"Burn Up!! A Red-Hot, Raging, Super-Fierce Fight" is the eighth theatrical film of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Z. The movie premiered as part of the 1993 Winter "Toei Anime Fair" on 6 March 1993, alongside a Dr. Slump film. It was written by series composer Takao Koyama and directed by Shigeyasu Yamauchi. Son Goku is also in pursuit of the Legendary Super Saiyan and teleports to the planet. One there, Broli goes berserk. Goku must defeat the Legendary Super Saiyan… to save the universe!!

Summary

Prologue

The South Galaxy is attacked by a Super Saiyan and the light from its stars quickly fades from view. On his planet, Kaiō is in a panic as he fears that his own North Galaxy may be destroyed soon as well.

Film

Goku and Chi-Chi stand in line for their appointment.
The Turtle Hermit drunkenly entertains his friends at a Hanami party.
A mysterious spaceship crashes the Hanami party.
Vegeta contemplates Paragus's offer to be king of New Planet Vegeta.
Trunks does not trust Paragus.

In a city strewn with errant cherry blossom petals, Son Goku and Chi-Chi stand in line wearing their best clothes. Their mission is to win a sought-after spring break seminar placement for Son Gohan at a famous cram school. Goku is impatient, but Chi-Chi says they could be waiting for at least two more hours, plus he has to do it just like they practiced. Chi-Chi drills Goku for his hobbies; he replies that he enjoys fighting. Chi-Chi scolds him, reminding him that he must respond "reading and sports". Some distance away, Goku's friends are relaxing at a Hanami party, celebrating the arrival of spring. The Turtle Hermit is drunk, but he demonstrate his prowess spinning plates while Dr. Brief, Bulma's Mother, Kuririn, Gohan, Oolong, Bulma, and baby Trunks look on. Even Bulma is impressed!

Back in line, Goku manages to remember his hobbies but screws up his three favorite words ("Friendship", "Effort", and "Victory"). At the park, Goku's friends listen to Kuririn singing karaoke.[notes 1] Some friends are impressed with his voice, but others seem less certain. Vegeta, who arrived with Future Trunks, silently vows revenge at the singing.[notes 2] Suddenly, a spaceship lands in the park and a squad of armored troops emerge and surround Vegeta. Their leader approaches and introduces himself as Paragus, another Saiyan. Paragus wishes for Vegeta to return with him to New Planet Vegeta and rule over them as king. With Vegeta as their leader, Paragus believes that the Saiyan race can once again become a glorious empire. Vegeta dismisses their offer and walks away until Paragus reveals his real reason for coming: Vegeta is the only one who can defeat the Legendary Super Saiyan. This Saiyan has destroyed much of the the South Galaxy and must be stopped before New Planet Vegeta is demolished as well. Despite Trunks's protests at his gullibility, Vegeta agrees to help Paragus. Somehow, Paragus knows all about "Prince" Trunks as well and invites him to join his father. Just before their ship departs, the still-drunk Turtle Hermit decides that he wants to come as well, dragging Gohan, Oolong, and Kuririn onto the boarding ramp as well. Trunks promises Bulma that he will bring his father home again before joining the departing ship as well.

At the cram school interview, Goku and Chi-Chi are presenting their case when Goku is contacted by Kaiō: something terrible has happened and the Earth is in danger! Distracted, Goku is unable to remember his hobbies. He explains that something has come up and teleports away, much to the shock of the interviewers. He shed his gi immediately after arriving at Kaiō's planet, revealing his orange gi underneath. After Goku recharges with a meal, Kaiō explains the situation and fears that this new power is even stronger than Goku and his friends. Goku is elated! Goku mentally searches for Saiyan ki before realizing that he doesn't know what direction south is. Kaiō points the way and he tries again, teleporting to a destroyed planet. Whatever destroyed it must have been very powerful to have left so much ki behind.

Meanwhile, Paragus's ship lands on New Planet Vegeta. He explains that he has been trying to rebuild the Saiyan civilization in the 30 years since Freeza destroyed their home planet. Inviting Vegeta to come to rule over them is a way for Paragus to repay his father. At the palace, a group of soldiers gathered from around the galaxy acclaim Vegeta as king. Paragus also introduces Vegeta to his son, Broli, and places him in Vegeta's service. Broli is scrawny and quite shy, though wearing a decorative headpiece. A soldier interrupts, announcing that the Super Saiyan has been seen on Planet Totokama. Vegeta declares that he will set off at once, with Broli in tow. Trunks demands that his father be cautious, but his warning is ignored. Vegeta and Broly take off in Paragus's ship, leaving the others behind on the planet.

