"Goku Dies! There's Only One Chance Left" is the fifth episode of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Z. The episode first aired in Japan on Fuji TV on 24 May 1989, receiving a ratings share of 16.4%. It was written by series organizer Takao Koyama and directed by Kazuhisa Takenōchi.

Synopsis

Gohan bursts from the spaceship and body slams Raditz! Astonished, Raditz tries to kill the now instantly powered-down Gohan, but Goku immobilizes him. As Goku says to shoot them both, Piccolo fires the Makankōsappō. The beam pierces through their two bodies!! In his death agony, Raditz's last words are that the two remaining Saiyans out in space will attack Earth in one year. Bulma and the others arrive, having followed behind, and as they watch, Goku passes away as well.

Summary

Part A

Raditz and Piccolo are shocked as Gohan bursts forth from the pod where he had been imprisoned, shaking with anger. Goku is unable to move, but he calls out to Gohan, telling him to run. Raditz reads Gohan's battle power on his scouter at 1,307. Gohan's anger comes to a crescendo. He demands that Raditz stop bullying his father, then launches himself at Raditz, hitting him in the chest with his head. Raditz's armor is cracked and he nearly loses his footing.

Gohan drops to the ground near his father. He gets up and goes to his father for comfort, but Raditz is stumbling in their direction, and he is angry. Goku tells Gohan to run, but Gohan does not understand. Raditz reads Gohan's power again on his scouter and sees that it has dropped to 1. He realizes that Gohan's power changes with his emotions. Then he hits Gohan upside the head, knocking him unconscious. Goku calls out to him, then tries to stop Raditz from going for him; he is just a child. Raditz scoffs; this child is stronger than Goku and Piccolo both, so Raditz is going to kill him before he learns to use that power. Raditz promises Goku will see him again soon in the afterlife.

As Raditz prepares to kill Gohan, he thinks to himself that Gohan is the first person who has managed to inflict this much damage on him. Energy crackles in his upraised hand, but then Goku manages to grab Raditz from behind, holding him in a lock. He tells Piccolo to hurry up and use that technique he used earlier. Piccolo is most pleased to have the opportunity to take both of them out at once. He has already been preparing it just in case, but he still needs a little more time.

Piccolo asks Goku why he did not just grab Raditz's tail again, and Goku explains that he could just cut off his own tail to overcome that weakness. Raditz is surprised Goku figured that out. He struggles to get out of Goku's grip, and Goku has a hard time holding him; Goku begs Piccolo to hurry. However, the damage that Gohan gave Raditz has caused his power to drop. Raditz tells Goku that he will die too if Piccolo hits him like this, but Goku tells him that he is prepared to die to take him out. Raditz thinks he is out of his mind. Piccolo promises Goku he will not hesitate. Then he thinks to himself that Goku's friends will probably just use the Dragon Balls to bring him back to life.

Goku again tells Piccolo to hurry; his ribs are broken and he cannot hold Raditz much longer. Meanwhile, Raditz reads Piccolo's battle power on his scouter: it is up to 1,485 now. He is almost ready to attack. Desperate, Raditz promises Goku that he will leave and never return. Goku tells him he will not be fooled again. Raditz says he is not lying and asks Goku why he does not trust the word of his older brother, but Goku just tells Piccolo to hurry. Piccolo fires the Makankōsappō, puncturing both Raditz and Goku through the chest. They fall to the ground, trailing blood.

Part B

As Raditz lays dying, he cannot believe he was done in by these guys. Who would have thought that Kakarrot would sacrifice himself like that? Piccolo gloats, telling Raditz that Goku will come back to life right away thanks to the Dragon Balls. Raditz then lets Piccolo know that this entire sequence of events has been communicated to his partners in space. They will be coming to Earth to purge the planet, and maybe they will use these things to wish him back to life. Goku, barely hanging on to life, asks Raditz when they will be here. Raditz tells him one year. Piccolo recalls that Raditz's friends are even stronger than he is, and Raditz assures him that they will have no chance of winning then for sure. Raditz tells them to enjoy the next year if they can, calling them worms. Angry, Piccolo ends his life.

At Goku's house, Chi-Chi thinks that Goku must be having a good time with his friends at Kame House. She worries whether Gohan is adjusting well to them, but she decides he will be okay; he has good manners. Chi-Chi wishes she had gone with them. Just then, a vehicle pulls up, and the Ox Demon King calls out for Gohan. Chi-Chi goes out to greet her father, who comes bearing gifts. He calls out for Gohan again, saying he brought presents, and squeezes in the front door.

Meanwhile, Bulma flies a plane carrying the Turtle Hermit and Kuririn. Having used a Dragon Radar to locate them, they look around for the exact location of the battlefield. On the battlefield, Raditz is finally dead; Piccolo tells him that is what he gets for running his mouth. Piccolo informs Goku that Raditz is dead, and then he notices Bulma's plane. Inside the plane, Kuririn has finally spotted them. Bulma notes that some of them are down, while Kuririn and the Turtle Hermit notice that Piccolo is the only one left standing.

Far away, deep in space, Nappa sits with Vegeta while he dines on the inhabitants of a planet they are purging. Nappa cannot believe that Raditz is dead, and Vegeta thinks it is pathetic that he was killed by someone with a battle power just over a thousand. Nappa wonders whether they should abandon this planet and go to Earth, and Vegeta thinks these Dragon Balls sound interesting. They should go. Nappa asks if they are going to bring Raditz back to life, and Vegeta tells him not to make jokes; they do not need him anymore. Vegeta suggests they should wish for eternal youth so they can fight forever. Nappa thinks that sounds nice.

Back on the battlefield, Piccolo has finished catching everyone up on what happened. Kuririn holds Goku's hand, begging him to stay with them, but Goku is nonresponsive. Bulma checks on Gohan, and upon seeing that he is breathing regularly, she tells everyone he is fine; he is just unconscious. Goku is happy to hear this; maybe Chi-Chi will not be angry with him. Kuririn is excited that Goku is talking, but Goku just commiserates, telling him this dying business is dreadful. Kuririn agrees, but then realizes that Goku has given up. He tells Goku to hang in there; it is not like him to give up. Goku says it does not look good for him this time, so Kuririn tells him they will bring him back to life right away. Goku says he is counting on it. Then he dies, and Kuririn cries out in grief.

Deep in space, Nappa and Vegeta approach their pods. Vegeta thinks that Kakarrot's son's battle power is truly remarkable, even for a Saiyan child. Nappa wonders if it might have been a mistake, but Vegeta does not think so. Raditz did take a lot of damage from his hit, after all. He theorizes that the Earthling-Saiyan hybrid might result in great power. Nappa asks if he means a Super Saiyan. As he gets in his pod, he suggests that they could try to mass-reproduce with the Earthlings and make Saiyan rule a reality. Vegeta laughs as he gets in his own pod, telling Nappa that the offspring might grow powerful enough to challenge their own power. Vegeta tells him they will exterminate the population of Earth, and Nappa thinks that three days should be enough for that. They close their pods and launch; Vegeta suggests they should have their first good, long sleep in a while, and Nappa says he will see Vegeta in a year. Their pods take off in the direction of Earth.

Back on Earth, Kuririn and the others mourn Goku's passing. Then Goku's body disappears, and Piccolo thinks this must be God's doing. This is something he would be capable of doing; he must intend to use Goku for something or another. What does God want with Goku?! With Goku gone, who will defend the Earth?! The Saiyans will arrive on Earth in one year!
