Umigame is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball manga series by Akira Toriyama. Umigame makes his debut in chapter 3, published in the 1985 #01/02 issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump.
Biography
Umigame is first seen looming in darkness at the end of Dragon Ball Chapter 2, and the narration suggests he might be a threat in the next chapter.[1] He appears again in the first panel of the next chapter with similar narration. Goku is impatiently waiting for Bulma to get ready. She is so slow, he wonders if she is a turtle. He decides to go outside and train. He finds a big rock and lifts it, breaking it into pieces. He goes to grab the next big rock the same way, but it turns out to be Umigame. Goku momentarily thinks Bulma really has turned into a turtle; he tells her that this is her fault for being so slow. He is surprised when Bulma peeks out of the capsule house, asking what a sea turtle is doing so far from the sea.
Umigame asks if they have a bucket of salt water, and maybe some seaweed; Bulma remarks on his lack of shame. From somewhere, these items are produced, so he drinks up and thanks them, explaining his story. He was looking for matsutake mushrooms when he got lost, and he has been wandering for nearly a year trying to find his way back to the water. Bulma tells him he is going in the opposite direction of the sea; she consults a map and tells him the sea is 120 kilometers south. Goku asks Umigame if he would like for them to take him to the sea. Umigame is grateful, but Bulma is not happy at all to hear this plan; she only has 30 days left of summer vacation and she does not want to waste time on a turtle. Goku asks her if she would rather waste time on her hair, and she counters that it is not their responsibility; they have their own quest to worry about. Production
Umigame's story is likely inspired by Urashima Tarō, a popular Japanese folk tale where a young man rescues a turtle and receives a reward. Urashima rides the turtle's back to the Dragon Palace (龍宮城 Ryūgū-jō) under the sea where he is entertained by a princess and her handmaidens. When he leaves, she gives him a box (玉手箱 tamatebako, "jeweled hand box") and warns him never to open it. When Urashima returns home, many years have passed and everyone he knows is gone. He opens the tamatebako, and in a puff of smoke, he becomes an old man.
In Dragon Ball Chapter 3 and its adaptation in Dragon Ball Episode 3, when Umigame leaves Goku and Bulma after promising to return with a gift, Bulma wonders if he will bring them a tamatebako. The Viz manga adaptation and the Funimation English dub both simply have Bulma wondering what sort of gift a turtle could bring.
In the Dragon Ball 10th Anniversary Movie, the story is retold with Oolong already in the group. Oolong presses Umigame to bring them a gift, and when he says he will go fetch one, Oolong wonders if he is going to Dragon Palace, and tells him to give their greetings to the Sea Princess. Bulma tells him they do not need a tamatebako. Clyde Mandelin adapts these as Atlantis, Sea Princess, and Pandora's Box respectively in his subtitles for Funimation; the latter matches his subtitles for episode 3.
Performance
Umigame was voiced by Daisuke Gōri in Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. Gōri voiced several characters including Mister Satan for the franchise before his death in 2010, but the role of Umigame passed to Takahiro Fujimoto in 2009 even though Gōri continued to voice King Enma and the Ox Demon King in Dragon Ball Kai.
In the Funimation dub, Turtle is voiced by Christopher Sabat, best known as the voice of Vegeta, Piccolo, and Yamcha. Turtle was voiced by Chris Cason in Dragon Ball Z Kai, but Sabat reclaimed the role in Dragon Ball Super.