Gohan, Trunks, and Kuririn are suspicious and leave to explore the planet. They find it destroyed and nearly deserted. Gohan questions why they would choose a planet like this for their new home. Trunks discovers that they are using slaves to harness planetary energy and direct it back to the castle. The descend to talk with one of the slaves and his grandfather. The slave explains that they were brought here after the "Super Saiyan" destroyed their planet.[notes 3] The Saiyans, they claim, are the devils of the universe. A guard appears and whips the boy, called Shamo,[notes 4] for slacking off. Gohan defends the boy, but the guard summons reinforcements. Kuririn joins in and the guards leave without explanation. Kuririn demonstrates his prowess by punching the air just as Goku teleports in and is smacked in the face. Goku is shocked to find his friends already on the planet; he was drawn there searching for the mysterious Saiyan ki. Kuririn fills him in on recent events until Paragus arrives. Paragus also somehow knows who Son Goku is, including his father and his birth name, "Kakkarot". Goku is suspicious at first, but Paragus offers him dinner and he agrees to come to the castle. After feasting, Kuririn, Trunks, and Gohan deliver leftovers to Shamo and his fellow slaves.

At the castle, Paragus cackles with glee at the Comet Gumori approaching the planet. A slave, Moa, worries about its approach but Paragus tells him that he will not need to experience the terror of the comet. Moa is grateful to be taken to Earth, but Paragus just laughs and kills him. Just then, Vegeta and Broli return empty-handed from Totokama; they could find no sign of the Legendary Super Saiyan. Vegeta notices that Goku has arrived and he tells him not to interfere. Vegeta wants to be the one to defeat this new threat. Broli pauses as he passes Goku, becoming quickly and inexplicably enraged. The gem in his headpiece begins to glow as Paragus looks on. The elder Saiyan uses a controller on his wrist which seems to calm his son, although not immediately. Later in the evening, Paragus sits alone in a room with a large computer. Wires connect his wrist device to it. A servant tells him that they have collected enough ki to once again control Broli's power with the device. Paragus reflects to himself that his son is less controllable in Goku's presence. Could Goku be unlocking his son's Saiyan instincts? Paragus flashes back to a time when he and Broli were conquering a planet. His son's rage burned uncontrollably and he ended up destroying the planet completely before turning on his father. Paragus had his scientists create a restraint to keep his son under control, barely managing to slip it on him in his sleep. With his son's power under his control, Paragus could rule the universe. He also reflects that Goku and Broli were born on the same day, even in cribs adjacent to each other. Even in the nursery, Broli had an amazing battle power. The infant Goku's cries upset Broli. Paragus fears that if he cannot control his son, the universe may be destroyed.

On cue, Broli screams "Kakarrot!" and escapes his cell. Goku is sound asleep but manages to wake and dodge at the last moment, allowing Broli to push him back and out of the castle. Paragus wakes and grabs his controller while Goku and Broli's fight spills out into the forest and a nearby lake. Goku draws first blood, but Broli laughs it off and begins to power up. Goku is impressed that Broli can control his power just like he and his friends can and also recognizes his ki as the one that destroyed the South Galaxy. Before Broli can power up completely, Paragus arrives and forces his son to submit. The pair return to the castle while Goku looks on, uncertain what just happened. High above, the comet draws even nearer.

The following day, Paragus begs Vegeta not to leave as he marches back to his ship. Goku is already there and tells Vegeta the news: Broli is the Legendary Super Saiyan they were looking for. Paragus denies it, but Trunks flies in to confirm that the planet is a sham. He brings slaves who reveal that Broli was the one that destroyed their planet. Paragus realizes that his ruse is over. He tells them that New Planet Vegeta is about to be destroyed by a comet and that his true goal had been to conquer Earth, one of the nicest planets in the universe, and claim it as their new homeworld all along. He did not want to risk marring his new capital in battle, so he tricked the strongest fighters to come here where they could be destroyed by the comet.

Seeing Goku, Broli again escapes from his father's control and advances on Goku. Vegeta attacks, but Broli hardly seems to notice him. Paragus is pleased: if Broly kills them all, they need not wait for the comet to arrive to do it for them. Even so, a light on his controller blinks and he appears concerned. Moments later, the controller breaks just as Broli transforms into a muscular Super Saiyan with green-tinged hair. He announces that Goku will be the first one to die as he and his friends quickly retreat. Vegeta powers down in shock, seemingly incapable to facing against Broli's immense power. Paragus tells Vegeta that he is right to be fearful, but his plans must end now as well since he can no longer control his son. Paragus plotted revenge against Vegeta for the actions of his father. King Vegeta saw Broli as a threat to his rule and attempted to kill both him and his father, but they were both barely alive when Freeza destroyed the planet hours later. Broli's potential kept the father and son pair from being killed even as the planet they were on disintegrated around them.

