on her helmet to sever the dinosaur's head, and then uses a helmet beam to incinerate it. Crying, she runs unwittingly toward Yamcha and Pu'er, who are amazed at her battle prowess. When she sees them, she attacks in fear, so Yamcha knocks her out with a chop to the neck. As he and Pu'er head toward Mount Frypan, Pu'er wonders why Yamcha was not scared of this girl like he usually is, and Yamcha explains that he is not into children.
On Mount Frypan, bulma complains about the heat, and Oolong warns her to be quiet, or the Ox Demon King will find them. The Dragon Radar confirms that there is a Dragon Ball in the castle, so she asks Goku to fly up there and try to get it. Oolong panics when Goku calls Kinto-un, but he flies over the castle. As he tries to get closer, he gets caught in the flames, and his tail catches fire, so he flies over a lake and jumps in. Meanwhile, the Ox Demon King finds Bulma and Oolong unguarded, tossing his axe at them. Oolong wets his pants, and the Ox Demon King asks if they are there to steal his treasures. Bulma tries to convince him that they are just passing through, but he seems skeptical.
Part B

As Goku nurses his tail in the lake, Bulma calls for him, so he uses his Nyoi-bō to propel himself back up to where they are. He tells Bulma and Oolong that it was too hot for him to get inside the castle, and the Ox Demon King takes this as confirmation that they were indeed there to steal. He attacks, chasing Goku with his axe, while Bulma cheers Goku on. Goku is not able to harm the giant man with his blows, so he calls Kinto'un to swirl around his head and make him dizzy. His blows still fail to do damage, but then the Ox Demon King recognizes Kinto'un and demands to know where Goku got it. When Goku tells him that he got it from the Turtle Hermit, the Ox Demon King asks him if he knows where Muten Rōshi lives. Goku asks Bulma, who says that he must live somewhere off the coast.
Then, the Ox Demon King asks whether Goku's pole is the Nyoi-bō, and Goku is amazed that he knows so much. He tells him that he got it from his grandpa, and the Ox Demon King asks whether that is Son Gohan. Goku confirms that it is. Yamcha, who is hiding nearby with Pu'er, is surprised that Goku and the Ox Demon King seem to know each other. Then the Ox Demon King tells Goku that his grandpa was Muten Rōshi's best pupil, while he was the second-best. Oolong realizes that this is why Goku is so strong, while Bulma is dismayed to learn that the perverted old man is someone important.

The Ox Demon King asks Goku to find Muten Rōshi and ask him if he can use the Basho Fan to put out the fire on Mount Frypan. Goku agrees, and asks if he can have his Dragon Ball in exchange. Goku shows him the Four-Star Ball, and the Ox Demon King recognizes it, and says he can have the one in the castle. Bulma celebrates, and Oolong is relieved that they will survive this after all. Yamcha has never seen a Dragon Ball before, and he and Pu'er are surprised that they are so small. Goku prepares to leave and says he will be back soon, but the Ox Demon King asks him to find his daughter Chi-Chi, since he had just sent her out the day before to look for Muten Rōshi, and take her along. Then he suggests that Goku could make her his bride, but Goku does not know what that means. Oolong imagines a woman that looks like her father, but the Ox Demon King pulls out a picture of her. Goku is not impressed, but Oolong thinks she is cute.
Meanwhile, Yamcha and Pu'er realize that this is the girl who attacked them earlier. Terrified of her father's displeasure, they rush to revive her before Goku finds her. When Chi-Chi wakes up, she tries to attack them again, but Yamcha gets her attention by calling her by her name. She asks how he knows it, and he says it does not matter; he apologizes for hitting her so hard; he was just overcome with love for her. She blushes, asking if he truly loves her, and he insists that he does, telling her to look at his face. She asks him about his missing tooth, and Pu'er encourages Yamcha while he fights the urge to retort. Chi-Chi says this is the first time anyone has said they love her. Goku flies in on Kinto'un, so Yamcha takes the cue to escape, while Chi-Chi says that she read about love in a magazine; this leads to dating and holding hands, and she is overcome with embarrassment.

Chi-Chi notices Yamcha leaving, and assumes he is embarrassed too, but just then, Goku calls out to her and asks if she is Chi-Chi. She confirms that she is, and wonders why so many people know her name today. She asks he it is because he loves her, too, but he ignores her, asking if she is the Ox Demon King's daughter. She confirms this too, and Goku explains that her father asked him to help her find the Basho Fan. Chi-Chi is excited to hear this; Goku tells her to get on Kinto'un, but she is doubtful that she can ride it. He tells her that she only needs a pure heart, and she tells him that her heart is as clean as a flushed toilet. She has trouble getting on, so she grabs Goku's tail, immobilizing him. He falls off the cloud, and tells her not to grab his tail; it causes him to lose all his strength. She asks him why he has a tail, and he tells her he does not know; he just does.
Meanwhile, Yamcha is watching from a hiding place yet again, and he is thrilled to learn of Goku's weakness. As Goku and Chi-Chi take off, with Chi-Chi struggling to stay on, Pu'er asks Yamcha what their plan is, and he says they should wait for them to get the sixth Dragon Ball, and then follow them to the seventh ball. As soon as they have all seven, Yamcha will use his Rōga Fū-Fū Ken to steal them.

As Kinto'un flies toward the Turtle Hermit, Goku uses his foot to confirm that Chi-Chi does not have a wiener, and that she is a girl. She cries and knocks him off the cloud, which then crashes her into a nearby rock. Back at Mount Frypan, the Ox Demon King wonders if Goku has managed to find his daughter. Bulma hopes that he did not try patting her crotch. Back on Kinto'un, Goku rubs his head and asks Chi-Chi why she did that; he did not do anything that bad. She insists that he did, but she blushes, and the narrator explains that, now that she has been touched there, her only choice is to marry this boy. Goku observes that the ocean is really big and thinks that maybe they should ask someone for directions. Chi-Chi tells him, "Good idea, dear!" (あなた anata). He asks what she means by that, and she blushes and tells him nothing. Goku asks a dolphin for directions, and the dolphin points him in the right direction, telling him that the Turtle Hermit lives on a small island. Chi-Chi says she does not see "people like that" often. When they get close, Chi-Chi spots the house, and Goku confirms it. He calls out to the Turtle Hermit when they arrive. Umigame is there too The Turtle Hermit is surprised to see the boy he gave the Kinto'un to. Chi-Chi asks if that is really him, and Goku confirms, hoping off his cloud. He asks the old man how he is doing, and the Turtle Hermit says he is doing just fine. Will they be able to borrow the Basho Fan?!
