"The Strong Villain of the Desert, Yamcha" is the fifth episode of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball. The episode first aired in Japan on Fuji TV on 26 March 1986, receiving a ratings share of 27.6%. The episode was written by series organizer Takao Koyama and directed by Daisuke Nishio.

Synopsis

Goku and the others aim for Mt. Frypan. Because Bulma dropped her capsules into a river, they end up having to cross a desert on foot! Completely exhausted, Bulma rests there. At this point, the desert bandit Yamcha appears, and tries to seize Oolong’s capsules. Goku battles Yamcha, but he has no power on account of his empty stomach. At the critical moment, Bulma wakes up and Yamcha, who can’t bear to be around women, runs away with a few sharp parting remarks.

Summary

Prologue

Some time after leaving Aru Village, Bulma, Son Goku, and Oolong travel southwest on a river in search of the final Dragon Balls. Oolong was forced to come with them after his misdeeds terrorizing the village. Bulma remarks that there are only two balls left and she is finding them faster than she expected. Goku questions why they brought Oolong with them, but Bulma says that his transformation power may prove useful. Oolong wants to leave, but Bulma casually remarks that as it is so hot, she might sleep in her underwear tonight. Oolong sits back and enjoys the trip, until Goku pats him in the crotch. Goku announces that he is a boy and Oolong tells him to never touch him that way again.

Part A

Goku asks how much longer they have to go, and Bulma admits that it will take around three more days to get to Mount Frypan. Oolong is terrified of the place because the Ox King lives there. Bulma is confident that Goku can take care of him, but Oolong is less sure. He explains that the Ox King is known as the "emperor of demons". Everyone who goes near Mount Frypan dies. Oolong, terrified, transforms into a fish and leaps out of the boat. Goku leaps out of the boat after him and swims down, but Oolong camouflages himself in the weeds until Goku has to return for air. Bulma has a better idea to catch him: fishing, using her panties as bait. Within moments, the perverted Oolong is captured and back in the boat.

Goku threatens to eat Oolong if he flees again. Bulma offers to give Oolong the panties if he proves himself useful, as well as gives him a piece of candy. Goku asks for one as well, but Bulma says that she has none for him. Suddenly, the boat stops; they have run out of gas. Bulma asks Oolong if he can turn into gas, but he says of course not. She says that she has some gas in a hoi poi capsule, but they need to go to shore to fill the tank. She asks Oolong to become an oar and he agrees. Goku rows the boat ashore.

A short time later, Goku ties up the boat as Bulma searches through her pockets for her capsule case. Oolong asks her if he can have the panties now, but she says that he will have to do even more before he will get a girl's panties. Bulma realizes that she lost her capsules somewhere in the river. They will have to proceed the rest of the way on foot. Goku reminds her that they still have Kintoun, although only he can ride it. Goku suggests that Oolong turn into a motorcycle, but the pig has fled. Goku searches on Kintoun, but he is gone. Bulma has an idea and shouts "pee! pee! pee!" into the wilderness. Suddenly, Oolong's stomach rumbles and he flees into a push to do some emergency business. Bulma calls out that the candy that she gave him causes diarrhea and that she can trigger it at any time.

Goku looks disgusted at Bulma and gets into a battle stance with Nyoi-bō. He calls Bulma a witch. Bulma reassures him that the candy will only last for a month. Goku backs down. He goes from angry to mischievous as he tries out the "pee! pee! pee!" call himself. Oolong jumps into the bushes while Goku holds his nose and laughs.

Oolong transforms into a (very old) motorcycle and Bulma gets on, but she is too heavy for him. Despite Oolong's changed form, he still has his own level of strength. Oolong taunts Bulma and offers to transform into a pair of panties since she took off hers at the river. Bulma, offended, strikes Oolong to the ground. Goku remarks that they will be walking after all.

Funimation's 1995 dub was contracted out to BLT Productions in Vancouver, who hired Canadian voice actors typically associated with Ocean Group. Funimation redubbed the series in the early 2000s with their in-house cast.

  • Unlike previous episodes, this is the first to not establish an exact count of days that the group has been traveling. Bulma specifies that Mount Frypan is in three more days (by river), but does not say how long they had traveled so far.

• This episode marks the first appearances of Yamcha and Pu'er.
• This episode depicts a flashback/story about the Ox King as told by Oolong. In that story, the Ox King appears in silhouette and is not depicted directly.