Goku, Trunks, and Gohan battle against Broli, but they pummeled by his superior strength. The "Legendary" Saiyan tells them that he will destroy the planet if they do not fight at full power. Vegeta hangs back, terrified of Broli's power and unable to bring himself to join the fight. Goku is impressed by Broli's strength and says that it is time to begin "round two". As if on cue, the Turtle Hermit arrives with Oolong, Kuririn, and the slaves. Unexpectedly, he powers up to his Max Power form and challenges Broli. The group watches incredulously as the old man prepares a Max Power Kamehameha... only to switch into a comedy routine at the last moment. The Turtle Hermit is drunk once again. Broli observes the slaves from Planet Shamo and tells them that they will never see their home again. He launches a ki blast at them but turns it away at the last moment to sail into a nearby planet, their home. It is destroyed instantly.

Kuririn and the others flee as the battle resumes. Broli focuses first on Gohan, knocking him through a building. The boy hangs unconsciously by his gi, caught on the side of a destroyed building. Trunks is taken out next, before Broli turns to Goku. He is able to dodge most of Broli's ki blasts, but a point-plank shot launches Goku into a building as well. All three Saiyans revert to their base forms, unconscious. The fighting unlocks even more of Broli's ki and he flies off with waves of energy radiating from his body. One blast destroys Paragus's ship, leaving Kuririn and the remainder of Goku's friends without a way home. Other blasts rain around the planet like meteors. Broli turns back to his unconscious victims and launches a ki blast at Gokan, but it is deflected at the last moment. Piccolo has arrived! He rescues Gohan and heals him with a senzu, then repeats the process for the others. Piccolo reveals that he was able to listen in to the conversation between Goku and Kaiō, but that he did not have a way to come there any faster.

Paragus reveals that the comet will strike the planet soon, while the non-combatants flee in Piccolo's spaceship. Goku and Piccolo fight against Broly but do no damage. Once they are beaten back, Trunks and Gohan try a paired masenko, but it only succeeds in blowing away the narrow perch that Broli is standing on. The fighters assail Broli, but even together their attacks have no effect. Piccolo is knocked back to the castle by a ki blast and lands at Vegeta's feet. Vegeta is still locked in fear, but Piccolo grabs him by the hair to drag him to the battlefield. Vegeta complains that battle is pointless, but Piccolo shames him and tells him to never show his face again if he doesn't fight back. He drops him into the ruined city below. The fight continues, but Broli is still unfazed. Goku tries a point-blank kamehameha, but Broli shrugs it off and counters with a punch of his own which knocks Goku out again. Off in the distance, Vegeta rages at himself that a "low-class" Saiyan like Goku could even fight someone like Broli. Regaining his fighting spirit, he powers up and tears off after Broly. He lands some solid blows on his foe, and encourages Trunks to fight with him, but it is over quickly. Broli batters Vegeta into a wall until he too is unconscious.

Back at the castle, Paragus flees to his pod to escape the planet, but Broli meets him there. Observing that his father was escaping in a single-seat pod, he deduces the truth about his father's feelings. He crushes the pod with his father inside and throws it toward the comet. Paragus is dead. Goku, badly injured, advances slowly once again towards Broli. Piccolo encourages each of the injured fighters to give what remains of their ki to Goku. Powering up, Goku takes another run at Broli, but is deflected by his barrier. Goku asks for even more energy, but Broli just stomps him repeatedly into the ground. Piccolo, Trunks, and Gokan all provide their energy to Goku, but Vegeta refuses. Even injured, he has his pride. Just as Broli is about to kill Goku, Vegeta relents and grants Goku his ki. Recharged, Goku deflects Broli's attack and finally land one of his own. As Broli flashes back to his him and Goku in infancy, a strange power builds in his chest where Goku hit him. It builds until it explodes, taking the Legendary Super Saiyan with it. Broli is defeated! The victory is short-lived as just then the comet destroys the whole of New Planet Vegeta.

In an empty star field, a Capsule Corp spaceship suddenly appears! It is so cramped that it is bulging in all directions; Goku had somehow teleported all of his friends and the slaves off of the planet before it exploded. The ship is impossibly cramped, but at least they are alive!

Some time later, Goku and Gohan teleport home. They are dressed in new, undamaged gis. Chi-Chi appears and immediately yells that spring break is already over. Goku, proud of himself for remembering, tells her that his hobbies are reading and sports. The end.

Items

Setting

Based on the cherry blossoms in the trees, this film likely takes place in May or April of Age 767. Daizenshuu 6 places the film between May 17 and May 26, during the lead-up to the Cell Games, but Cell and the Cell Games are not mentioned in the film itself.[6] The dialog in the film implies that it begins at the beginning of spring break and ends when break is nearly over; that suggests a span of approximately one week.

