"Don't Anger the God of Destruction! The Heart Pounding Birthday Party" is the sixth episode of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Super. The episode first aired in Japan on Fuji TV on 16 August 2015. It was written by King Ryū and directed by Masanori Satō.

Summary

On Kaiō's planet, Goku has been revived with senzu and is raring to follow Beerus to Earth, but Kaiō warns him to stay put, and Goku grumpily obeys. Meanwhile at Bulma's birthday party, everyone continues to have fun... except Vegeta, who is panicking over the imminent arrival of Beerus. Just as Vegeta wonders where he has heard the name "Beerus" before, the God of Destruction himself suddenly appears behind him. Vegeta rushes toward Beerus but suddenly falls over paralyzed from one of Beerus' techniques. Looking up at Beerus' face, he suddenly remembers how Beerus had come to Planet Vegeta when he was young and tormented his father, King Vegeta, for not being sufficiently respectful, the one thing Beerus can never forgive. Vegeta recalls trying to help his father, but ending up paralyzed in much the same way as in the present.

Back in the present, Beerus tells Vegeta he ought to have destroyed their planet all those years ago. He questions Vegeta about Super Saiyan God, but Vegeta is as ignorant about it as Goku was. At that moment, Bulma happens to walk by. Beerus and Whis introduce themselves and explain that Vegeta has had too much to drink. While Bulma nonchalantly takes them along and introduces them to everyone else, Vegeta manages to crawl along after them. To his horror, Yamcha is a bit too friendly and informal with Beerus, and Kuririn even offers his some "Russian" takoyaki (octopus dumplings): regular takoyaki balls with a single, wasabi-filled ball thrown into the mix. Beerus tries some, and the nasty look on his face convinces Vegeta that he's picked the wasabi-filled one and that this spells the end. He vividly imagines the Earth blowing up, but it turns out Beerus has picked the regular takoyaki, which he finds absolutely delicious. Meanwhile, Kuririn tries some himself and happens to pick the wasabi-filled one, which proves far too spicy for him to handle.

With Beerus seemingly calm for the time being, the party continues on as before. The Pilaf Gang have eaten their fill, and Pilaf is still determined to find the Dragon Balls on the ship. Meanwhile, Goten and Trunks have a squirt gun battle, while Gohan and Videl romantically look out to sea together. Observing all this, Beerus notes that the Saiyans certainly are different nowadays, even considering that these are just half-breeds. Certainly none of them appear to be Super Saiyan God. Just as Beerus is considering heading back home, he gets nailed with a squirt gun blast. He furiously rises into the air, aura flaring, but Vegeta desperately dives overboard and brings back a massive octopus, which he begins to personally cook into takoyaki in order to appease Beerus (Kuririn requests no wasabi this time).

Bulma is happy to see Vegeta doing all this for her birthday party, and Beerus does seem to calm down. Whis tells him about a delicious dessert called "pudding", and they go to try some, but Boo is hogging all of the pudding for himself. Though Mister Satan tells Boo to share some with Beerus and Whis, he instead angrily licks all of the pudding. Mister Satan apologizes on behalf of Boo, but both Beerus and Boo knock him out of the way and begin to fight. Beerus easily dispatches Boo, noting once again that he can never forgive those who fail to show him the proper respect. Vegeta sees to his horror that despite his best efforts, the God of Destruction is now completely ticked off.

Episode Notes

• In the 2013 theatrical film Battle of Gods, Vegeta distracts Beerus in order to calm him down by performing a bingo song, whereas in Dragon Ball Super he distracts him by diving into the sea and pulling out an octopus for another round of takoyaki (octopus dumplings).

• Beerus's line after surprising Vegeta ("Do I really have to give my name? After all, you are already dead.") is a reference to the classic Kenshiro line from Fist of the North Star.

Errata

• When the previous episode's next episode preview was broadcast, Vegeta was briefly seen with two left hands in the scene where he falls down in front of Beerus and Whis. This was corrected before episode 6 was broadcast, and episode 5's NEP has also been corrected for home release.

• Key animator Mitsuteru Kubo's name is incorrectly spelled as 久保充輝 instead of 久保充照.

• The production of this episode was largely handled by Fūto Hirasawa of A-Line, an animation, planning, and production company, in cooperation with Toei Animation.

• This is the first episode of the Dragon Ball franchise to have multiple animation supervisors. Previously this had only been seen in features and theatrical films, but this became the standard for most of the remainder of Dragon Ball Super.

Availability

This episode has been released in numerous countries and languages around the world in both streaming and physical formats. "Simulcast" streaming services (even Funimation) use the Toei Animation subtitles rather than the Funimation subtitles by Steven J. Simmons, while digital purchase platforms use the Simmons subtitles that are provided on the Funimation DVDs and Blu-rays.

Streaming debut dates only apply to the subtitled simulcast. Dubbed episodes were to Funimation's streaming service a few weeks after the dub broadcast, and to AnimeLab around the time of the Madman home video release. Simulcast dates reflect regional time zones. The United Kingdom was originally covered by the now-defunct Daisuki streaming service until Crunchyroll added the UK to their Dragon Ball Super coverage area on 30 May 2017.
