Safari is a fictional character in the Dr. Slump manga series by Akira Toriyama. Safari makes his debut in Dr. Slump Chapter 44, published in the 1980 #48 issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump.

Biography

Safari is a tour guide at the Wildland zoo. He guides Arale, Gatchan, Tarō, Peasuke, and Akane through the park on their visit. Safari tells everyone to enjoy the ride and not to exit the car at any time. When Arale responds with multiple affirmatives, he tells her one answer will do.

The first animal spotted on the tour is a dog, and everyone crowds at the window to see it, causing Safari to fall over. He was trying to get them, but they got him. Then Akane freaks out and points at another crazy example of the wildlife: a fly on the window! Safari falls over again. He decides to get revenge and he slams his car into a tree, laughing when everyone falls over. Then he seems surprised when the car will not start. He tells them he will call for help on the radio, but his line has been cut. (Gatchan is eating the radio.)

Safari is impressed with these kids; they really are pros. Then Peasuke asks him for his autograph, causing him to fall over again. Safari does not know what to do; he is too young to die and he just got married. He determines to fix the vehicle (with a wrench and a hammer), and Tarō asks him if he knows what he is doing. Safari lights a fire to keep the animals away, but instead they gather around the fire to get warm and cook fish.

Safari thinks that maybe the gag manga thing is not for him after all; he needs to get out before he goes crazy. Akane thinks he is already crazy. Then Safari realizes that Arale and Gatchan are nowhere to be found. Akane tells him they are outside. He looks outside and freaks out; Arale is talking to the tiger, the king of the zoo! He's dangerous! Akane suggests he try to look scared, then. Meanwhile the tiger does his best to scare Arale, but she just yells back at him, causing him to fall over. Arale becomes friends with all the zoo animals, and Safari lets the reader know he fell over one last time.

Name

The character is not named in the manga, but he is credited as "Safari" in the anime. "Safari" (サファリ) is a fully borrowed word in the Japanese language, from the original Swahili.

Performance

Safari is voiced by Jōji Yanami, best known as the narrator in Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, and as the voice of North Kaiō.