  • Age 767, Spring
    • Kaiō's Planet
    • An unknown city where Chi-Chi interviews for the "Most Famous School", Goku's friends attend a cherry blossom party, and where Paragus first lands on Earth
    • A planet in the South Galaxy destroyed by Broli. Goku visits using teleportation.
    • New Planet Vegeta
      • Paragus's palace
      • A destroyed city, energy farm, and other locations around the world including a lake, forest, and mountains.
    • Goku's home on Mount Paozu
  • Unknown date (between Age 737 and 767) - in flashback
    • A planet conquered and destroyed by Paragus and Broli
    • A planet where Paragus first placed the control device on Broli
  • Planet Vegeta, Age 737 - in flashback
    • King Vegeta's Castle
    • A nursery with both Son Goku and Broli as infants
    • A garbage dump where the not-quite-dead bodies of Paragus and Broli are dumped

Son Gohan's school application, sourced from the French 4:3 open matte DVD. Some of the text is cut off in the 16:9 versions.
This banner displaying the motto of Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump—"Friendship, Effort, Victory!!"—does not appear in the 16:9 theatrical presentation of the film.
Muten Rōshi uses a Hyottoko mask to shift between alterations of his facial features, settling here on the face of Arale Norimaki.

Son Gohan
Born XXXX Year, Xth of X
X years old
Address: 58N018 East, Point 439
Applying to: Most Famous School
Remarks: Gohan is smart, handsome, plus strong and he works out too. There's no other kid as good as him. He'll definitely become a great scholar.

  • The banner above Goku's and Chi-Chi's heads at their appointment at the "Most Famous School" reads: 友情 努力 勝利!! (Friendship - Effort - Victory!!) Before the appointment, Chi-Chi instructs Goku to tell the school officials that these are his three favorite words. The banner is only visible in 4:3 versions of the movie. Dragon Ball movies are all intended to be presented in the 16:9 aspect ratio, as was the theatrical standard of the time. These words are the motto of Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump.[8]

What was the environment like in the Jump editorial department back then?
It was quite oppressive. It felt like an all-boys school. Different ways of doing things were unacceptable. Young staffers were not allowed to object to anything, junior members would be forced to go out drinking, and there was a strict hierarchy, much like it were a sports team. Jump is based around the three principles of friendship, effort, and victory, but within the editorial department the ideology seemed quite different (laughs). The line of thought of "that's just how men behave" didn't sit well with me, even back then. That sort of environment just didn't suit me.
Kazuhiko Torishima
(Akira Toriyama's editor)

  • Signs around town read "That Famous Seminar" (かの有名なセミナール/Kano yūmeina semināru) and "Spring Break special short course interview venue" (春休み特別講習面接会場/Haruyasumi tokubetsu kōshū mensetsu kaijō). The walls underneath the 「友情 努力 勝利!!」banner feature various aspirational messages like "Shining future!!" (輝く未来!!/Kagayaku mirai!!), "Aim for the elite!" (めざせエリート!/Mezase eriito!), etc.
  • The Turtle Hermit's compliment that Kuririn's singing is "the best in Japan" is an anachronism. Japan is not a country in the Dragon World.[notes 5]
  • Paragus explains that Freeza destroyed Planet Vegeta "30 years ago" in Age 737. This is consistent with other dates given in the series.
  • The Turtle Hermit uses a traditional Hyottoko mask on New Planet Vegeta to shift between alterations of his facial features. His fan depicts the flag of Japan. The Hyottoko mask's puckered mouth is supposed to depict a man breathing fire through a bamboo pipe, hence the term hyottoko (ひょっとこ), from "fire" (火/hi) and "man" (男/otoko).
  • Piccolo is able to listen in on the telepathic conversations between Goku and Kaio. This ability is not explained, although could be a side effect if he merged with God in this timeline.
  • Piccolo's journey from Earth to New Planet Vegeta in a Capsule Corp space ship is not fully explained. He was able to travel all the way to the South Galaxy in one day, while previous ships are not depicted as being able to travel so quickly.
  • Future Trunks uses Gohan's masenko in this film, a reminder that he trained with Future Gohan and likely learned his techniques, rather than those of his father.

Notes

  1. Kuririn is singing Tsubasa o Kudasai (翼をください, Please Give Me Wings), a popular Japanese folk song.
  2. From context, it is unclear whether Vegeta was upset because he liked or disliked Kuririn's musical style. Vegeta would later try his hand at karaoke during Battle of Gods.
  3. Although Shamo's grandfather claims that their planet was destroyed, it will not be literally destroyed until later in the movie when Broli launches a ki blast at it. The slaves also fail to mention that their planet is immediately next to New Planet Vegeta, being visible and large in the sky even during the day.
  4. Both the one named slave and their planet is named "Shamo"; no explanation is offered for this coincidence.
  5. It is conceivable that "Japan" is the name of the city or region, but it is more likely this was an error by the scripting team.
