"Goku's Rival? Arrival!!" is the fourteenth episode of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball. The episode first aired in Japan on Fuji TV on 28 May 1986, receiving a ratings share of 22.2%. The episode was written by Keiji Terui and directed by Kazuhisa Takenōchi.

Synopsis

Done with collecting the Dragon Balls, Goku heads to Kame-Sen'nin's place to receive training! However, in order to become Kame-Sen'nin's pupil, the fee is to bring a pichi-pichi gal!! At the same time, a person comes from across the sea. The boy, who calls himself Kuririn, came in order to become Kame-Sen'nin's pupil, just like Goku! In order to be received as a pupil, Kuririn presents a large stash of porn magazines that he brought. Will he manage to safely become a pupil...?!

Summary

Prologue

Having left Bulma and the others behind, Goku takes Kinto'un to go train with the Turtle Hermit at Kame House. On the way, he passes over the area where he lives, realizing that he has never seen it from the sky before. He decides to stop at his house to get a futon and some other things. As he puts his things on Kinto'un, he realizes he is hungry, but he decides to ask the old man for some food.

Part A

Yamcha's aircraft takes a dive into a forest, clipping both wings on trees before crashing into another tree. Yamcha and Oolong hang from one tree, and Pu'er from another. Bulma hangs from a rope over the burning wreckage. Oolong thinks they were lucky to have bailed out so quickly, and Yamcha agrees. Bulma begs for help as the flames lick her heels, but Oolong points out she can just jump down, so she looks down and realizes he is right. She jumps down and hurts her injured leg, so Yamcha goes to help her up. Bulma is upset that their plane was destroyed, and Yamcha explains they had exceeded the weight capacity. Pu'er asks what they should do now, and Yamcha says there is nothing they can do; they do not have any more Hoi-Poi capsules.

Kuririn is introduced early in the anime.

Suddenly, the jungle around them seems very scary; Oolong encourages them to get out of there, and Bulma agrees. A giant pteranodon flies overhead, and everyone screams. Just then, a human voice screams nearby, and Yamcha hears it. Bulma tells Yamcha that does not matter and grabs him, dragging him out of the jungle. Oolong and Pu'er run after them. The human voice belongs to a strange young boy who is running through the jungle and felling trees as training.

Goku speeds through the jungle on Kinto'un, over rivers and through mountains until he finally reaches the ocean. He spots Kame House and lands, calling out to the old man to let him know he has arrived. There is no answer at the door, so he sets down his things and looks around. He looks in the window and sees the Turtle Hermit watching an aerobics video, so he climbs in and yells to get his attention. The old man still ignores him, so Goku approaches his side, takes a deep breath, and yells in the old man's ear as loudly as he can. This rattles him, and Goku laughs. Muten Rōshi recognizes him, and Goku informs him that he has come to train. The old man tells him to wait a bit, turning his attention back to the aerobics video, but Goku complains that he is hungry, so the old man points him toward the kitchen, telling him he can help himself to whatever is in the refrigerator.

Goku finds the refrigerator and he is surprised to find that it is cold inside. While his new master drools over the aerobics video, Goku destroys everything inside the refrigerator. When the aerobics video is finished, the Turtle Hermit stands up and walks into the kitchen, finding Goku overstuffed from having eaten everything including the butter. He scolds Goku for eating a week's worth of groceries and asks him why he is there. Goku tells him he is done hunting for the Dragon Balls and now he is ready to train, like they agreed. He brought his own futon and everything.

The Turtle Hermit looks around, and then asks Goku whether he brought that "puff-puff" girl with him, but Goku says she went back to her house in the city. The old man is disappointed to hear this. Meanwhile, Bulma treks through the desert with Yamcha and the others. Oolong asks if they are there yet, and Bulma thinks that they should be by now. Oolong asks what direction the city is supposed to be in, and Bulma tells him it should be directly north. Yamcha looks at the sun and realizes something is wrong. He tells Pu'er to transform into a compass. He checks it, and realizes they are walking south. Oolong cannot believe they are going in the wrong direction, and Bulma wonders where they got off. Everyone deflates. Yamcha is thirsty; Oolong is hungry; Bulma's leg hurts. Yamcha replaces the dressing on her leg, worried that it might get infected, and Bulma thanks him. Yamcha blushes, and Oolong is disgusted with them again. Then he notices what looks like a sandstorm in the distance, but it is only the strange boy who was in the jungle earlier. Now he is running through the desert, vowing to get stronger.

Back at Kame House, the Turtle Hermit tells Goku that his training is very strict, but Goku does not mind; he wants to surpass even him. The old man thinks this is funny, and Goku laughs with him, but then he tells Goku that his training is not free. He needs to bring a pichi-pichi gal before he gets training. Goku asks what a bitchy bitchy gag is, so the old man corrects him, telling him a pichi-pichi gal is a cute, lively young woman. Goku is confused, but he will do whatever it takes to get the training he came for, so he agrees. He hops on Kinto'un, and the old man stops him to make sure he knows what a pichi-pichi gal is, and Goku thinks it is a "guy with no winkie and lots of spunk". The old man says that is almost right, but they have to have more than lots of energy. Not too young; not too old. Has to be cute, and voluptuous (むっちり mutchiri) is even better. Goku is confused, and asks him to explain this mutchiri thing again. The Turtle Hermit realizes he is going to have to teach Goku common knowledge. Goku says it does not matter; he will bring one of those back. The old man asks what happened to his tail; Goku tells him he does not know; it went off somewhere. Then he takes off, leaving the Turtle Hermit to muse on how strange he is.

Part B

Goku brings the Turtle Hermit a giant woman.

While the Turtle Hermit is waiting for Goku to return with a girl, he sings to himself, changes into a suit, puts some champagne on ice, and turns on "Do the Boogaloo" on his cassette player. He dances around and then opens another closet to choose a turtle shell. After choosing a pink one, he sits and fidgets nervously on top of his couch, unable to contain his excitement. When Goku returns, he rushes out the door, inviting his guest to come inside. Then he gets a good look at her: it is a giant body-building woman! Goku tells the old man that she has lots of energy. The woman asks what she can do for them. On the mainland shore, the strange boy from earlier pushes a boat into the water, hopping in and rowing out to sea.

The Turtle Hermit gives Goku a lesson on feminine beauty.

At Kame House, the Turtle Hermit attempts to instruct Goku on the nuances of feminine beauty. He holds up two pictures, one of a conventionally attractive woman, the other of a conventionally unattractive woman, and tells Goku to choose the attractive one. Goku looks back and forth between the two pictures, unable to decide. The Turtle Hermit tells him this should be easy, and he puts the unattractive woman away, urging Goku to take a closer look at the attractive one; this is the kind of girl he wants. Goku does not understand, but he thinks he can find a woman like that. He departs again, and the old man worries what he will bring back this time. As Goku flies over the ocean on Kinto'un, the strange boy eats onigiri in his boat.

When Goku returns, the Turtle Hermit hides behind a corner of the house just in case Goku brings him a weird one. He peeks around the corner and sees a beautiful woman sitting on Kinto'un. Thinking he has hit the jackpot, he gestures for Goku to come around the corner and congratulates him on a job well done. Goku asks if they can start training now, and his new master tells him his first task is to bring him that girl's panties (パンチー pantii). Goku does not know what panchi means (ぱんち), but the old man tells him that she will know, so Goku runs to ask her, while the Turtle Hermit's heart pounds in anticipation. Goku returns empty-handed, and the old man freaks out. Goku asks him if he knows what a "shirt" is (シャツ shatsu), because the girl said she is only wearing a shirt; she is not wearing any panchi. The mental image alone gives the Turtle Hermit a nosebleed. Goku asks what he should do, and the old man says there is nothing for it; he will have to teach by example. He plans to talk to her like nothing is wrong, and use the cover of his sunglasses to catch a peek. He runs up to the girl and starts up a conversation about the weather, but when he tries to sneak a peek, he sees that she is a Mermaid! He knew that it was too good to be true, but then he takes a closer look at her chest, and decides to ask her if he can pinch her boobs (pai-pai) instead. She punches him and dives back into the water. Goku deduces that the old man must have meant "punch" (パンチ panchi) when he was talking about "panties", and the old man pretends to agree; they must learn to take punches to stand up in a fight. Goku finds this reasonable.

The Turtle Hermit tells Goku to bring him another pichi-pichi gal, one that does not have the bottom half of a mermaid. Goku does not think this is reasonable, but his master reminds him that his training is strict, so Goku agrees. The Turtle Hermit thinks to himself that he has to take this opportunity while the pesky Umigame is away. Just then, Goku notices something coming. The Turtle Hermit panics, thinking it is Umigame, but Goku points out it is a boat, with a strange boy riding in it. The boy stops some distance from shore and does a flying leap, flipping over a few times before landing head-first in the sand.
